Certified Pet Therapy: Dogs visiting the sick and injured at hospitals +PICS

She said of Richelle: "That was the happiest I've seen her." I've seen one dog at a hospital near my home, visiting the cancer center, which got me hunting for articles. The elderly patients love the visits just as much as the kids. It's a remarkable thing what these pets do for the patients. Such a great idea, cost very little -. a win situation any way you look at it.

"Although details have not been made available, recent statements by Special Envoy on Climate Change Todd Stern indicate that negotiators may be intending to commit the United States to a nationwide emission reduction program," Webb added. "As you well know from your time in the Senate, only specific legislation agreed upon in the Congress, or a treaty ratified by the Senate, could actually create such a commitment on behalf of our country."

Referring to the British e-mails, he said, "We finally have proof of what we have always suspected - that these guys have been fudging the data. My hope also is that there will be an independent science panel who will go over their data and methods and come up with a report that will set the matter straight." Whatever one's views on the science of climate change, the so-called Climategate scandal could not have come at a worse time for those who hope to see the world's major industrial countries take strong action at the Copenhagen climate summit, which opens Monday with more than 10,000 participants. Contained among thousands of e-mails released last month from the University of East Anglia's Climate Research Unit are a number of remarks that suggest the scientists there distorted some data to conform to their expectations. The center's chief has stepped down pending an investigation of the e-mails. Prominent climate scientists insist that the e-mails do not change what they

Madness in Manhattan: A Criminal Trial Will Give the Terrorists What They Want

I am unable to see Eric Holder's decision to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in New York City as anything other than a lose-lose situation for the administration Many independents like myself are undoubtedly furious over this, and I am sure I speak for many of them when I say that even a speedy conviction, as promised by Mr. Holder, would not soothe my discomfort over his decision. Yet if such a speedy conviction does occur, it will undoubtedly infuriate Barack Obama's liberal base, who will denounce the trial as a farce and a travesty of "justice," whatever the left's fluid definition of that may be. http://bit.ly/8WXms8 (Part 1) ... 4min ... http://bit.ly/8Fa2aY (Part 2) ... 4min ... http://bit.ly/7IKtvD Eric Holder's Baffling KSM Decision By DAVID BEAMER Mr. Beamer is the father of Todd Beamer, who died on United Airlines Flight 93 on 9/11. http://bit.ly/8pDddV

Ladies of Arlington Never Miss Final Salute

I HOPE YOU CAN TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS. This story pulled at my heart strings. What a wonderful organization with such great and meaningful values to devote their time and to show respect to our fallen solders. The Arlington Ladies stand a silent vigil at funerals attended by dozens of mourners and at funerals where a Soldier has no next of kin - no friends present to render a final salute. In fact, that is the very reason they attend funerals. Since 1973, the Arlington Ladies have ensured that no Soldier - old or young - is ever buried alone.

Nidal Hasan Bought A Para-Military Automatic Pistol With Armor-Piercing Capabilities

The FBI dispatched agents from Austin, San Antonio and Waco to the scene, and pressed into service a 15-member forensic unit to help military police collect evidence. Agents from the bureau's Washington field office interviewed relatives, neighbors and friends who knew Hasan during his years in the Washington area. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also are on hand to help with weapons analysis. Investigators also focused on Guns Galore, a firearms store just down the highway from the mosque. Store owner David Cheadle said federal agents interviewed him about the sale of a FN Herstal Five-Seven pistol that was used in the shootings. "It is a popular choice for personal defense," Cheadle said, pulling one from his case, "but it's expensive" -- more than $1,100 at his store. The officials said a continuing search of Major Hasan’s computer indicates that he had logged on to Web sites that celebrated radical Islamic ideologies and that he had....

And she did it in spectacular fashion in her first career start against males, taking her typical position at the back of the field under Racing Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith and charging down the stretch with authority"her stride lengthening and becoming more powerful with every kick"to inhale the leaders and hit the finish line first, just as she did in each one of the previous 13 starts of her brilliant career. “There are tears coming to my eyes,” said trainer John Shirreffs, who won the Breeders’ Cup Ladies' Classic (G1) last year with Zenyatta and this year’s Ladies' Classic on Friday with Life Is Sweet, becoming the first trainer to achieve the rare double in the same season. “I can’t believe it. “She is a great, great filly. She is all heart. The way the crowd took to her was just amazing. They cheered for her; they clapped for her; they love her.

