POPSDIY soap – cleaning up your act Half way recipes (in which you take a pure form of soap and spruce it up) can be easy to do at home. You can use Castille soap to make several varieties of body wash. Here is one recipe: Vanilla Almond Soap 1/3 cup whole almonds 1 4-ounce bar Castille soap 1/4 cup distilled water 1 tablespoon almond oil 1/8 teaspoon vanilla essential oil Grind the almonds in a food processor or coffee grinder. Using a cheese grater or a knife, shred the bar of Castille soap. Boil the water and add the shredded soap, stirring until you get a nice gooey texture. Reduce to a simmer and then add in the almond grinds, oil and vanilla. You can spoon the soap into molds (ice cubes can make little gift soaps) and let it sit for around five hours until it hardens.

POPSFood of the Week: Beets Store beets unwashed in the refrigerator crisper where they will keep for two to four weeks. Cut the majority of the greens and their stems from the roots, so they do not pull away moisture away from the root. Leave about two inches of the stem attached to prevent the roots from "bleeding." Store the unwashed greens in a separate plastic bag where they will keep fresh for about four days. Raw beets do not freeze well since they tend to become soft upon thawing. Freezing cooked beets is fine; they'll retain their flavor and texture.

POPSBaby RIce Gourmet Popcorn I'm not shilling for these people, but if you love popcorn you haven't lived until you've had a bowl of baby-rice popcorn. If you live in the farm belt, seek some out locally. Be sure to buy a large quantity, because once you've had it, there's no going back to Orville.

POPSThe Night Sky In All Its Grandeur Our eyes have some detail-discerning properties that not even the best long-exposure photograph can match. This advantage is considerable in the case of the Milky Way, which has such great extent that it does not require a telescope. I can recall with great fondness one particular night nearly 35-years ago, spent under the dark skies of upstate New York's Adirondack Mountains where I spent a considerable amount of time savoring the Milky Way in all of its magnificence. So clear was the sky, that rather than appearing as a filmy band of light, the Milky Way appeared granulated in texture, and glowed so bright that it actually cast faint shadows! The article continues to describe the various categories of night skies according to how far out of a major city one lives.

POPSFood of the week: Olives Tips for Preparing Olives: To pit olives, press them with the flat side of a broad bladed knife. This will help break the flesh so that you can easily remove the pit with your fingers or the knife. The brine in which olives are packed can be used as a replacement for salted water in recipes. Toss pasta with chopped olives, tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and fresh herbs of your choice. Marinate olives in olive oil, lemon zest, coriander seeds and cumin seeds.

POPSLemon Cream Scones This is another favorite recipe, and it's easy to make, but a bit fiddly. In fact they are so good, i doubt you would find better scones anywhere. I haven't tried it, but i imagine a person could take the basic recipe and fool around with additions--like maybe dried cranberry instead of the apricot? Please see source for complete recipe (it was over limit).

POPSChef's recipe: Summer Pudding
Recipe continues: Toss the firmer berries (such as currants and blueberries) with the sugar and lemon juice, then place in a suitable pan. Bring to a simmer. Add the softer fruit and continue cooking just until the juices start to run (overcooking will spoil the fresh flavours). Remove from the heat and reserve. Line a 1.5-litre glass or china bowl with the bread, overlapping slightly and pressing the edges of the slices together. Pour in the fruit. Cover the top with more bread to completely enclose. Press down using the flat of your hand; juice will start to seep up and through the bread. Place the filled bowl on a large plate. Then place a smaller plate (small enough to allow some downward movement within the bowl) on top. Place a weight of about 3 pounds on top of the small plate and leave in the fridge overnight. The next day there will be a good amount of juice either on the large plate or in the bowl on top of the small plate: Reserve this juice. More below ....

POPSSmell the Roses (or Coffee)!
Who hasn't taken a trip down memory lane with a mere whiff of a familiar scent? Whether it's the woodsy smell of some old furniture that reminds you of your wonderful time in grade school, or a particular cologne that fills you with the bittersweet memories of an old lover, scents have a powerful way of stopping us in our tracks and at times filling us up with rather intense emotions--both good or bad. Yes, it's not just the information that we recall with a scent, but more importantly the emotions that go along with the memory. According to the following article, scents go straight to the limbic system in the brain, the very place our emotions are triggered. Is it any wonder why aromatherapy is so effective in calming nerves and revitalizing one's energy? Of course, it helps that when we smell something pleasant, we take in slower, deeper breaths--often the very action that soothes us and clears our mind. So take your time when you wake up tomorrow and smell the rich, texture

POPSDoctor Who Treated Her Own Cancer on South Pole Dies “Somebody should tell us, right at the start of our lives, that we are dying. Then we might live life to the limit, every minute of every day. Do it! I say. Whatever you want to do, do it now! There are only so many tomorrows.” - Pope Paul VI
