Learning How Not To Be Afraid
balthazarus
by balthazarus  Yesterday 10:35 AM
When Kandel's team used radiation to blunt the birth of new cells in the dentate gyrus, they discovered that their interventions both slowed safety learning and stunted the antidepressant effects of learned safety. Another study that points to the origin of fear as a biological entity. the glitch is it turning into anxiety.

Female Fighters: We Won't Stand for Male Dominance
dulios
by dulios  10-7-2008    1
Back in 1998, the fighters say, their now-jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan declared the group "a women's party." It was initially difficult to accept, says Karim, a 42-year-old male member of the PKK. Today, the PKK's ideology revolves around a belief that global crises and injustice are a result of millennia of male-dominated rule. Here, the women run their own assaults and have their own command structure. All tasks are shared, both on and off the battlefield. Discipline is paramount to survival, they say, and weapons are always clean and never out of reach.

"People have found other ways to be cooperative – without God."
balthazarus
by balthazarus  10-4-2008
The study also points out that in today's world religion has no monopoly on kind and generous behaviour. In many findings, non-believers acted as prosocially as believers. The last several hundred years has seen the rise of non-religious institutional mechanisms that include effective policing, courts and social surveillance. Very interesting read, on the social function of god. maybe we can say that JC, Moses and the like are history social workers :)

Don't Stress! Bacterial Cell's 'Crisis Command Center' Revealed
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-5-2008    1
If a bacteria cell finds itself in a dangerous situation - for example, if the temperature or saltiness of the bacteria's environment reach dangerous levels which threaten the survival of the bacteria -a warning signal from the cell's surface is transmitted into the cell. Using cutting edge electron microscopy imaging techniques the authors of the new research observed that the stressosomes receive this warning signal, and in response several proteins called RSBT break away from the large stressosome. This breakaway triggers a cascade of signals within the cell which results in over 150 proteins being produced - proteins which enable the cell to adapt, react and survive in its new environment.

Questioning Someone Else's Debt
dmegivern
by dmegivern  10-1-2008    8
I almost wish dulios had not told me about the snarky comments on Clipmarks related to my indebtedness. It's called student loans. Since when are they supposed to be embarrassing? Just because my parents could not pay for me to go to college, I am supposed to be ashamed? And of course, without child support or any contributions, I raised my two youngest siblings for seven years. Sometimes I had to borrow more money in student loans to support them. I was 25 and in graduate school with custody of my 13 year old sister, and the next year getting custody of my 12 year old brother. Where else was I supposed to get money? My story is in the clipped book as Chapter 7.

Has Sarah Palin Been Picked as the Titular Head of the Coming Police State?
papananook
by papananook  9-27-2008    8
Reports confirmed my suspicions: Palin, not McCain, is the FrankenBarbie of the Rove-Cheney cabal. The strategy became clear. Time magazine reported that Rove is "dialed in" to the McCain campaign. Rove's protege Steve Schmidt is now campaign manager. And Politico reported that Rove was heavily involved in McCain's vice presidential selection. Finally a new report shows that there are dozens of Bush and Rove operatives surrounding Sarah Palin and orchestrating her every move. What's the plan? It is this. McCain doesn't matter. Reputable dermatologists are discussing the fact that in simply actuarial terms, John McCain has a virulent and life-threatening form of skin cancer. It is the elephant in the room, but we must discuss the health of the candidates: doctors put survival rates for someone his age at two to four years. I believe the Rove-Cheney cabal is using Sarah Palin as a stalking horse, an Evita figure, to put a popular, populist face on the coming police state and be the ta

Rice Admits Admin. Involved in Torture Discussions
Wisco
by Wisco  9-26-2008    1
The piece goes on to quote Rachel Maddow: MSNBC's Rachel Maddow called the release of Rice's statement "a soul of the nation story," noting that torture violates the Geneva Conventions and is a criminal act under the US War Crimes Act of 1996. She emphasized that "we just can't get this issue behind us," even with the Bush administration on its way out of office, because "issues like this, like torture, still define who we are as a country. It's still unfinished business." Before some right wing dumbass comes along and says "this isn't torture," let me make two points. 1) you do it and see how you feel afterward, 2) that's not a decision that the administration gets to make. That's for courts to decide. Right now, it looks like a war crime. Mostly because it is.

Once Endangered, Now Recovering
balthazarus
by balthazarus  9-23-2008
hunters were taking the canary-yellow young langurs from their cliff-face strongholds, and villagers were leveling the forest for firewood. Dr. Pan quickly hired wardens to protect the remaining animals but then went a step further, taking on the larger social and economic factors jeopardizing the species. Dr. Pan recognized the animal’s origin myth as legend, but he also believed that alleviating the region’s continuing poverty was essential for their long-term survival. In the 24-square-kilometer nature reserve where he has focused his studies, the langur population increased to more than 500 today from 96 in 1996.

Fossils tell of mass exodus from sea
pokkets

Creatures could develop some protection from the sun in the water, but the land was wide open, and predators were yet to get anywhere the efficiency of ocean based predators. They can understand why shelled arthropods had the protection to survive, but can't understand the survival of soft bodied things like worms and Molluscs? then perhaps they can explain why a slug like creature evolved a shell and branched unto the Snail genotype. i don't imagine life is safe anywhere for exposed slugs and worms, and solar radiation, particularly UV Light can accelerate development. and change. Perhaps they were moving to the place that was the least dangerous.

From the rat to the moon, all about numbers
balthazarus
by balthazarus  9-16-2008    3
“What’s interesting and surprising in our results is that the same system we spend years trying to acquire in school, and that we use to send a man to the moon, and that has inspired the likes of Plato, Einstein and Stephen Hawking, has something in common with what a rat is doing when it’s out hunting for food,” he said. “I find that deeply moving.” Behind every great leap of our computational mind lies the pitter-patter of rats’ feet, the little squeak of rodent kind."

Alaska Chooses Largest Gold Mine Over Clean Water
papananook
by papananook  9-6-2008
Suggest you read it all--Sarah Palin supported this minin project--ooops, there go the Salmon in that area...some more info on the "Independent" Alaskan voters: But on Aug. 26, Alaskans voted down a ballot measure that proponents had cast as crucial to the future survival of Bristol Bay salmon. Ballot measure 4, which survived a challenge that went all the way to the state Supreme Court to remain on the state's primary ballot, would have prohibited large metal mines from contaminating salmon streams and drinking water sources. Though by law the ballot measure couldn't name a specific project, everyone knew it was aimed at the proposed Pebble Mine, which if developed as planned would be North America's largest open pit gold mine, also mining copper and molybdenum (a crucial element in steel).

I honestly find the whole situation too confusing to have any conviction about one way or the other. But to see Bear Sterns, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Lehman Brothers all basically get wiped out tells suggests that survival is now the number one priority. Greed...it's an essential part of our system, but it sure does hurt when it goes to extremes.
