POPSOakland man turns 111, insists it's no big deal
More: Yes, Hatch is a cool dude. Just the nicest, sharpest, spunkiest, friendliest, most capable man you'd ever want to know. Age really has nothing to do with all that, other than to provide him with a vast array of stories to pepper any conversation. Like when he used to go hunting for jack rabbits in the "country" of Castro Valley and Hayward, back before all the freeways and houses and BART. He even hunted bear in Alaska until the time he saw another hunter kill a mama bear with cubs and it broke his heart, so he hung up his shotgun. "That got me right here," he said, touching his chest. He traveled for years as a merchant marine, working on cargo ships all over the world. He taught himself Spanish when he was in Mexico City. He survived an apartment fire in 1971 in West Oakland, though he lost a couple of fingers dangling from a burning window. He worked as a blacksmith, an auto mechanic and a taxi driver, and even drove Jimmy Carter to the Oakland airport one time.

POPSIran Media Reporting Arrest of 3 Americans The official said the account came from a fourth member of their group who was feeling sick and had stayed behind in Sulaimaniyah. The Iranian state TV report claimed the four Americans were together when they crossed the border, but "only one returned , while the three were arrested." The discrepancy could not immediately be reconciled. The area where the three disappeared is a popular hiking destination known for a picturesque waterfall and rocky scenery as well as a thick growth of fruit and nut trees. POPSAP: NYC mayor restricts idling, but his SUVs do it The mayor earlier this year strengthened the city's anti-idling law — which allows three minutes of idling — into what advocates call the nation's toughest and promised a public-awareness campaign. The bill limited idling to one minute in school zones and mandated education for taxi driver applicants. "Those of us that want to leave a good life for our children, and want to have clean air for us to breathe, and clean water to drink ... it's incumbent on us to really carry the fight," he said at the signing. the AP spotted one of his SUVs idling for about 40 minutes during a morning event, and 43 minutes more at City Hall. At a morning event this week, idling lasted more than 30 minutes. The following evening, Bloomberg gave a speech in midtown Manhattan while the vehicles idled for 45 minutes.
