POPSFor Veterans Day — Real Troop Support "According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, nearly 42 million American men and women have served during wartime. Nearly 1.2 million died while serving. Nearly 1.5 million were wounded. Since 9/11, more than 5,200 have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Nearly 36,000 have been wounded — many have debilitating injuries that have changed their lives forever. We may debate the rightness or wrongness of various engagements, but we know that freedom comes at a steep price — and we honor those who have secured it for us."

POPS"I've seen the future and it's made of mushrooms" more: The inventors have started a company called Ecovative Design to market the technology, and I think they’re really onto something. Just imagine if they’re able to form this product into low-cost, biodegradable auto body panels and other automotive components. Or counter tops. Or flooring. They could even conceivably figure out a way to make children’s toys out of the material. For my sake, I hope they stop short of making dishes and kitchen utensils out of them, though. I don’t eat ANYTHING that touches mushrooms. Blech.

POPSRemnants of Childhood - do you have any? "...there's a brand-spankin' new Walmart that opened near me with mint-condition shopping carts and a fresh, smooth parking lot with a ever-so-slight down hill slope to the cars from the store. A few jogging steps is all I need to roll myself and my groceries from the front doors all the way to the far end of the lot."

POPSWhy "but it will confuse the children" is an obnoxious excuse for discrimination As the post points out, ou know what else confuses kids? Everything: Time zones. Books without pictures. Cargo pants. Certain hair colors. Jello molds. The magic trick with the quarter behind the ear. Mirrors. Mentadent toothpaste dispensers. Everything confuses kids, because they're kids. So "Will it confuse kids?" is probably not the best litmus test for, well, anything besides toys and Spongebob plotlines (and even then, there's a lot of leeway).

POPSOlympic Flashback: '02 Salt Lake Games Tainted By Scandal, Bribery and Glenn Beck's Church
Almost as soon as Romney took the job, however, the Mormon Church's role in the Games became a source of contention - a dispute exacerbated by Romney's request for an additional $8 million in loaned property and cash from the church, among other contributions. Utah's wealthiest businessman, Jon Huntsman Sr., the father of Utah's current governor, assailed Romney for exploiting his ties to the church. Huntsman himself is prominent in the Mormon Church, which is officially known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. ''We've got a chairman who is active LDS, now we've got a present CEO who is active LDS,'' Huntsman was quoted in the Salt Lake Tribune as saying of Garff and Romney. ''They claim they're going out really scour the world to find the best person, and Mitt brings in one of his cronies to be the COO. Another broken promise. Because we've got three LDS folks who are all cronies. Cronyism at its peak. ..... These are not the Mormon Games.'

POPSWhere the Worst Germs Lurk I don't know how I survived to this ripe old age. I'm all for much hand washing, but I think we do our children no real favors by not allowing their immune systems to grow a little. Having said that, I know we live in a more crowded environment and people seem to have suspended common sense about proper hygiene. I always use those sanitizers for the grocery carts.

POPSLove and compatibility Ask any person what are the things that he or she looks for in a person they would like to spend the rest of their lives with and you will probably be given a list of physical, emotional and intellectual traits that particular person looks for in an ideal mate.

POPSMickey Rooney is Still Alive! Let's somebody celebrate a fella while he's STILL ALIVE! Lauren Bacall. There are others now in obscurity. Oh, but we've moved on haven't we, to our new age of wonderful toys and "rational" thought and sterile culture that's more filthy than ever. Great!
