POPSBrave New World It's coming! Just keep an eye on Great Britain as the government seeks to watch, listen and be in all people's everyday existence. This country is at the forefront of abolishing personal liberties. Their CCTV system is unparalleled in the world as one would think this would be the Soviet Union during the Cold War. GB and other EU countries are in the process tagging citizen's cars with GPS for tracking purposes, hiding behind the umbrella of using this acquired data as a means to tax driver's mileage. The U.S. is kicking this idea around even now.

POPSCensus GPS-tagging your home's front door Obama administration announced its oversight of the census, "literally taking control of the census away from the Commerce Department." He put that together with Obama's longtime push for national service. I ask again, what would be the purpose of shooting the GPS coordinates of American doorways?" he wrote. The answer he provided was alarming. "Imagine, if you will, that there are a number of people in a neighborhood that could not find the addresses they are tasked with finding. They are not locals, maybe are unable to read a map, or perhaps do not have the time to pull out a map, and they need to find you with specific GPS coordinates. Their devices would lead them to your front door with these coordinates. Imagine a crisis is afoot, and martial law is put into place. U.S. troops need to round up particular folks," he wrote.

Clay Shirky highlights a difference between a tagging approach and a metadata approach. Metadata on Amazon is contributed by publishers and Amazon themselves - and it seems that it is rather inconsistent, with some editions of books falling into the 'Gay', 'Erotica' types of classification whilst other editions of the same book don't. Customers can tag products with words of thei own choosing. Amazon appears to have decided to remove some classifications, based on the metadata, from their sales ranking mechanism. An email they sent to Mark Probst suggested that this was a policy decision to protect their customer base. Classifications which have been affected include feminist literature, classics, LGBT literature and books on sex and disability. Amazon have apparently subsequently said that this is due to a glitch - a story people on Twitter are not believing. So, Amazon has a problem - de-ranking products based on their classification system is causing annoyance (to put it

POPSDeweyMusic "I understand that sifting through that many artists is a bit daunting if you don't know what you're looking for. I've added Genre tags that are pulled from Last.fm to help you find your style, and a search function to help you find exactly what you want. While I look into better options, and as the database grows, let me suggest that you use the "Concerts From Today" tab to narrow down your listening possibilities while browsing. I hope to be adding rating, tagging and commenting functionality soon."

POPS Art Encounters Life The graffiti artist who rocketed to fame with an iconic portrait of President Obama was released yesterday after spending a night in jail when he ran afoul of Hub cops unimpressed by his media blitz. Frank Shepard Fairey, 38, of Los Angeles was arrested Friday night for tagging a Massachusetts Turnpike building, police said. “Given his popularity, the suspect, prior to his exhibit, was interviewed by various media outlets in Boston and on a nationwide scale,” a police report states. “In several of these interviews, suspect spoke openly about illegally tagging. Suspect further acknowledged or admitted to recent tagging in Boston.” the Institute of Contemporary Art - has stoked his counter cultural image while making the media rounds, noting he has been arrested more than a dozen times.

POPSNew RFID Technology Allows You to be Tracked WITHOUT Your Knowledge One of the more covert technologies they employ is ID-Dust, serialized dust particles that can be interrogated like a RFID tag. The NOX team can coat a person or object with it to track movement. ID-Dust can show if an item was handled or it can even be sprinkled on the floor. People unknowingly pick up the ID-Dust on their shoes as they travel through a dusted area. The software combines the video surveillance and RFID information to create an association between the ID-Dust and a person. The ID-Dust allows the person's movement to be tracked around a facility without the person ever knowing he or she is being tracked. While a criminal can easily defeat the motion sensors, the ID-Dust provides covert security with instant alerts when someone enters an area, plus a complete history of exactly where each person traveled and when.

POPSSocial Software- web2.0 Contributes to...
thinking towards the web empowering people in real ways, to make real world changes, that were otherwise impossible. using social networking sites for more than simple games, like relationship-building tools for people unable to leave their homes, and map tagging that creates real-time records of abandoned properties, vandalism, etc., giving people in poverty a tool to manage their collective knowledge of the neighborhoods in which they live.-- What I wouldn't give for a web-based interface that would allow members of my community to tag a City of Buffalo / erie county parcel-overlay with pertinent information, such as ...kids coming in and out of vacant property at 300 Potomac Pky @ date and time OR demolition starting at the old house on Main Street cermaic tile being thrown out OR aspestos left uncovered in North Buffalo residential district for 1 week with link to pics and more information about the harmful effects of aspestos OR , OR, AND, AND --it will be beautiful!

POPSWarning: Bloody Photos from your Bloody Hands and Bloody Bombs Why must images of dead Gazians not be seen? Because the blood is on Americans hands? Or only those hands of the 49%+ that voted for Bush? Whose sensibilities are we offending by covering up the truth? Does playing this game of hide and seek increase the odds of more or less dead Palestinian children? Where is the land of freedom and liberty gone? Did it ever exist or was it just another Hollywood myth? What nation flies American youths to the Middle East for weapons training with live ammunition so that someday they may serve in the IDF and not their native American services? Is this unwillingness to serve in the American forces the reason for the doubts about their loyalty to the USA? That and their spying on an 'ally' while murdering US servicemen in 1967! Will ClipMarks collaborate in the genocide of Gazians by tagging these photos 'Mature'?
