POPSNew Species of Cockroach Found In New York by 2 High School Students
"In their roles as "DNAHouse investigators," the pair trawled New York apartments, stores and street, collecting 217 specimens between November 2008 and March 2009. They took samples from supermarket food, the remains of an insect found in a box of fruit, a feather from a duster, dried dung and a cockroach and matched DNA sequences using the Barcode of Life Database and GenBank. The American Museum of Natural History laboratory identified 170 genetic codes, leading the researchers to identify 95 different animal species, including some that were unexpected. "A feather from a duster yielded ostrich DNA. A delicacy labeled 'sturgeon caviar' instead turned out to be from the strange-looking paddlefish. A popular Asian snack was revealed as giant flying squid. Bison DNA was found in a dog biscuit," the pair wrote on the Rockefeller University website. In fact, they found that 16 percent of food items were mislabeled, including cheeses labeled sheep's milk that were actually ma

POPSMissouri farmers arrested for selling milk The above description is a dramatization of real events that happened recently in Springfield, Missouri, where the state has decided to spend considerable taxpayer resources running a sting operating against a family that was caught dealing -- gulp! -- raw milk in a parking lot. Yeah... because that plastic-wrapped, industrial-factory-produced food that shows up on the supermarket shelves is SOOO much better.

POPSFed rule halts red snapper fishing Oh well. How many jobs is this going to cut? I know....they'll hire the fishermen to be Federal officers patrolling the seas to catch those fish-violators. And can you imagine the price of one that makes it to the restaurant or supermarket? Will this help the fishing economy on the Left Coast? Wish the Feds would do something about the Chinese sucking oil from under our waters via Cuba.

POPSAbout smoked paprika Click through for the list of suggested uses. More: The color is a striking deep red that spreads through any dish to which it is added. It has an intoxicating smoky aroma from the slow oak smoking, and a silky texture from the repeated grinding between stones. We like to add it to our spice rub or barbecue sauce for baby back ribs, or as an accent for roast potatoes or as a flavoring for potatoes and fish dishes, all things with shrimp, light stews, sauces, garlic chicken and roasted meats.

POPSA couple of "SHUT THE FUCK UP"s for your Thanksgiving morning CONTINUED: Did you slaughter the turkey, cut it's throat and let it go from living animal to dead animal in front of you, drain it of blood, scoop out the shit and entrails from it's carcass, and yank all the feathers from it's dead skin? Or did you just turn on your gas-burning cage, drive to the supermarket, and pick up a plastic-wrapped ball of meat-&-bone without a face or feet? Shut the fuck up about the mela. Your hypocrisy sickens me. Enjoy your dinner. But shut the fuck up while you do it.

Later varieties include Rome, Fuji, Granny Smith, and Jonathan. Romes are a deep red and are slightly sweet. Fuji’s range in color from gold to red and often have red striping, and are great for snacking. Granny Smith apples are green, tart apples that are perfect for baking. Jonathans have light red stripes over deep red or yellow and are slightly tart. For a quick and easy simmered fall punch, combine 2 cups apple juice, 1/2 cup orange juice, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon, and 2 or 3 cloves. Simmer on the stove for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove cloves before serving. ---------------------------

POPSThe way the brain buys Scientists used to assume that emotion and rationality were opposed to each other, but Antonio Damasio, now professor of neuroscience at the University of Southern California, has found that people who lose the ability to perceive or experience emotions as the result of a brain injury find it hard or impossible to make any decisions at all. They can’t shop. ergo we shop with our hearts..;-)

POPSDeceptive Techniques of Food Labels, What You Read is NOT What You Get!
The FDA website shares some tips on how to understand and use the Nutrition Facts Label http://www.fda.gov/Food/LabelingNutrition/ConsumerInformation/ucm078889.htm Have you ever really looked at what is considered a ‘serving size’? I laughed when I first started seeing this on packages. I had been eating more than one serving size pretty much my whole life, and still do. I think most of us do. The problem I have with eating right is knowing whether or not I’m getting the right amount of nutrients necessary for optimum health and a strong immune system. Most doctors will tell you that you can obtain all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients you need from a normal healthy diet. It would be good if this was the case but because of the degradation of the food supply it has become almost impossible to achieve a diet for optimal health and the prevention of degenerative disease. I guess this is why the nutritional supplement market is so wide open.

POPSCorrect, ignore the lies ‘News judgment’ is what has been sorely missing. There used to be a wider gap between media publications that are derisively referred to as ‘supermarket rags’ and legitimate media. The danger in the “he said, she said” formula of reporting is that lies get undeserved media attention. When a lie gets printed it takes on a sort of legitimacy that manipulators have learned to use to their advantage. Journalists have a hefty responsibility to the general public to not allow lies to gain legitimacy and also to their profession to maintain a high ethical standard in presenting honest, truthful news. Readers must share equally the responsibility of debunking lies. Critical, informed thinking is the only way this nation is going to move forward in debating issues that matter most to us. Reality can sometimes be ugly and distasteful, but we need to see it with clarity if we are to turn it into something positive.

POPSWhole Foods: Health Care Reform Casualty? I've learned from the article comments that some people have known for a long time that John Mackey is anti-union. This comment is about those informed liberals. These informed, educated and/or moneyed liberals were content to purchase Chevre and Vouvray stocked by non-union labor. No righteous indignation stirred as their purchases were tallied by a non-union cashier. They glowed with self-satisfaction as they handed their designer grocery bag to a part-time-no-benefits grocery bagger. Halo firmly in place, they floated to the automatic doors assured of their superior position over Safeway shoppers who use plastic bags and eat processed foods. But now comes John Mackey's opinion which shattered their gourmet utopia and laid open their hypocrisy. Oh, they're furious now.

POPSVeggans Beware The Minister of the CP went on to say that "everything that looks like a fruit or vegetable, is not always edible". OK. Then he said, "No one should eat plants or parts of plants that have an unusual taste". Hmmm.....Well that leaves out about ½ of my salads.
