POPSDoes President of SEIU Have Preferential Access To White House? But you can't automatically disqualify an entry because of a large number of visitors: Stern was among the 393 guests at the White House's St. Patrick's Day event. As far as I can tell, THE Andrew Stern was the top outside visitor to the White House with approximately 20 visits, or about three visits per month, including four relatively small meetings with the president and a dozen with other White House staffers. Stern has openly bragged about the SEIU's $61 million investment in Barack Obama. It certainly bought him a lot of access. Update: And while we're on the subject of the SEIU, here's an interesting entry: On March 3, ACORN spokesman Scott Levenson met with White House political affairs director Patrick Gaspard, who came to the White House from SEIU. Unsurprising, given the groups' close ties. I wonder what they talked about. 10/30

POPSGoldman Profits. Do We Lose? From tech stocks to high gas prices, Goldman Sachs has engineered every major market manipulation since the Great Depression - and they're about to do it again. In a brilliant article that appears in the current issue of Rolling Stone magazine, "The Great American Bubble Machine" by Matt Taibbi, we can see in all its gory and horrendous detail what is so wrong with "the invisible hand of the marketplace." From the article: “any attempt to construct a narrative around all the former Goldmanites in influential positions quickly becomes an absurd and pointless exercise, like trying to make a list of everything. What you need to know is the big picture: If America is circling the drain, Goldman Sachs has found a way to be that drain — an extremely unfortunate loophole in the system of Western democratic capitalism, which never foresaw that in a society governed passively by free markets and free elections, organized greed always defeats disorganized democracy.”

POPSFeds Skewed Clunkers Results Trucks were also subject to lower fuel efficiency standards under the program, and analysts were initially surprised not to find more gas-guzzlers on the top 10 list. Seems the government stacked the deck to make its program look more environmentally sound than it is. (H/T j.leader for the tip) Is Cash for Clunkers green? You may be surprised by the facts. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/green/detail?blogid=49&entry_id=44867

POPSflag@whitehouse.gov Throws 3rd Party Groups Under The Bus in Email-Gate The White House told FOX News that third-party groups sending online petitions to the official administration Web site could be to blame for a rash of e-mails that have gone out to people who never requested them. The theory is that these groups are including the names and e-mails of members and petition-signers along with the petitions themselves, in turn embedding those e-mails into the White House distribution list. Are there other data mining methods that the White House used to attain individuals emails? Many people who have received the unwanted WH emails have stated that they they’re not members of any organization and have not been advocating for any cause. “I find it very disturbing and a little scary to say the least,” said Sarah Griffith, who got a widely circulated e-mail on health care reform from senior adviser David Axelrod last week. “I have no idea how they got my e-mail address, and they have it.”

POPS Guide To Obama Kitsch which may change over time. What makes this Guide "Official"? The same thing that made the The Official Guide to Blagojevich Blogs Official (Hint: The same thing that makes people think the Franklin Mint is related to the U.S. Mint, even though the commercial says it's not.) Since we are not trying to sell products, a link to a blog with a photo of the product is preferred. Please post suggested links as Comments, or e-mail me at contact/at/legalinsurrection/dot/com (if you can't figure out what to change in the address, I'm not sure I want your input). This list is a work in progress and will be updated frequently, so come back soon (there will be a left column link button to take you to this post). POPS Best.Craiglist.Ad.Ever This car was engineered by 3rd degree ninja super-warriors in the highest mountains of Japan to serve the needs of the man that cheats death on a daily basis. This brute comes with the things us testosterone-fueled super action junkies need. It has a 265 HP engine to outrun the cops. It's got special blood/gore resistant upholstery. It even has a first-aid kit in the back. You know what the first aid kit has in it? A pint of whiskey, a stitch-your-own-wound kit and a hunk of leather to bite down on when you're operating on yourself. The Xterra also has an automatic transmission so if you're being chased by Libyan terrorists, you'll still be able to shoot your machine gun out the window and drive at the same time. It's saved my bacon more than once.

POPSVery Cool Freeware: tinySpell Checking your spelling is simple: Option 1: While you are typing, tinySpell watches the text you enter and whenever it detects a misspelled word it beeps and shows a spelling tip, and the tinySpell icon in the system tray turns from white to yellow . Option 2: When you copy text to the clipboard tinySpell checks its spelling immediately. If it finds at least one misspelled word in the text it beeps and turns its icon to yellow. If the icon is white it means that no misspelled words were found in the clipboard text. Correcting a misspelled word is also simple: When a misspelled word is detected, click the tinySpell icon or press the hot-key to pop up a list of suggested replacement words. If the misspelled word is detected during on-the-fly checking or after a word is copied to the clipboard you can select a correction from the list. The selected word is inserted into your document, or is copied to the clipboard I don't use IE & it works just fine in Firefox

POPSHeart Healthiest Places To Live... The American Heart Association says Minneapolis, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco are the three most heart healthy U.S. metros for women. Down at the bottom of the list are Nashville, Tenn., St. Louis and Detroit. The comprehensive ranking took into account 22 different factors that affect women's heart health, ranging from exercise to high blood pressure. So what does this mean for you? In terms of trends, the list shows that if you're a woman living in the South or Midwest you may have a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. The experts say the problem in these regions is due to all too many fast-food joints, a tendency to drive rather than walk and high smoking rates. Do you live in one of these cities? POPSI'm Getting Healthy The Hard Way One final tip: Keep your sense of humor. "Years ago, my husband and I were having a big spat, really yelling at each other," says Verstegen. "I screamed at him, 'You're so selfish!' There was this long silence and then he said, 'Did you just call me a shellfish?' I started laughing and that was the end of the fight. " *LOL*

POPS Books On Alternative Medicine ABC News has an article today on "The Mystery Behind Alternative Cancer Treatment" .... a discussion on how cancer patients from Actress Farrah Fawcett and the late Coretta Scott King are now among the thousands of people who have turned to alternative approaches to cancer treatment when conventional medicine has failed. At the same time while browsing through an Indian book site (hat tip to analog and other stuff) I came across a section that he has dedicated to books on alternative medicine.
