POPSWhy is the "cure" nearly always worse than the cause? I become more concerned with modern medicine in the form of pharmaceuticals daily. They are making rash, profit motivated, decisions and the government falls in line as the tax revenue and lobby gifts/graft is running free. Get healthy, get some sun, eat fresh, local produce and quit feeding the mega-national beasts.

POPSFighting Fraud
To put it into perspective, ACORN received about $53 million of federal funding over the past 15 years. Meanwhile, Blackwater, the private military contractor to which the U.S. government has farmed out security duties, may owe the government as much as $55 million for allegedly failing to fulfill the terms of one of its federal contracts. Yet Blackwater (now known as Xe), a company that has five of its employees facing murder charges in a massacre of Iraqi civilians in 2007, got a $217 million contract from the Obama administration to provide security in Iraq. The former Haliburton subsidiary, KBR, got $80 million in contract bonuses to provide electrical wiring in Iraq -- wiring that has fatally electrocuted 16 soldiers and two contractors. They haven’t been defunded by Congress. According to the nonpartisan Project on Government Oversight, the biggest three defense contractors -- Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Northrop Grumman -- have been cited 109 times for misconduct since 199

POPSShould Inmates Pay Rent ? "If the court determines that sheriffs have the authority " as part of their duties and responsibilities " to institute fees, there are millions of dollars in savings to the taxpayers as a result of inmates paying a very small portion of their fees and services," Assad said. Walker said the majority of inmates are indigent, so the money in their canteen accounts is sent to them by family members so they can buy basic items that are not supplied by the jails. To deduct money from those accounts is like placing an unlawful tax on prisoners' families, she said

POPSThe Home Buyers’ Tax Credit: What You Need to Know To curb fraud, the legislation also requires taxpayers to provide documentation proving that they purchased a home and requires taxpayers to be at least 18 to claim the credit. POPS Washington and the Jobs Market The larger measure of joblessness that includes marginal and part-time workers jumped 0.5% to 17.5%. And the average hours worked in a week stayed the same at 33.0, which means that millions of Americans working part-time will have to become full-time before employers start hiring new workers. If Democrats really want to create jobs and save themselves from a debacle in 2010, their best policy option is to stop creating so much investment uncertainty and additional barriers to business hiring. Stop trying to raise business costs by making it easier to unionize via "card check." Stop trying to raise energy costs with a cap-and-tax bill. Stop adding to the deficit and future tax burden with a 12% increase in domestic spending for 2010. Above all, stop trying to ram through Congress on a partisan vote a health-care bill that imposes a 5.4-percentage-point income tax "surcharge" on anyone making more than $500,000 a year......

POPSPELOSI: Buy a $15,000 Policy or Go to Jail Or you could pay a fine for, you know, being alive. I had joked before about them eventually taxing you for breathing to cut down on CO2 emissions, but I never though they would really tax you for doing nothing more than being alive.

POPSOakland Mayor Ron Dellums needs to explain tax mess or resign More: The debt owed to this city by Dellums is incalculable and there is nothing but pride - or arrogance - standing between him and a full public disclosure of the facts surrounding his tax problem. Anything short of that constitutes unacceptable behavior by a public official and violates the public contract between an elected official and the constituency the office serves. I tried to reach the mayor for comment - but he declined to speak with me, his press secretary Paul Rose told me. No one has asked Dellums to disclose anything that any other politician in the same set of circumstances wouldn't be asked to explain. If he cannot provide a public explanation for a controversy that has become another national embarrassment for this city, it's difficult to see how continuing in his current position is going to be good for anyone - either him or Oakland's citizens.

