POPSat Happy People Don’t Do “We looked at 8 to 10 activities that happy people engage in, and for each one, the people who did the activities more — visiting others, going to church, all those things — were more happy,” Dr. Robinson said. “TV was the one activity that showed a negative relationship. Unhappy people did it more, and happy people did it less.” But the researchers could not tell whether unhappy people watch more television or whether being glued to the set is what makes people unhappy. “I don’t know that turning off the TV will make you more happy,” Dr. Robinson said. Still, he said, the data show that people who spend the most time watching television are least happy in the long run. Since the major predictor of how much time is spent watching television is whether someone works or not, Dr. Robinson added, it’s possible that rising unemployment will lead to more TV time.

POPSMurdoch vows to charge for all online content I shall forgo my comment in favor of anothers, which exactly matches my initial thought upon reading the article. "Great move. for alternative media. That means less traffic to his websites, and more alternative sources. and anyone subscribing can just spread the info as it comes out. why pay for “state approved” news anyway? i cant think of anything more useless."

POPSTV impairs speech development in young children More: It's the seventh study to suggest that TV hurts children's language development, Strasburger says. A March report from Harvard Medical School found that watching TV neither helped nor harmed children's language skills. Though Christakis acknowledges that there is still some debate about whether watching television is harmful, he says there's no evidence to show that it's helpful. That's why the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no TV for babies under age 2. "We need to avoid parking babies in front of screens," Strasburger says. "Parents need to realize they need to be the primary entertainment for their babies. Parents are movie stars when their kids are babies. It doesn't last long."

POPSI'm not sure what @jimmy_wales is talking about here I don't really relate to anything in this statement. I know that Jimmy Wales has accomplished great things on the web, particularly with wikipedia - and i have great respect for that. But this particular statement seems to be the kind of thing you say to an audience that really has no idea and will just agree with whatever you say. For one, a lot of Web 2.0 content is still about silly stuff, who is he kidding. And angry ranting blogs most certainly still persist - and that is a good thing! i hope those angry ranting blogs never go away...they are an important voice in the global conversation. And to say that the quality of the content is equal to magazines and television is just odd. I don't see the content coming out of the social web having any correlation to magazines or television that would justify any comparison, either good or bad...they're just very different.

POPSCalifornia To Ban TV: But Not For Good Reason (like there’s nothing decent to watch) Of course, television sets, just as with dishwashers and refrigerators, are getting more efficient all the time, a process that the free marker excels at on its own - at least it used to, before the age of AIG, bailouts, and executive compensation caps. But, rather than let nature and consumer choice take its course, the CEC must be seen as acting. For bureaucracies that don’t act are soon acted upon by politicians. Unsaid is the fact that, if anything decent were being produced for television, emissions would skyrocket. On this basis NBC should make out like a bandit with a carbon cap-and-trade program since their sole show in the prime-time top-20 Nielsen ratings is rated an energy-saving #20, translating weak viewership into an Earth-friendly virtue, and a few million tons of valuable carbon credits.
