The Gold of Varna Prehistoric Necropolis
alanocu
by alanocu  5-13-2008    9
"There are crouched and extended inhumations. Some graves do not contain a skeleton, but grave gifts (cenotaphs). Interestingly, the symbolic (empty) graves are the richest in gold artifacts. 3000 gold artifacts were found, with a weight of approximately 6 kilograms. Grave 43 (photo) contained more gold than has been found in the entire rest of the world for that epoch. Three symbolic graves contained masks of unburnt clay. The findings showed that the Varna culture had trade relations with distant lands (possibly including the lower Volga and the Cyclades), perhaps exporting metal goods and salt from the Provadiya rock salt mine. The copper ore used in the artifacts originated from a Sredna Gora mine near Stara Zagora, and Mediterranean Spondylus shells found in the graves may have served as primitive currency." Bulldoze then claim Ancient Village never existed!
righthand
by righthand  4-1-2008    5
In 2003 all the townships ranked among the eight poorest areas of Israel. But of the newly built communities around Beer Sheva, with their predominantly Jewish populations, two were in the top five wealthiest areas of the country. However, the seven townships to which it wants the Bedouin to move are already overcrowded and have poor living conditions - in stark contrast to the new communities being built nearby for Israelis relocating to the Negev.

What Is A Romantic Friendship?
debbyski
by debbyski  1-18-2008    6
"Recent critics have opted for a wide range of terminology to describe the poet's relationship with Sue, some calling it a "romantic friendship," others outing her outright. The prevalence of both hetero- and homoerotic imagery in her writings suggests that Dickinson was bisexual, but did she regard herself as such? And, if she did, how are we to know?"

20 Signs You May Be About to Die
swampfoxz
by swampfoxz  12-24-2007    1
I recall reading about an obscure native culture in which the concept of death is fluid rather than fixed. You might be “dead” (somewhat sick), “very dead” (extremely ill) or “completely dead” (actually deceased) according to their terminology. The following 20 funny photos have been organized by these darkly funny and fatalistic categories!

Conservatives Do Not Have A Monopoly On Religion
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  10-22-2007    2
These days the Christian Conservatives have worked really really hard to portray the left as secular enemies of the faith, and spread the myth that one cannot be a good Christian and a political liberal, that the left-wing agenda of using the government to care for the needy, defend freedoms and protect the weak is somehow in fundamental conflict with the teachings of Jesus. Now, I normally don't like to tell Christians how they should interpret their faith, and I'm not going to start now, but I think any Christian should seriously consider the following question: What in the teachings of Jesus would condone discrimination against social pariahs (like gays)? What in the anecdotes in the New Testament would encourage the savage me-first capitalism of Bush's Republican Party? As an outsider, I don't see the connection. Actually, I'd have a sincere interest in how Christianity has become so conflated with conservativism, so if anyone cares to explain their side, I'm all ears.

The Universe - A ClipXploration * 3
skwirlinator
by skwirlinator  9-9-2007    1
Here is information on the show Stephen Hawking's Universe. There is a nice message from Stephen= "Where do we come from? How did the universe begin? Why is the universe the way it is? How will it end? "All my life, I have been fascinated by the big questions that face us, and have tried to find scientific answers to them. If, like me, you have looked at the stars, and tried to make sense of what you see, you too have started to wonder what makes the universe exist. The questions are clear, and deceptively simple. But the answers have always seemed well beyond our reach. Until now. "The ideas which had grown over two thousand years of observation have had to be radically revised. In less than a hundred years, we have found a new way to think of ourselves. From sitting at the center of the universe, we now find ourselves orbiting an average-sized sun, which is just one of millions of stars in our own Milky Way galaxy. And our galaxy itself is just one of billions of gala

IS MODERN LIFE, ONE BIG SWINDLE?
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  9-1-2007    2
It seems EVERYTHING in our lives spell SWINDLE. From food, to medical care, charities, housing, religion, anything that affects our existence is somehow wrapped or sprinkled with chicanery. I have always believed, when a buck is to be made we all should display caution. Whether it be the tests doctors send you on or the imports coming in from merciless countries, we should all feel apprehension and not just blindly do what the so called benevolent powers tell us to do. In a profit driven society $$$ reins supreme. But it seems of all the ideologies the human race has come up with, capitalism appears to be the only one that can somewhat work with the (although high) lowest of suffering for the people held to such an ideology. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean we should all turn into sheep, following and doing exactly what we are told, without question. Go into this site http://www.whale.to/ for some incite, gaining a little bit of knowledge so you can stave off being someone's pigeon!

The Myth that Image DPI Is Relevant To Web Images
patchworkthreads

The source site, emdpi.com, seems to be a great site for clearing up common misconceptions about basic graphics terminology and definitions. For example, it also mentions that the "em" is -not- "a square the size of the letter M" (I'd seen that one before), and explains that in Windows, an inch as defined by Microsoft might not be an actual physical inch - and why.

Fear and Loathing in Middle America
schreibe
by schreibe  8-4-2007
More: Lucky for us, Bageant didn't hop on the next plane back west, and didn't chalk it all up to a terrible, misconstrued nostalgia. Instead, he stuck to his guns -- literally -- and tried to understand why people in his part of the country, people he genuinely loves despite his utter detestation of their politics, are so dyed-in-the-wool conservative that it'd take the Apocalypse to prize them away from supporting George W. Bush. "In the days before the spine of the labor movement was crushed, back when you could be a gun owner and a liberal without any conflict, members of the political left supported these workers, stood on the lines taking beatings at the plant gates alongside them," he argues. "Now there is practically no labor movement, and large numbers on the left are comfortably ensconced in the true middle class... From that vantage point, liberals currently view working whites as angry, warmongering bigots, happy pawns of the American empire -- which begs the questions

Haaretz: "Very Deep RACIST Norms, Cloaked in various ways"
righthand
by righthand  8-11-2007
If we have indeed reached "the end of Zionism," it is not because of demography but because of geography and morality. There is no "demographic threat." There is a threat to society's values, which will be determined not by statistics but by the amount of social justice. Talk of a demographic threat is not legitimate. Imagine what would happen if a discussion were held in the US or EU on "the worrisome natural growth of the Jews." And who here would dare consider publicly the "fertility tendencies" of the Mizrahim - Jews of Middle Eastern descent. The racist discourse has become the norm in Israel and the Jewish world at large. It began with the "danger of assimilation" and "mixed marriages" - a supremely racist term - continued with the "danger of Haredization" and ended with the "peril of the Arab majority." Demographers constantly publish forecasts, competing among themselves for the title of chief doomsayer. A putrid stench emanates from the talk about "fertility tendencies,
