We Must Be On Guard For Extremism
debbyski
by debbyski  Yesterday 10:38 AM
"When dealing with soldiers far from their homes and families and subject to the greatest imaginable stress, the Army needs to be on the watch for the predatory inroads of any form of political or religious extremism -- whether it be the jihadism to which Hasan was drawn or the Christian identity nonsense that inspired Timothy McVeigh."

We Need To Do Better For Our Military
sahara
by sahara  11-10-2009
Much of the study focused on 4th Brigade, home unit to most of the violent crime suspects. 4th Brigade was compared head-to-head with 3rd Brigade, which recently returned from Iraq. The 4th Brigade, now in Afghanistan, has suffered a higher casualty rate than other units its size in two deployments, the Army found, losing lives at a rate more than eight times that of 3rd Brigade. Along with the deaths came intense combat that took a mental toll on troops, the Army found. Soldiers in 4th Brigade were more likely than other soldiers to suffer mental illness. The study also found, though, that soldiers feel their careers can be damaged by seeking mental health help and too often feel that enlisted leaders don't support troops with mental illness. Fort Hood Suspect Said His Goodbyes Before Rampage
merrie
by merrie  11-6-2009    1
The rampage unfolded at a center where some 300 unarmed soldiers were lined up for vaccines and eye tests. Soldiers reported that the gunman shouted "Allahu Akbar!" " an Arabic phrase for "God is great!" " before opening fire Thursday, said Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, the base commander. He said officials had not confirmed Hasan made the comment. Hasan was due to be deployed to Afghanistan to help soldiers with combat stress, a task he'd done stateside with returning soldiers, the Army said. In any event, the major was saying goodbyes and dispensing belongings to neighbors. Jose Padilla, the owner of Hasan's apartment complex, said Hasan gave him notice two weeks ago that he was moving out this week. Earlier this week, Hasan asked Padilla his native language. When Padilla said it was Spanish, Hasan immediately went up to his apartment to get him a Spanish-language Quran. Padilla said Hasan also refused to reclaim his deposit and last month's rent.....

Dots, Not Connected
merrie
by merrie  11-6-2009    5
Well, you don’t get to not go just because you don’t want to. Apparently was disturbed by what he was hearing from the combat-traumatized solders he was counseling. Very sensitive, couldn’t hang with the war wounds. Had poor performance reports and was himself in counseling. Sounds a bit like the psychiatrist, not simply unwilling and ill-suited to the military career he had chosen, might have been morphing into patient, or should have been, as he found himself increasingly conflicted at the intersection of various aspects of his life, which appears to have included a respectable level of stress and some potentially extreme contradictions. Given that he worked at the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress, that part of it starts to sound like a very big dot that shouldn’t have needed that much connecting. Here’s another one, dot-connection in process. Had been the focus of some level of attention by federal agents for at least six months....

The Obama Work-Out
merrie
by merrie  11-3-2009
War-weary Obama manages a decision … more golf! Boston Herald: WASHINGTON - President Obama has outperformed former President George Bush in a key area - he’s hit the links as many times in nine months as Bush did in nearly three years, political Web sites reported. Politico, a political news and gossip site, and the Chicago Tribune’s The Swamp, reported that CBS’ Mark Knoller - who documents presidential statistics - Tweeted Sunday, “Today - Obama ties Pres. Bush in the number of rounds of golf played in office: 24. Took Bush 2 yrs & 10 months.” The Swamp noted that after the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Bush quit golf, saying, “I don’t want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander-in-chief playing golf . . . I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal . . . ” Come on, guys. Iraq was different. That was Bush’s war. Afghanistan? That’s Bush’s other war! http://www.julescrittenden.com/2009/10/27/golf-for-we-not-for-thee/

When that word is mentioned, cancer, it’s like a tremble through the heart. I can't stress how important it is for early diagnosis. If there is anything going on in your body - ANYTHING - that is unusual - go get checked. "If only women paid as much attention to their breast as men do..." Sounds funny, but it's true.

If you haven't turned them back already, then don't forget to turn your clocks back. "Spring ahead and fall back," as the old saying goes. But, don't be surprised if you find yourself feeling just a little bit "dis-combobulated" today as a result of the time change. Personally, I have always experienced some difficulties when it is time to change the clocks. Apparently, I am not the only one. According to sleep researchers, many people experience disruption in their sleep patterns. Below, you will find some recommendations for how to minimize sleep disruptions and make sure you get sufficient sleep to keep on amplifying, clipping, clicking, tweeting, and blogging.

America a Rude Nation? Debating Public Decency
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  10-30-2009    11
Experts point to a variety of reasons for the apparent fall in civil standards: 1) The recession has placed many under heavy stress 2) The rise of the internet has fostered confrontational and provocative communications in which people get used to saying things they may never once have dared to utter face-to-face. These may be conditions that allow rudeness to rear its ugly head, but they are not excuses for it. Rudeness is rooted in lack of civility. If you don’t respect other people’s ideas, opinions, equality as compared to yourself, or simply their right to exist, it will be easy for you to resort to rudeness towards that person and you will be considered uncivil. We have been losing our civility for a long time now and I believe it is due to a lack of respect for others and ourselves.

I wonder if our tax dollars (via stimulus money) is paying for these new jobs? Perhaps these are the jobs Obama was talking about creating. The text claims they will stress abstinence, but of course the lefties believe abstinence programs don't work, so I doubt there will be much emphasis on that in this indoctrination program.
