POPSGreat Whites Hang Out in 'Shark Cafe' It had long been assumed shark species at the top of the ocean food chain that roam the high seas looking for food and mates did so almost randomly. But using satellite tagging, acoustic monitoring of shark "hot spots" and genetic samples, a research team led by Professor Barbara Block of Stanford University found to their surprise that the eastern Pacific's great whites are real homebodies. Over an eight year period, nearly 100 sharks were electronically tagged, and even more had tissue samples taken by scientists working from a ship. Sticking to a schedule They found that the sharks consistently migrate along the same paths and stick to a schedule. Between August and December, the great whites, which can grow up to six metres and weigh three tonnes, stalk waters off the coast of central and northern California, feasting on seals and sea lions. Their preferred hunting grounds in this area are known as the "red triangle", notes the study.

POPSClipmarks and the Art of Highlighting Clipper {{JICWyllie}} published this piece in Inside Knowledge magazine. His insight regarding annotation and classification is fascinating. And it's inspiring to read about the potential of Clipmarks as a tool for group intelligence -- World Mind here we come! Thanks Jan!

POPSBrave New World It's coming! Just keep an eye on Great Britain as the government seeks to watch, listen and be in all people's everyday existence. This country is at the forefront of abolishing personal liberties. Their CCTV system is unparalleled in the world as one would think this would be the Soviet Union during the Cold War. GB and other EU countries are in the process tagging citizen's cars with GPS for tracking purposes, hiding behind the umbrella of using this acquired data as a means to tax driver's mileage. The U.S. is kicking this idea around even now.

POPSTagging is huge! This is one of (if not the) best paragraphs about the importance of tagging that i've read. Check out the rest of the post by clicking the source link. It's an excellent post on the overall importance of "making sense out of it all."

Clay Shirky highlights a difference between a tagging approach and a metadata approach. Metadata on Amazon is contributed by publishers and Amazon themselves - and it seems that it is rather inconsistent, with some editions of books falling into the 'Gay', 'Erotica' types of classification whilst other editions of the same book don't. Customers can tag products with words of thei own choosing. Amazon appears to have decided to remove some classifications, based on the metadata, from their sales ranking mechanism. An email they sent to Mark Probst suggested that this was a policy decision to protect their customer base. Classifications which have been affected include feminist literature, classics, LGBT literature and books on sex and disability. Amazon have apparently subsequently said that this is due to a glitch - a story people on Twitter are not believing. So, Amazon has a problem - de-ranking products based on their classification system is causing annoyance (to put it

POPSDeweyMusic "I understand that sifting through that many artists is a bit daunting if you don't know what you're looking for. I've added Genre tags that are pulled from Last.fm to help you find your style, and a search function to help you find exactly what you want. While I look into better options, and as the database grows, let me suggest that you use the "Concerts From Today" tab to narrow down your listening possibilities while browsing. I hope to be adding rating, tagging and commenting functionality soon."

POPS Art Encounters Life The graffiti artist who rocketed to fame with an iconic portrait of President Obama was released yesterday after spending a night in jail when he ran afoul of Hub cops unimpressed by his media blitz. Frank Shepard Fairey, 38, of Los Angeles was arrested Friday night for tagging a Massachusetts Turnpike building, police said. “Given his popularity, the suspect, prior to his exhibit, was interviewed by various media outlets in Boston and on a nationwide scale,” a police report states. “In several of these interviews, suspect spoke openly about illegally tagging. Suspect further acknowledged or admitted to recent tagging in Boston.” the Institute of Contemporary Art - has stoked his counter cultural image while making the media rounds, noting he has been arrested more than a dozen times.

POPSNew RFID Technology Allows You to be Tracked WITHOUT Your Knowledge One of the more covert technologies they employ is ID-Dust, serialized dust particles that can be interrogated like a RFID tag. The NOX team can coat a person or object with it to track movement. ID-Dust can show if an item was handled or it can even be sprinkled on the floor. People unknowingly pick up the ID-Dust on their shoes as they travel through a dusted area. The software combines the video surveillance and RFID information to create an association between the ID-Dust and a person. The ID-Dust allows the person's movement to be tracked around a facility without the person ever knowing he or she is being tracked. While a criminal can easily defeat the motion sensors, the ID-Dust provides covert security with instant alerts when someone enters an area, plus a complete history of exactly where each person traveled and when.

POPSWarning: Bloody Photos from your Bloody Hands and Bloody Bombs Why must images of dead Gazians not be seen? Because the blood is on Americans hands? Or only those hands of the 49%+ that voted for Bush? Whose sensibilities are we offending by covering up the truth? Does playing this game of hide and seek increase the odds of more or less dead Palestinian children? Where is the land of freedom and liberty gone? Did it ever exist or was it just another Hollywood myth? What nation flies American youths to the Middle East for weapons training with live ammunition so that someday they may serve in the IDF and not their native American services? Is this unwillingness to serve in the American forces the reason for the doubts about their loyalty to the USA? That and their spying on an 'ally' while murdering US servicemen in 1967! Will ClipMarks collaborate in the genocide of Gazians by tagging these photos 'Mature'?

POPSWe know where you live Actually, we are all already tagged. ID cards, license plates, IP number for each Internet device. Tattoo number on a wrist... O, no, this is for some of us. National database records. Now they already developing pills with chemically storing information inside our bodies. O, yes, ship under skin is for cattle, you are absolutely right, it's disgusting. You are rebel and don't want to go thru the gate? Go in that long line, please.

POPSSun May Be Galactic Hitchhiker... Stars could travel from deep within the interior of a galaxy to its outer edges, and might even get passed around in a "spiral arm relay," Roskar told SPACE.com. Our sun currently has an orbit near the outer edge of the galaxy. New simulation runs confirmed earlier work that showed how star orbits can remain circular despite expanding or shrinking. That counters assumptions that the gravitational tug-of-war would push and pull orbits into wilder elliptical shapes.

POPSInvention: Self-replicating materials Experiments on colloids have proved that self-replication is possible, they say. By tagging colloid particles with a range of DNA coatings that fluoresce at different wavelengths, they were able to see how a mixture gradually turned into a collection of ordered lines of particles after a self-replicating "seed" structure was added." This ir really a potential breakthrough! slowly science fiction looses its fiction part :)

POPSFarmers group objects to livestock tagging on religious grounds The suit (.pdf) mentions various verses from the Book of Revelation. "He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name."
