POPSElectronic Waste - A Call For Change It goes deeper into the way electronic gadgets are manufactured. People have noticed this for a long while but no one had/has done anything to change the real cause of this problem. No one questions why a perfectly good TV, stereo, printer etc has to get thrown away because a very minor part no longer functions and manufacturers make it more expensive to buy the replacement part that would fix it. So, it works out cheaper for people to throw it out and buy a new one. Everyone knows this, but why is this allowed to continue. Printers are soooo cheap, but the ink to refill is expensive. It is cheaper to use the printer once, throw it out and buy a new one compared to replacing the ink. The list goes on... Doesn't this have to change??? Isn't this the real culprit???

The act is named after a New York City Police Department detective who died from his post-9/11 ailments. “Unfortunately, it’s just going to happen more and more…I hope next week there isn’t four,” regretted Stephen Grossman. To better illustrate the pattern, the newspaper noted that firefighter John McNamara, also 44, had died of cancer last month. “These three deaths are proof that we need this bill passed today $#0151; not a year from now,” said John Feal, founder of the FealGood Foundation. “How do you get this high cluster of serious cancer in just people that worked the pile?” he said. “That isn’t a coincidence.”

Jeff Byron, a former Marine air traffic controller, moved with his family into base housing in 1982, three months after his first daughter Andrea was born and two years before his daughter Rachel was born. Rachel is developmentally disabled, has spina bifida and was born with a cleft palate, he said. Andrea has a rare bone marrow syndrome known as aplastic anemia, according to Byron's testimony. Dr. Michael Gros, a Navy obstetrician at Camp Lejeune in the early 1980s, was diagnosed with lymphoma after living in Camp Lejeune housing, he said. Gros said he has had to give up his medical practice and his treatment has cost more than $4.5 million.
