Ancient Blueprints of Calculus Uncovered in Archimedes Text
Kore7
by Kore7  10-6-2007    10
Details have been released from the nine-year-long reconstruction project to recover the Greek mathematician's writings from this one-of-a-kind find and the results are fascinating. Buried beneath the surface of this gilded palimpsest, researchers discovered more extensive demonstrations of concepts such as infinite series, approximations, limits, and integral calculus than had been known to exist in ancient times. Archimedes wrote The Method almost two thousand years before Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz developed calculus in the 1700s. Reviel Netz, an historian of mathematics at Stanford University who transcribed the text, says that the examination of Archimedes' work has revealed "a new twist on the entire trajectory of Western mathematics."

The Code Even the CIA Can't Crack
carrerinyes
by carrerinyes  5-4-2009    2
and the elusiveness of truth, its message written entirely in code. Almost 20 years after its dedication, the text has yet to be fully deciphered. A bleary-eyed global community of self-styled cryptanalysts—along with some of the agency's own staffers—has seen three of its four sections solved, revealing evocative prose that only makes the puzzle more confusing. Still uncracked are the 97 characters of the fourth part (known as K4 in Kryptos-speak). And the longer the deadlock continues, the crazier people get.

An ancient Tibetan Book of the Dead 1-10
einbar
by einbar  12-29-2008    3
Shot over a 4-month period, the film contains footage of the rites and liturgies for a deceased Ladakhi elder and includes an interview with the Dalai Lama, who shares his view on the book's meaning and importance.. An ancient source of strength and guidance in dealing with life and death. The Tibetan Book of the Dead remains an essential teaching in the Buddhist cultures of the Himalayas. Narrated by Leonard Cohen, this enlightening programme explores the sacred text and boldly visualizes the afterlife according to its profound wisdom. A WAY OF LIFE reveals the history of The Tibetan Book of the Dead and examines its traditional use in Northern India, as well as its acceptance in Western hospices.

Mapping Kerouac: The Grammatical Artwork of Stefanie Posavec
Kore7
by Kore7  4-12-2008    9
Posavec dissects every word, phrase, sentence, and subject of Kerouac's On the Road to invent new ways of looking at the familiar masterpiece. The diagrams make for beautiful art in their own right. (See source for high-res pictures.) In her structure analysis, each chapter explodes in a color-coded starburst of topical breakdowns. At a glance, you can see Kerouac's focus wander from the sketches of local life in the beginning, to depictions of work and travel in the middle, with women and the subject of love dominating the latter chapters. The comparative sentence diagrams are what really drew me in. It's fascinating to behold an entire literary work all at once on one page. What's more, Kerouac's casual prose style can be differentiated immediately from the stately, grandiose writing of Faulkner, not to mention the terse, claustrophobic style of Orwell's fiction. Literary reductionism at its most fun and beautiful.

Is Phaistos Disc a forgery?
invictus
by invictus  7-12-2008    2
If Dr. Jerome Eisenberg's claims are true, then it means the Phaistos Disc discovery of 1908 deserves to be recorded as "the biggest archaeological hoax of the century". Could it be possible? Could all the archaeologists and experts of the past 100 years who curiously examined the disc, fail to spot a professionally done forgery? I doubt it but we'll learn the truth soon.

World's Oldest Bible Now Online
Jorjor
by Jorjor  7-6-2009    9
The Codex Sinaiticus is the oldest known complete copy of the Judaeo-Christian bible known to exist. It is now online, and it will give you a chance to read a text uncorrupted by the fog of translation. Of course, you'll have to be fluent in classical Greek and a number of other dead languages, but, after all, if you're serious about scripture, what's a little learning?

Very Long-Term Backup- Rosetta
wildcat
by wildcat  8-26-2008
One side of the disk contains a graphic teaser. The design shows headlines in the eight major languages of the world today spiraling inward in ever-decreasing size till it becomes so small you have trouble reading it, yet the text goes on getting smaller. The sentences announce: “Languages of the World: This is an archive of over 1,500 human languages assembled in the year 02008 C.E. Magnify 1,000 times to find over 13,000 pages of language documentation.” This graphic side of the disk is pure titanium. A black oxide coating has been added to the surface. The text is etched into that, revealing the whiter titanium. This bold sign board is needed because the pages of genesis which are etched on the mirror-like opposite side of the disk are nearly invisible.
