What Happens When the Microbes That Keep Us Healthy Disappear?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  Today 7:07 AM    2
"When antibiotics were first introduced, they were miraculous drugs—and they still are," Blaser says. "But it really wasn't fully considered that antibiotics select for resistance." And an antibiotic will not only impact the infection it is targeted for. "It will select for resistance across the microbiome," he added. Blaser doesn't call for abandoning a whole class of effective drugs, but he does advocate for a better understanding of the potential trade-offs—even if we might not yet have all the answers. "I don't think anyone was putting that trade-off on the plate," says Blaser, who notes that both doctors and patients should reserve antibiotic use to cases where they are necessary.

Cap-and-Trade Will Cause Dems Greater Slaughter in 2010 Midterms
merrie
by merrie  12-27-2009
Just what the country needs, a tax that will restrict the economy during an economic down turn. However, Obama seems to be on a liberal suicide mission as he knows that the Democrats are going to get creamed in the 2010 midterms, so why not inflict as much liberal/socialist damage on the US while Donkeys have an overwhelming majority. Because after 2010, Barack Hussein Obama may just be without the House and the Senate. The Truth About CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) vs. "Climate" Hysteria
blueridge
by blueridge  12-14-2009
CO2 is NOT a pollutant--it's natural and essential for life! Maybe those who cry loudest against CO2 should save or hold their breath, literally, since they are expelling so much CO2 in their political propaganda, while attempting to overthrow civilization. Any government, whether national or global, that attempts to regulate the necessities of life (including your own breathing!), is erecting the largest tyranny of all.

China’s Asset Bubble
kmcolo
by kmcolo  12-21-2009
It is a matter of time. What will it mean to the Chinese Government? Will it buckle under the weight of massive dissatisfaction? Or will it mean some dark years for the Chinese people? What will it mean to the US Dollar? Will China unload the dollar thus massively devaluing the currency in order to keep their economy afloat? But would they if they are so dependent on foreign trade? And what will it mean to the world economy. Will the world economy be firm enough to absorb Chinese economic contraction? So far, China's economy has been one of the few bright spots. If the world economy is not strong enough China's asset bubble burst may lead to another global recession.

When Liberal Dreams Collide With Public Opinion
merrie
by merrie  12-22-2009    1
"What's really exceptional at this stage of Obama's presidency," writes Andrew Kohut, the Pew Research Center's respected pollster, "is the extent to which the public has moved in a conservative direction on a range of issues. These trends have emanated as much from the middle of the electorate as from the highly energized conservative right. From which we can draw two conclusions. One is that economic distress does not move Americans to support more government. Rasmussen reports that 66 percent of Americans favor smaller government with fewer services and only 22 percent favor more services and higher taxes. The second is that Barack Obama's persuasive powers are surprisingly weak. His advocacy seems to have moved Americans in the opposite of the intended direction. Obama first came to national attention in 2004 by promising to heal partisan, ideological and racial divisions. Like the other two Democratic presidents elected in the last 40 years .....

The role of land use in global warming
amgumen
by amgumen  12-18-2009
Forested areas provide the combined benefits of directly cooling the atmosphere and of absorbing greenhouse gases, leading to additional cooling. Green architecture in cities, including green roofs and more highly reflective construction materials, would further contribute to a slowing of warming rates. Stone envisions local and state governments taking the lead in addressing the land use drivers of climate change, while the federal government takes the lead in implementing carbon reduction initiatives, like cap and trade programs.

The EPA's Carbon Bomb Fizzles
merrie
by merrie  12-12-2009    2
President Obama, having failed to get climate legislation, didn't want to show up to the Copenhagen climate talks with a big, fat nothing. So the EPA pulled the pin. In doing so, it exploded its own threat. With a recession on, the subject has become poisonous in congressional districts. Blue Dogs and swing-state senators watched in alarm as local Democrats in the recent Virginia and New Jersey elections were pounded on the issue, and lost their seats. But now? Hurrah! It's the administration's problem! No one can say Washington isn't doing something; the EPA has it under control. The agency's move gives Congress a further excuse not to act. "The Obama administration now owns this political hot potato," says one industry source. "If I'm Ben Nelson or Kent Conrad, why would I ever want to take it back?" All the more so, in Congress's view, because the EPA "command and control" threat may yet prove hollow.

EPA Formally Declares CO2 a Dangerous Pollutant
merrie
by merrie  12-8-2009    1
major findings and conclusions from recent assessments of the U.S. Climate Change Science Program and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change .” The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis study of the economic effects of carbon dioxide regulations found cumulative gross domestic product (GDP) losses of $7 trillion by 2029 single-year GDP losses exceeding $600 billion in some years, energy cost increases of 30 percent or more, and annual job losses exceeding 800,000 for several years. Hit particularly hard is manufacturing, which will see job losses in some industries that exceed 50 percent. And George Will writes that any emissions reduction target, whether they come from the EPA, cap and trade, or a Copenhagen treaty are simply unattainable: “Barack Obama, understanding the histrionics required in climate-change debates, promises that U.S. emissions in 2050 will be 83 percent below 2005 levels.

The Question of Obama’s Loyalty
merrie
by merrie  12-7-2009    2
Thus there is no need to further kill jobs, weaken the US Economy, dramatically increase the cost of living, and tax America into oblivion. Obama’s plan is to tax the United States taxpayer and redistribute the wealth or money to Third World Leftist Dictators around the world. The United Nations, who will have their capabilities at corruption compromised by the ongoing exposure of the climate warming hoax offered this shallow attempt to revive the myth. Rajendra K. Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Control, offered up this insipid explanation as to the validity of his panel’s existence. http://bit.ly/4DAtbG Despite efforts to diminish the obvious fact that a science built on fraud is not science, it is a scam and nothing more, politicians like Senator Barbara Boxer, are instead on the attack (http://bit.ly/7S4A0P) stating that hacking is illegal and the US will prosecute the hackers for a crime that was committed in England .....