US House: UN report on Gaza 'war crimes' is biased
infidel70
by infidel70  11-4-2009
The Goldstone report lambasted both sides in the war, which killed up to 1,387 Palestinians and 13 Israelis, but was harsher toward Israel. It gave Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants six months to mount credible investigations or face possible prosecution in the Hague. Both Israel and Hamas have denied committing any war crimes. Israel has criticized the report as unbalanced and says the 47-nation Geneva-based U.N. Human Rights Council, which commissioned the report, is biased against the Jewish state. Report: Dozens in Congress Under Ethics Scrutiny
merrie
by merrie  10-30-2009    1
The inquiry involves lawmakers who steered appropriations to clients of a now-defunct lobbying firm and received campaign contributions from the firm and its clients. The names included three lawmakers previously identified in the inquiry: the chairman of the defense subcommittee, Murtha; and Reps. Peter Visclosky, D-Ind., and James Moran, D-Va. The Post said others whose names were in the report included Reps. Norm Dicks, D-Wash., Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, C.W. Bill Young, R-Fla., and Todd Tiahrt, R-Kan. The committee, however, has not announced an investigation of any of these lawmakers. A committee statement said its security was breached through "peer to peer file sharing software" by a junior employee who was working from home. The staff member was fired. The committee said it is investigating whether Rep. Maxine Waters used her influence to help a bank in which her husband owned stock, and whether the couple benefited as a result.

Texan Justice
Socratoad
by Socratoad  10-12-2009
Some of this is now coming back to haunt Rick Perry. He executed 199 people, more than any governor in American history. He gave consistent short shrift to clemency appeals. Many of those appealing were likely guilty, but it is now clear that one was innocent and that this fact was flagged for Perry before he ordered him put to death. Cameron Todd Willingham was executed by lethal injection in 2004 on charges that he killed his minor children. The charges arose from a fire that occurred in his home on December 23, 1991. Investigators concluded that the fire resulted from arson. However, subsequent scientific reviews have all found that the arson investigation was grossly flawed and that its conclusions reflected base prejudices rather than science. The prosecutor, John Jackson, acknowledges that the arson investigation was flawed, but he remains convinced that Willingham is guilty for two reasons. The first is that he beat his wife and was therefore capable of killing his children. The

Kano says hearing her breathe was one of the best sounds he's ever heard. He says he's no hero and feels blessed to have been in the right place at the right time to help. Kano credits basic life saving skills he learned in Boy Scouts and in a more advanced class he took in high school. FOX 13's Scott McKane has more about the incident.

Russian Professor Predicts End of U.S.
billpar
by billpar  9-23-2009    4
Interest in his forecast revived this fall when he published an article in Izvestia, one of Russia's biggest national dailies. In it, he reiterated his theory, called U.S. foreign debt "a pyramid scheme," and predicted China and Russia would usurp Washington's role as a global financial regulator. Americans hope President-elect Barack Obama "can work miracles," he wrote. "But when spring comes, it will be clear that there are no miracles." People like him have forecast similar cataclysms before, he says, and been right. He cites French political scientist Emmanuel Todd. Mr. Todd is famous for having rightly forecast the demise of the Soviet Union -- 15 years beforehand. "When he forecast the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1976, people laughed at him," says Prof. Panarin.

David Grann, "Trial by Fire: Did Texas Execute an Innocent Man?" (on Todd Willingham's execution, Feb. 2005), The New Yorker (Sept. 7, 2009)

A damning piece by The New Yorker on the story of Todd Willingham. Willingham was executed in 2005 for triple homicide after being convicted of killing his three children by setting their room on fire. Texas officials ignored reports by fire scientists, whose investigations showed that there had been no solid evidence that the fire was arson. The arson investigators who testified in Willingham's case relied on traditional methods whose scientific validity had long ago been disproven, and the parole board apparently did not even bother to read the exonerating information provided to them by Willingham's lawyer.

Does Phillip Garrido deserve the death penalty?
Lexica
by Lexica  9-3-2009
More: The evidence that Phillip Garrido committed monstrous crimes, more than once, appears incontrovertible. I'm in no way suggesting that in his case, it might all be a horrible misunderstanding. But I find it interesting that in the same week Grann's essay wrongful execution of Cameron Todd Willingham ] appears, many people seem more interested in discussing whether rape should perhaps be added to the list of capital offenses, whether Garrido deserves execution — to say nothing of castration, torture, and other things we ostensibly don't approve of as a society — than in looking at how often our justice system sentences innocent people to death. And how, despite all the supposed failsafes in the system, in at least one case, the state of Texas appears to have murdered a man in cold blood.
