A Guide to Understanding the Tactics of the Southern Poverty Law Center in the Immigration Debate
Antara
by Antara  11-8-2009
It is therefore essential that we thoroughly examine and respond to the charges and the motives of those leveling the accusations. This publication is designed for the media, legislators and others who are actively involved in writing about or formulating immigration policy. Its purpose is to provide: * An overview of the unscrupulous tactics now being used in the immigration debate which distort factual reporting and limit meaningful debate. * A summary of FAIR’s 30-year record of advocacy on immigration. * An examination into the SPLC’s motives, terminology and techniques used against FAIR and others. * An objective third party analysis of the SPLC’s tactics and motivations. * Conclusions and suggestions for fair reporting and open mindedness.

GTD Toolbox: 100+ Resources for Getting Things Done
billpar
by billpar  8-27-2009
folks, I have tried a simple and elegant tool which I like more than any other thicker tool that I have tried. MonkeyGTD - awesome features - built on TiddlyWiki - works from my USB (also known as an extension of my body) - and preserves the original elegance (terminology, philosophy, etc) of GTD. Frankly I love it. check it out... It's way better than many/most of the ones listed here. well - RTM does come close with it's gears based version - and I really love the way it parses dates intelligently - but that's more a task manager function than a GTD function. But if you ask me to pick , I will choose MonkeyGTD! (though, I need to admit, the learning curve is more for MonkeyGTD if you havenot used a tiddly before)

Republican senator: Health care bill is bad enough we don't need to lie about it
Lexica
by Lexica  8-12-2009
More: Murkowski said the nation's health care system needs reform to control costs and improve access to care, but bad legislation will only make it worse. Last month, she voted against a health reform measure that emerged from the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. "I'll be honest with you," Murkowski said. "There are things that are in this bill that are bad enough that we don't need to be making things up."

CBO deals new blow to health plan
dl211
by dl211  7-26-2009    3
On his White House blog, Orszag – who served as CBO director in 2007 and 2008 – downplayed the office's small probable savings number in favor of the proposal's more speculative long-term benefits. "The point of the proposal, however, was never to generate savings over the next decade. ... Instead, the goal is to provide a mechanism for improving quality of care for beneficiaries and reducing costs over the long term," Orszag wrote. "In other words, in the terminology of our belt-and-suspenders approach to a fiscally responsible health reform, the IMAC is a game changer not a scoreable offset." But scoreable offsets are the immediate savings that fiscally conservative Blue Dogs and other Democratic moderates have been pushing for precisely because they will help offset the bill's cost. Global Cooling Trend Continues-CO2 Levels Unchanged
Eaglewings
by Eaglewings  7-13-2009    24
Even without CAP AND TRADE planet earth seems to be on a cooling trend. Since 1998 the temperatures on planet earth have been cooling. Even the ECO Terrorists had to change their terminology from GLOBAL warming to climate change. Now then I ask any thinking person to pause for just a moment and ask this one simple question. If the planet has been cooling for the last 10 years while carbon dioxide emissions have not been reduced by any significant amount, is it therefore reasonable to conclude that CO2 has absolutely nothing to do with GLOBAL WARMING? In fact the biggest contributing factor to global warming is, you guessed it, THE SUN!

Dangers of NeuroBabble
abailart
by abailart  5-27-2009    6
A very important point is being made in this article. While the materialist reduction of identity is as philosophically risible as it has always been, the ideological aspects of the discourses which see so much hot- eyed enthusiasm for popularised neuroscience require attention. The article concludes: "Hard-line identity theorists, and eliminativists above all, don’t appreciate how much they would change things if indeed we could come to believe and implement their theories. Our world would increasingly be leeched of meaning, morality, dignity and freedom, and if we rejected folk psychology in favour of scientific terminology about brain states, not only would we know less, not more, about ourselves; we would also have less to know about, because we would be less."

Stand Up, Joe Klein, So We Can Kick Your A**

as "ass welt journalism" Part of the problem is that journalism terminology glorifies "shoe-leather reporting," whereby you pound the pavement so often you wear out the soles of your shoes. Yet there's no widely used term of approbation for the other kind of reporting. For this very reason, my New Republic colleague Franklin Foer and I decided a few years ago to coin a phrase: ass-welt reporting. I'm not saying that every news story could be reported without leaving one's desk. (Bernstein: "Woodward, look! I found a clip from 1971 in which President Nixon tells the Omaha World-Herald he plans to order his goons to break into Democratic headquarters in the Watergate Hotel!" Woodward: "I'll cancel that meeting with Deep Throat.") I'm simply saying that, sometimes, laziness can be the better part of valor. "Laziness"? Grrr justoneminute - tom mcguire http://justoneminute.typepad.com/main/2009/05/stand-up-joe-klein-so-we-can-kick-your-a.html linked to julescrittenden

Nazi camps: Hell on earth
smellydiaper
by smellydiaper  4-10-2009    4
On April 9, 1945, the inmates of the Buchenwald death camp near Weimar, Germany, sent a radio message to inform the Allies that the Nazis were forcing them to evacuate the camp, and to request assistance. After they received promises of help from the U.S. Third Army, they stormed the watchtowers and killed the remaining guards using arms they had been collecting since 1942. The Americans, who reached Buchenwald on April 11, liberated 21,000 prisoners. Extermination was the goal of the death camps, where the "inferior people," especially Jews, Gypsies, Slavs, Soviets, and anyone else who was not an "Aryan" according to the contemporary Nazi race terminology, were forced. Over three million of the six million European and Soviet Jews died there, as well as four million Russians and hundreds of thousands of other Soviet peoples (out of the total 27 million who perished in WWII), approximately 200,000 Gypsies, as well as Serbs, Poles and others.

It doesn't work.
sillysam
by sillysam  10-21-2008
You don't have to look at socialist countries to know that redistribution of income punishes success and rewards sloth. We've seen it here. Our welfare system was intended to help the poor — but because it was poorly structured, it wound up discouraging work and marriage, thus prolonging poverty rather than alleviating it for many. Here's another problem for Sen. Obama: He wants to spread the wealth around as if wealth and poverty and “middle-classness” (to use the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's terminology) were fixed categories. They aren't. Economic and social mobility in the United States is the norm, not the exception.
