Scaring Us Into Stupidity
debbyski
by debbyski  Yesterday 6:27 PM    5
"Have we learned anything from the revelations that the Bush administration lied us into the need for a war in Iraq, lied about the need for torture, lied about the reason for spying, loss of constitutional rights, and an overwhelmingly powerful executive branch? Have we learned anything from the discovery that unnecessary war, torture and panic over sporadic terrorist attacks create more terrorism and reduce national security? Or will our fear of the underwear bomber and other terrorist acts scare us into stupidity again, as it did so many people during the Bush years?"

How Long Must Terrorism Go On? How Long?

You're in charge - sort of... Terrorism
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  12-29-2009
Self-defense on an airliner is admirable but not something to depend upon for security - neither is requiring full body scans. Why? Think about it? We have had nine years to launch some sort of effective national homeland security system. We still don't have one that can even tell us who is who working at airport, seaports, land border crossings. Several billion have been spent on consultants and tests and - nada. The objective of terrorists is to make themselves appear much more powerful than they are to convince politicians and voters to take actions that will exaggerate the importance of the terrorists. Fully fund and cooperate with Interpol to search out and arrest the infrastructure for illiegal actions they are all involved with.

Dear Secretary Napolitano: Can you tell me how "the system worked"?
Lexica
by Lexica  12-29-2009
More: Fact: Abdulmutallab boarded Flight KL 588 on Dec 24th with an incendiary device in Lagos, Nigeria - Fact: Abdulmutallab boarded Flight NW 253 on Dec 25th with an incendiary device in Amsterdam, Netherlands - Fact: There was no Federal Air Marshal on board NW253. …My questions regarding Secretary Napolitano’s view that the system worked will probably never be answered, however every time I watch her be interviewed for the past few days I have to wonder what she is thinking dolling out the company line than the system is working. How many red-flags does one need to get secondary screening? How many red-flags does one need to be placed on a no-fly list? I’d think that being on a terrorist watch list; applying for a bogus Visa to the UK; and your father walking into the US Embassy and telling them that his son may carry out a terrorist attack on the US should all be red-flags…but what do I know…The System Worked Happy Flying!

Yemen terror camps attract 'stream of Britons'
foxyarse
by foxyarse  12-28-2009    1
Security officials in Yemen said today that 29 al-Qaida suspects had been arrested as part of a new crackdown on the terrorist group. "There is a steady stream of people travelling to Yemen and travel to Yemen is something that is of concern to us," said a UK security source. Tonight, al-Qaida militants in the region posted a statement on the internet claiming responsibility for the failed bomb attempt, which it said was meant to avenge US attacks on the group in Yemen. The statement called for the killing of western embassy workers in the region warning of "all-out war on the crusaders"

Christmas bomb bid complicates Gitmo plan
billpar
by billpar  12-28-2009
Christmas Day bombing attempt aboard Northwest Flight 253, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, reportedly spent time in Yemen after graduating from a London university in 2008. According to ABC News, Abdulmutallab has told authorities that, while in Yemen, Al Qaeda operatives crafted the explosive device that was sewn into Abdulmutallab’s underwear. “Yesterday just highlights the fact that sending this many people back — or any people back — to Yemen right now is a really bad idea,” said Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.), the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee. “It’s just dumb. ... If you made a list of what the three dumbest countries would be to send people back to, Yemen would be on all the lists.” “I think it’s a major mistake,” Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) said about prisoner releases to Yemen.

Pilots warns against knee-jerk reaction to terrorism
jatfla
by jatfla  12-27-2009
Well, what an amazing article! Pilots are concerned about 'knee-jerk reactions"? I would think they would be among the first to take this continuing AND accelerating tactic more seriously. Of course, they don't want the flying-public to be frightened away from flying for many reasons; especially financial. He speaks of "heightened security measures"...how about implementing those that are already in place? And most revolting is when this person asks the idiotic question concerning what the flying-public should expect from it's security workers!!!! "Minimal wages" are an excuse for sloppy, inefficient, lack, non-existent, irresponsible work performance??!!! Amazing.

DHS Sec.Napolitano: "The System Worked" on Attempted Al-Qaeda Plane Bombing
merrie
by merrie  12-27-2009    2
For the first three months of this administration, they refused to use the word terrorism." Per Napolitano, "the system worked" (see the video, also at peekurl.com/vjvx1c2). Let's Roll 2 by Mark Steyn On December 25th 2009, the government's (post-9/11) security procedures all failed, and the only good news came once again from alert individuals: (Jasper) Schuringa, sitting in seat 20J, in the right-most section of the Airbus 330, looked to his left. "I saw smoke rising from a seat ... I didn’t hesitate. I just jumped," he said. "I searched on his body parts and he had his pants open. He had something strapped to his legs." The unassuming hero ripped the flaming, molten object " which resembled a small, white shampoo bottle " off Abdul Mutallab’s left leg, near his crotch. He said he put out the fire with his bare hands. Schuringa yelled for water, and members of the flight crew soon appeared with fire extinguishers.

The Necessity of An Educator
GlennFrancoSimmons
by GlennFrancoSimmons  12-25-2009
It is not correct to say all religions are the same; they are not. However, it is truthful to say that all divinely inspired religions, and their Manifestations (Moses, Krishna, Zoroaster, Jesus Christ, Muhammad, etc.) receive Their inspiration from the same Source, the Ancient of Days. So why do we fight? Why is blood shed? Why is there terrorism? Why are there wars? Why is there such a disparity of wealth and poverty in this world, where we are all one, created by the same loving God? Why all this misery when we are brothers and sisters of the same human family where the artificial concept known as race doesn't matter a bit. We are one human race with a magnificent diversity of cultures, lifestyles, viewpoints and religions.

The poor pay the most
PrinceDanteRose
by PrinceDanteRose  12-22-2009
No matter what the nature of loss, either natural disaster or acts of terrorism and war, it is always the poor that pay the most. The rich have more insulation in the form of greater resources, often more dispersed in the economy and geographically. A poor person has one house, a rich person may have multiple houses, more likely to be insured against loss. The poor also don't have the same means of escaping danger as the rich do. They can't flee the country, they can't fly away on a plane, or speed away in their cars.

Pakistani court orders noses of spurned men to be cut off
foxyarse
by foxyarse  12-22-2009    2
Pakistan's legal system has Islamic elements that sometimes lead to orders for harsh punishments, but the sentences are often overturned and rarely carried out. Serious crimes are often referred to anti-terrorism courts in Pakistan because they move faster. Violence against women, especially attacks by spurned lovers, also occurs frequently in this impoverished South Asian nation. The men have seven days to appeal, Ahmed said.
