Two women sentenced to 20 lashes for 'indecently' wearing trousers in Sudan
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-25-2009    1
Hussein was arrested by Sudan's public order police at a Khartoum party in July with 12 other women, 10 of whom pleaded guilty to similar charges and were flogged, she has said. Hussein was jailed in September after refusing to pay a fine for the same offence but released after a day in prison after the country's journalists' union came up with the payment.

MSF operates independently of any political, military, or religious agendas. Medical teams conduct evaluations on the ground to determine a population's medical needs before opening programs. The key to MSF’s ability to act independently in response to a crisis is its independent funding. Eighty-nine percent of MSF's overall funding (and 100 percent of MSF-USA's funding) comes from private sources, not governments. In 2006, MSF had more than three million individual donors and private funders worldwide. MSF is neutral. The organization does not take sides in armed conflicts, provides care on the basis of need alone, and pushes for increased independent access to victims of conflict as required under international humanitarian law. At times, MSF may speak out publicly in an effort to bring a forgotten crisis to public attention, to alert the public to abuses occurring beyond the headlines, or to challenge the diversion of humanitarian aid for political interests.

Growing Up Bin Laden
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  10-11-2009    1
Wife and son bare secrets of terror kingpin (married to a monster). Najwa says Americans were kind and friendly, but the country was not to her conservative tastes. Pets met horrible ends. A monkey the children loved was run over by one of Osama's men. She watched the television in horror as the Twin Towers fell, claiming the lives of 2,991 people. Najwa says she has not spoken to Osama since the attacks. And this is the kind of animal species, the pals of Obama that exist at Gitmo, yet liberals defend this trash. Incredible. Just revolting.

which of them is more unreal. To be sure, Colonel Qaddafi peddled his thoughts on the laboratory origins of “swine flu” and the Zionist plot behind the Kennedy assassination. But, on the other hand, President Obama said: “No nation can or should try to dominate another nation.” Pardon me? Did a professional speechwriter write that? Or did you outsource it to a starry-eyed runner-up in the Miss America pageant? Whether or not any nation “should try” to dominate another, they certainly “can,” and do so with effortless ease, all over the planet and throughout human history. And how about this passage? “I have been in office for just nine months " though some days it seems a lot longer. I am well aware of the expectations that accompany my presidency around the world. These expectations are not about me. Rather, they are rooted, I believe, in a discontent with a status quo that has allowed us to be increasingly defined by our differences . . . ”

The Other Ongoing World Shame: Darfur

As the author indicates, when you have lots of "show," there is often very little "go." Take away all the glitter and false starts and Darfur is still one of the leading killing grounds in the world. Is Sudan's oil worth that much?

A fine but no lash for Sudan woman who wore pants
Aribeth
by Aribeth  9-7-2009    5
“The flogging, yes, it causes pain,” Mrs. Hussein, who is Sudanese, said. “But more important, it is an insult. This is why I want to change the law.” The last time Sudan’s courts handled a case that attracted such international attention, they found a compromise solution. A British schoolteacher had faced up to 40 lashes and six months in prison for allowing her students to name a class teddy bear Muhammad, which was perceived as an insult to Islam. But after being sentenced to 15 days in jail, she was soon pardoned by the Sudanese president.

The World of Paranoia Is In Our Faces Everyday & We Think It Is Protection
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  9-14-2009    1
Just tonight one of the people who attend my classes spoke about how Mercurochrome is now banded in Australia - because it is deemed to be too dangerous due to the mercury and yet, I know people who are now well into their nineties and besides a bit of physical frailty are bright, sprightly and healthy. There is a point, where caution simply just turns to paranoia - I really reckon the world is much tooooo paranoid about all the things that can go wrong and hence we inhibit, not just our own, but everyone else's freedom in the process. We are all going to die and whilst I choose to create optimum wellness at any given moment in time. I really can no longer be bothered with filling my head with all the things that can go wrong because of all the rules, regulations, stories (fact or fiction) that fill my head on a daily basis. My life IS - short or long it matters not - less intellect more heart - it is as beautiful as this little video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZE-ML-B

Warning - you may not want to read this since it is about racial bias and elitism's effects in America. Four years ago Katrina laid bare the depth of racism and elitism in not just New Orleans, Louisiana but in the USA. Reminds me of why we tolerate genocide in the Sudan, high crime and homicide rates in predominately Black-American neighborhoods, and very high infante mortality in the Black and or poor America.

Sudan postpones 'trousers' trial

Some wonderful moves coming from Africa. First the sex strike in Kenya, now the question of who has the right to wear the pants. Maybe they are hearing of the suffering families who have to ban men from their villages and have everyone inside and safe before the sun sets, lest the fighters kidnap the boys.

Happening now: Police are beating women opposing Sudan dress code outside trial of Lubna
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  8-4-2009    2
This is awful. Protesters are being beaten and gassed. "I am not afraid of flogging. ... It's not about flogging. It's not about my innocence. It's about changing the law," Hussein said, speaking to The Associated Press after the hearing Tuesday. She said she would take the issue all the way to Sudan's constitutional court if necessary, but that if the court rules against her and orders the flogging, she was ready "to receive (even) 40,000 lashes." Hussein wore the same clothes Tuesday she wore when arrested, including the dark-colored pants that authorities found offensive. Although she was required to wear the same outfit to court so the judge and others could see the clothing, Hussein said she's been wearing it every day to highlight her case.
