WP: Abu Ghraib Tactics Were First Used at Guantanamo
righthand
by righthand  8-6-2007    3
Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller, who commanded the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay and later helped set up U.S. operations at Abu Ghraib, was accused of failing to properly supervise Qahtani's interrogation plan and was recommended for reprimand by investigators. Miller would have been the highest-ranking officer to face discipline for detainee abuses so far, but Gen. Bantz Craddock, head of the U.S. Southern Command, declined to follow the recommendation. Within weeks of his departure from Abu Ghraib, military working dogs were being used in interrogations, and naked detainees were humiliated and abused by military police soldiers working the night shift. Some of the Abu Ghraib soldiers have said they were following the directionsof military intelligence officials to soften up detainees for interrogation, in part by depriving them of sleep. The photos that caused alarm around the world included some showing the MPs sexually humiliating the detainees

Clintons Dumped Socks!

This says a lot about one's character IMO, or lack thereof. Where I come from, pets are family . Pets are *people*. You do not abandon them. They are not "things" you just toss away on a whim. Pets are "adoptions, not aquisitions." Watch out Hillary, there are lots of voting animal lovers out there. Wouldn't it be a thrill, if a cat got to influence who became president... or not? Yay, go Socks!! . "No pet left behind" Hillary!!

100 Greatest TV Quotes and Catchphrases
haraya
by haraya  12-9-2006    4
Clipped 30/100, more at the source. These are the favorite lines that have entered into the everlasting human lexicon. The 70s are heavily represented (e.g. "Smile, you're on `Candid Camera'"). Saturday Night Live provided many favorites through the years (e.g."Well, isn't that special?", Dana Carvey as the Church Lady), but recent additions are relatively sparse — and somewhat lame — (e.g. "Bam!" from Emeril Lagasse, "Emeril Live"). A series of shows on TV Land will commemorate the list in mid-December. What TV pop culture quotes and catchphrases from the past do you think should have made the list? - Plastic.com

how scary is that rollercoaster?
hobo_attic
by hobo_attic  10-10-2007    2
this must be top thrill dragster at cedar point. i am a roller coaster junkie but if i didn't pee myself it's because i was too afraid to do even that. the worst part is actually just waiting for the lights to signal the start of the ride 0 to 120 mph in 4 seconds. i was so shook up my first time on this that all i could say to my sister (while momentarily paused at the top) was "I'm in fear". i'm pretty sure they just got a pic of a pee pants, but it's funny in an immature way anyways.

We Can't Fire the President Right Now, So We're Waiting It Out.
cniq_cniq
by cniq_cniq  7-16-2007    5
As a lifelong Red Sox fan the joy of 2004 was made even sweeter by the pain of disappointment I still harbored from 1986. Politically, I look forward to a similar day when I can enter a voting booth with enthusiasm. My first opportunity to vote in 1988 was as much a disappointment as a thrill. I had missed by four years the sole man who was worthy of that vote. In that election, and in every election since, I have held my nose entering the polls -- always voting for the lessor of two evils. I trust that the day I venture to vote without such regrets and put my disappointments since 1988 behind me will be just as sweet as the end of my drought in 2004.

Stratosphere Tower!
vandamonium
by vandamonium  9-15-2007    4
Stratosphere tower! Holy wow! Insanity the Ride, opened in 2005, at 900 feet (274 m) is the second highest thrill ride in the world, it dangles riders over the edge of the tower and then spins in a circular pattern at approximately forty miles per hour. Since its public opening, the ride has stopped twice with passengers onboard (upwards of an hour each time), due to high winds that trigger a "safety mechanism" which shuts down the machine immediately without bringing the passengers back to the loading doc....

Sublime Thrill of Terror
abailart
by abailart  4-7-2008    2
Hard to clip but interesting source for those who thrill to dark terrors. First part of clip is Kant. Since the preconceptualised object is not present, as in the perception of beauty, sublime (cp sublimation too) experiences are beyond neatness and categorisation, and whether or not one has experienced the sublime (as opposed, say, to a confusion engendered by bricolage) is not assignable to truth value or expression.

Is The Thrill Gone For Obama Supporters?
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  7-15-2008    12
Obama Fades? I can't speak for anyone else but for me his glow has dimmed, since he started wearing that flag lapel pin. While living through years of the worst president the US has had at the helm, I could identify the enemy or the Bush supporters by their Bush/Neocon fraternity pins. And I could direct my anger even before the Bushy sycophants opened their bombastic collective rhetorical pie-holes and blather the some ole, same ole. So the flag label pin had become a symbol of pretentious superciliousness to me. Of course, with Obama pandering to the "R's" and the "I's" who voted for Dubya and helped ruin our country and make us a laughing stock all over the world (Remember the headline from the UK’s Daily Mirror: How Can 1,230,065 People Be So Dumb?) may have a little to do with the Obama Fade From Grace. But that PIN is all I see when this eloquent orator takes center stage and its glare has a blinding effect on the reflection of the man behind that "R" studded brooch. :-(

Quotes about Obama
willhelm
by willhelm  7-7-2008    2
"Barack Obama is our collective representation of our purest hopes, our highest visions and our deepest knowings . . . He's our product out of the all-knowing quantum field of intelligence." -- Eve Konstantine "This is bigger than Kennedy. . . . This is the New Testament." | "I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don't have that too often. No, seriously. It's a dramatic event." -- Chris Matthews " creative imagination which coupled with brilliance equals wisdom . . . the man for this time." -- Toni Morrison "Obama's finest speeches do not excite. They do not inform. They don't even really inspire. They elevate. . . . He is not the Word made flesh, but the triumph of word over flesh . . . Obama is, at his best, able to call us back to our highest selves." -- Ezra Klein

Heath's Joker Is The Thrill Of The "Knight"
merrie
by merrie  6-30-2008    5
Spoiler alert: This is not a review of the latest Batman installment, "The Dark Knight," but don't read on if you want to be totally surprised at the theater! Director Chris Nolan's latest installment of Batman, shown to a packed IMAX house Saturday in LA, made good on many of the amped-up promises touted in its trailers: cooler new toys, groundbreaking cinematography, a darker tone and the genesis of a villain named Two-Face. In this flick, Ledger showed us what a masterful actor he was - certainly deserving of a posthumous Oscar nomination. Ledger developed a whole new body language for the character. His Joker's tendency to lick his lips and blink extra slowly gives him, at times, the appearance of a demonic lizard.