POPSThe rotten estates England
Everything that is bad about the English system is evidence here. These lazy, greedy perpetrators of perpetual socialism have been protected by the liberal correctness regimes put in place by successive governments. Everything about that statement is wrong, except the facts. The fact that these people are allowed to raise more generations of worthless flesh is as abhorrent to the hard working Briton as the devious and malicious enterprises of the Bankers and their cohorts, the politicians. Absolutely no system has the panacea for all societies’ ills, but this system that relies on the influential few to circumvent the wishes of the people by allowing the ill-educated to proliferate whilst Labour imports their supporters from foreign lands is treason. Get the illiterate masses educated. Once they learn the hard lesson of real education they would have no need to wallow in self pity, smoke their tax free cigarettes and produce off-spring that every tax payer I the land has to subsi

POPSThe EU's New Stealth Tax "But in return Britain would be expected to give up its £4.1billion a year rebate, first agreed by Mrs Thatcher in 1984. Other options being considered include taxes on communications and banks and a carbon tax which would push up the cost of fuel, flights and heating."

POPSCalifornia's Broken Model In what respects, then, does California "excel"? California's state and local government employees were the best compensated in America, according to the Census Bureau data for 2006. And the latest posting on the website of the California Foundation for Fiscal Responsibility shows 9,223 former civil servants and educators receiving pensions worth more than $100,000 a year from California's public retirement funds. The "dues" paid by taxpayers in order to belong to Club California purchase benefits that, increasingly, are enjoyed by the staff instead of the members.

POPSU.S. Offshoring and Multinational Corporations Perhaps the ultimate expression of capitalism results in the export of jobs to lowest-cost countries to enable what used to be “American companies”, now multinational corporations that have the sole goal of maximizing their corporate profits. The ultimate political expression has evolved to a sector of the world that is, in effect, ruled by multinational corporations. What is worse is that these multinationals fail to realize that ultimately they are undercutting their own profits and shrinking their own market by underminding their own profit center in formerly prosperous prime economies. The bonus from offshoring can only last so long and is highly subject to proper application and use within a given multinational corporation. Offshoring is not a cure-all for corporate profits, nor a real solution for long-term benefit to anyone. No government contracts should be given to multinational corporations, ever!

POPSCash for Clubbers The golf-cart boom has followed an IRS ruling that golf carts qualify for the electric-car credit as long as they are also road worthy. These qualifying golf carts are essentially the same as normal golf carts save for adding some safety features, such as side and rearview mirrors and three-point seat belts. They typically can go 15 to 25 miles per hour. In South Carolina, sales of these carts have been soaring as dealerships alert customers to Uncle Sam's giveaway. "The Golf Cart Man" in the Villages of Lady Lake, Florida is running a banner online ad that declares: "GET A FREE GOLF CART. Or make $2,000 doing absolutely nothing!"

POPSPlanned Parenthood Indoctrinates High-Schools I wonder if our tax dollars (via stimulus money) is paying for these new jobs? Perhaps these are the jobs Obama was talking about creating. The text claims they will stress abstinence, but of course the lefties believe abstinence programs don't work, so I doubt there will be much emphasis on that in this indoctrination program.

POPSFraud Could Undermine Housing Tax Credit as Troubling Report Emerges
The Government Accountability Office reports that $10 billion had been spent on 1.4 million credits as of late August. As the economy hit trouble in 2008, Congress passed a $7,500 tax credit for first-time homebuyers as a no-interest, long-term loan to stimulate the housing market. The credit was expanded under the economic recovery act passed in February to $8,000, not as a loan, but a fully refundable credit. Economists worry that the tax break is going to those who would have purchased homes anyway, and filling homes by vacating others " as renters become buyers " without benefit to the economy as a whole. Estimates are that more than three-quarters of the expected 1.5 million taxpayers who will have tapped the program would have bought homes even without the tax credit, putting the price to the government at about $43,000 per homebuyer who would not have bought a house without the credit. The Government Accountability Office reports that 59 percent of those claiming . .

POPSChicago to pay Cash Bounties for Informants on Business Cheats Depending on your stance on tax cheats, this could be good or bad. On the one hand, tax cheats should be made to pay their fair share of the tax burden. But it brings up the issue on what is the ‘fair share’ when it comes to taxes, but that is for discussion another day. On the hand, this enforces the whole Big Brother climate. Do we really want to spy on our grocer or used car dealer, etc? Would you do it for money? What are your thoughts?
