POPSChina’s Asset Bubble It is a matter of time. What will it mean to the Chinese Government? Will it buckle under the weight of massive dissatisfaction? Or will it mean some dark years for the Chinese people? What will it mean to the US Dollar? Will China unload the dollar thus massively devaluing the currency in order to keep their economy afloat? But would they if they are so dependent on foreign trade? And what will it mean to the world economy. Will the world economy be firm enough to absorb Chinese economic contraction? So far, China's economy has been one of the few bright spots. If the world economy is not strong enough China's asset bubble burst may lead to another global recession.

POPSWhen Liberal Dreams Collide With Public Opinion
"What's really exceptional at this stage of Obama's presidency," writes Andrew Kohut, the Pew Research Center's respected pollster, "is the extent to which the public has moved in a conservative direction on a range of issues. These trends have emanated as much from the middle of the electorate as from the highly energized conservative right. From which we can draw two conclusions. One is that economic distress does not move Americans to support more government. Rasmussen reports that 66 percent of Americans favor smaller government with fewer services and only 22 percent favor more services and higher taxes. The second is that Barack Obama's persuasive powers are surprisingly weak. His advocacy seems to have moved Americans in the opposite of the intended direction. Obama first came to national attention in 2004 by promising to heal partisan, ideological and racial divisions. Like the other two Democratic presidents elected in the last 40 years .....

POPSLearn to Rescue Yourselves I'd liked to have seen FEMA issue a release like this before hurricane season. We still want to believe a magical white stallion will rescue us no matter how little we do to help ourselves. FTA: "“Within 72 to 98 hours from the time of impact of a disaster, you only have each other to depend on for help,” Cruz told The STAR in an interview. “People are so reliant on (hotlines like) 911, thinking it’s (rescue) going to happen (soon). The fact is it’s not,” he added.

POPSDigging Out The storm prompted our Governor to declare a state of emergency in West Virginia on Saturday. I was on the road with a crew from 9 to 5 in charge of snow removal and one of my clients actually measured the snow for me--20 inches worth of it. The interchanges were horrible at one point with abandoned cars and trucks everywhere.

POPSWeather Chaos in Europe and North America Snowstorm strikes US East Coast ~ Five dead as snowstorm engulfs US East Coast A winter storm is gripping the eastern US, dumping up to 16in (40cm) of snow in some areas, snarling up travel and cutting power supplies. Incidents thought to be storm-related claimed five lives and forecasters warned of 35mph (56km/h) winds in what may be the worst snowstorm in a decade. The 16in which fell at Reagan National Airport outside Washington was the most ever recorded on a single December day. The storm system is moving north toward New York and Boston. Parts of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts could see more than 16in by Sunday night while as many as 10in may land on New York City, forecasters said. http://bit.ly/55xEag Emergency teams are trying to restore power to thousands of homes in the south of France after the worst blizzard conditions in two decades. POPSWhy Britain faces a bleak future of food shortages It's a hard truth to face. Without the food, the population will not continue to grow. As babies starve, then people will have fewer of them, and the population will decline. As for the science having another green revolution up its sleeve, it is in way over its head. GM has proved very disappointing when it come to increasing yields.

POPSThe Obama Recovery In Full Effect: Deficits Running 25% Higher Than Highest Estimates If the deficits continue to overshoot prior estimates, which they almost certainly will, the country is headed for total, hyper-inflationary meltdown: China and Japan will simply cease buying debt that can't be repaid. Oh, and recall that these totals don't even include state and local governments -- like the Blue State Utopias of California, Michigan, New York and New Jersey -- that are hemorrhaging revenues and residents as fast as they can pack their belongings, stuff them in U-Hauls and clear out for greener pastures. That deficit represents a 25% overshoot. Congratulations, Mr. President: your strategy is working. Hat tip: Denninger

POPSKrampus Runs: Harmless fun, or mysogynist assault? This year the Krampus debate intensified when a nine-year-old was set upon by three young Krampuses and so was so traumatized that she was reportedly afraid to return to school... The incident has heated the annual Krampus debate, with each camp growing increasingly shrill. One side holds that the "Krampus runs," as the random assaults are called, are good clean fun, the sort of local color that makes Salzburg charming and quaint, that Krampuses can be avoided by keeping off the streets between four and eight p.m., and that, in fact, most women enjoy being knocked around a bit by these burly beasts. The other side decries these assaults as blatantly sexist, misogynist exercises that have no place in modern society. "It is the only place in Europe where it is acceptable to beat women in public," a Salzburg women told me.

POPSTale of half-frozen cat named Icee
Over the next few hours, Steinbeiser and shelter workers keep substituting warm towels for the ones that have cooled down, a never-ending relay from the laundry room to the office where they've set up the temporary kitty ICU. They inject subcutaneous fluids. A dehydrated cat can't maintain its body temperature, and this was clearly a dehydrated cat, maybe so dehydrated there's been organ damage. By afternoon, he is stirring a bit when people approach, opening his eyes, reaching out a paw. They substitute the warmed-towel approach with a cozy crate next to a heater. He looks somewhat more alert. But his heartbeat remains erratic. The tension that's been swirling about the shelter for the last 36 hours dissipates. The staff, a little emotional about the miracle that blew in with first big snowstorm of the season, names him Icee. Now the little black and white cat, about 3 or 4 years old, is prowling the cat room, healthy, plumped up, personable and waiting for a home. "He is," sa

POPSIf You Think Things Have Been Rough, Hang On ’ You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet ' Just consider. The price of gas will soon likely increase. The cost of servicing our profligate borrowing will, too. One more terrorist attack like at Fort Hood, or nightly sermons from a grandstanding Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, or a new Taliban offensive, and the momentum could shift to radical Islam in its decades-long war against the United States. Next year’s tax hikes will be real and large " and no longer just this year’ s idle talk. As these storm clouds gather, Congress bickers on Saturday nights about borrowing even more money for health-care reform, yet another federal entitlement. If you think things have been rough so far, hang on, ’ cause you ain’t seen nothing yet.
