POPSOct. 23,1983 Lebanese Terrorists Bomb the Marine Barracks in Beirut
. . with Syria. Although the United States had mounted two previous successful peacekeeping operations in Lebanon in 1958 and earlier in 1982 (to facilitate the evacuation of P.L.O. forces from Beirut that had been defeated by Israel), the ignominious end of the MNF intervention brought disastrous consequences. The failure of the peacekeeping mission led to renewed fighting between Lebanese factions and the ascendancy of Hezbollah, backed by Iran and Syria. Moreover, the Marine barracks bombing, which was the deadliest terrorist attack against Americans before the 9/11 attacks, later inspired Osama bin Laden, who viewed the United States as a “paper tiger” because of its rapid withdrawal of peacekeeping forces from Lebanon and Somalia after suffering casualties. Al Qaeda members were later dispatched to Hezbollah training camps in Lebanon, according to the 9/11 Commission Report (p. 68). Posted October 23rd, 2009 in American Leadership.

POPS10 Amazing Facts About Worldwide Water Use
More facts: Since 1950, water usage in the United States has risen 127 percent. If you shorten your showers by just a single minute, you can save approximately 700 gallons of water in a month. Letting the tap run when you brush your teeth wastes up to 4 gallons of water every time. It takes an average of 300 gallons to water your lawn. During the summer, this can account for almost half of your water usage. It takes an average of 300 gallons to water your lawn. During the summer, this can account for almost half of your water usage. Another wasteful desert endeavor, the proposed Waveyards water park in Mesa, Arizona will require up to 100 million gallons of groundwater every year in an area that receives a mere 8 inches of rainfall in that time. This last is particularly insane. All the Western states are in desperate need of water for crops and other basic uses. The Colorado River no longer reaches the sea. Salmon spawning grounds have almost disappeared and major animal (as we

POPSBites of passage Over the course of the past two or three decades, however, the Asian tiger mosquito has become considerably, prodigiously more mobile. It has circled the planet, emerging in Trinidad in 1983; Mexico in 1988; France in 1999; Cameroon in 2000; Nicaragua, Greece, Israel and Switzerland in 2003. It has colonised North and South America, Africa, and Europe, until it has become a great nuisance in Brazil, Albania, Nigeria, Mexico and Italy – “the most invasive mosquito in the world”, a team of researchers wrote in 2007, in the journal Vector-Borne Zoonotic Disease. The mosquito from the Southeast Asian jungle is also now a great nuisance in Trenton, New Jersey – the greatest present-day mosquito nuisance in a wetland state whose history is written in waves of mosquito infestation.

POPSFairy Tales older than previously thought more: Contrary to the view that the tale originated in France shortly before Charles Perrault produced the first written version in the 17th century, Dr Tehrani found that the varients shared a common ancestor dating back more than 2,600 years. He said: “Over time these folk tales have been subtly changed and have evolved just like an biological organism. Because many of them were not written down until much later, they have been misremembered or reinvented through hundreds of generations. “By looking at how these folk tales have spread and changed it tells us something about human psychology and what sort of things we find memorable.

POPSEU makes new appeal to Iran over nuclear program If this weren't so deadly serious it could be a real joke. Iran has already given it's answer. They don't give a whit about any "sanctions" or whatever else the West might propose. Are they not laughing their behinds off at the statement: "We have a very generous offer on the table..."? Iran has already become a very prominent force around the world. They have nothing to gain by spending 2 seconds in negotiations other than buying more time. Someone needs to say to Israel (since the US is now a toothless tiger and a servant to Russia) "go"!!!

POPSMan-Eating Bird - Non-Fiction
WOW!!! With a wingspan of up to three metres and weighing 18kg, the female was twice as big as the largest living eagle, the Steller's sea eagle. And the bird's talons were as big as a tiger's claws. "It was certainly capable of swooping down and taking a child," said Paul Scofield, the curator of vertebrate zoology at the Canterbury Museum. "They had the ability to not only strike with their talons but to close the talons and put them through quite solid objects such as a pelvis. It was designed as a killing machine." Its main prey would have been moa, flightless birds which grew to as much as 250kg and 2.5 metres tall. "In some fossil sites, moa bones have been found with signs of eagle predation," Dr Scofield said. New Zealand has no native land mammals because it became isolated from other continents in the Cretaceous, more than 65 million years ago. As a result, birds filled niches usually populated by large mammals such as deer and cattle. "Haast's eagle wasn't just the e
