POPSPart I The Marijuana FACTS
Quality paints and varnishes were made from hemp seed oil until 1937. 58,000 tons of hemp seeds were used in America for paint products in 1935; Sherman Williams Paint Co. testimony before Congress against the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act. * Henry Ford's first Model-T was built to run on hemp gasoline and the CAR ITSELF WAS CONTRUCTED FROM HEMP! On his large estate, Ford was photographed among his hemp fields. The car, 'grown from the soil,' had hemp plastic panels whose impact strength was 10 times stronger than steel; Popular Mechanics, 1941. * Hemp called 'Billion Dollar Crop.' It was the first time a cash crop had a business potential to exceed a billion dollars; Popular Mechanics, Feb., 1938. * Mechanical Engineering Magazine (Feb. 1938) published an article entitled 'The Most Profitable and Desirable Crop that Can be Grown.' It stated that if hemp was cultivated using 20th Century technology, it would be the single largest agricultural crop in the U.S. and the rest of the wor

POPSFarmers plant hemp seeds on DEA's front lawn As anyone who isn't smoking crack has already figured out (and even a few who are), America's drug policy is a scandalous failure. Not only has the so-called "War on Drugs" utterly failed to stop the flow of recreational drugs in America, it has criminalized struggling farmers who seek to grow industrial hemp as a profitable, renewable crop that's in high demand across multiple industries.

POPSFarmers Arrested Planting Hemp on DEA Headquarters Lawn Hemp is not a drug and has no capacity to get someone stoned. Currently eight states -- Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana, North Dakota, Vermont, and West Virginia -- allow industrial hemp production or research, but federal law, which requires nearly-impossible-to-obtain-permits to grow hemp, trumps those state laws. A bill introduced by Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) would allow states to craft their own policies. Some facts from North American Industrial Hemp Council: Hemp has been grown for at least the last 12,000 years for fiber (textiles and paper) and food. Hemp oil once greased machines. Most paints, resins, shellacs, and varnishes used to be made out of linseed (from flax) and hemp oils. Rudolph Diesel designed his engine to run on hemp oil The products that can be made from hemp number over 25,000.

POPSYou Need a Lineup to Know Who the Scum Are The other day, an organization I thought was great - CARE - Asked me and thousands of others to buy Old Navy GAP and Banana Republic items on sale, so GAP would make a big donation to CARE. I had no handy list to see if those companies were not involved in child labor or abusive labor practices. It took me a while to find out that buying those products contributes to labor and child trafficking. We need the list that our government has and is supposed to publish!

POPSSlave Labor. Tell the Department of Labor To Release Its List of Goods Reasons why this is so important: Slavery by kidnapping and by forced labor is highly profitable. Human trafficking has become an overwhelming problem which is offsetting the nerves of our government, robbing our families of loved ones, and destryong the lives of thousands of children and adults throughout the states and abroad. They must be backed into a corner, with a clear message that bully tactics and slavery won't be tolerated. There are repercussions for their actions.

POPSBeijing's breath-taking new library (Pictures by yours truly) So "Phase II" of the National Library of China just opened down the block from my apartment, and it is absolutely amazing. Filled with open space and natural light, it is gigantic yet personal, with the feeling of a pavilion. Long lines of sight that stretch uninterrupted out into the city blur the division between indoor and outdoor. Their website is also pretty cool - in English, and with lots of digitized collections, making it worthwhile for anyone wanting to learn more about China.

POPSThe Hemp Revolution [documentary] I firmly believe that economic and environmental imperatives will compel America to re-examine our relationship to this plant. It's going to get to the point where people realize that, aside from recreational use, it's just too damn useful a plant and it grows damn well just about anywhere. The cannabis plant helped defeat Germany and Japan. HEMP FOR VICTORY!

POPSAnthropology Museum database to go online
article continues: Nearly 50 artifacts connected to the Cherokee culture including baskets, ceremonial pipes, jewelry, ceramics and a range of other objects can be found in the database. Thousands of American Indian projectile points, most of them found in North Carolina, have also been cataloged. The oldest artifact in the collection dates to 10,000 B.C. Archaeology and anthropology enthusiasts can search by country to find objects from a particular geographic area or by culture, such as the Hopi, to find all objects in the collection associated with that culture. People can also search for a type of artifact. For example, by entering “basket” as a search term, someone could find records for more than 150 baskets in the collection. Anyone can use the database, but the database will be particularly valuable for North Carolina teachers, said Stephen Whittington, director of the museum. Teachers can use images and the descriptions from the database to plan lessons
