POPSA Fake 9-12 Rally Photo to overestimate DC crowd. What else would Glenn Beck and his followers do but produce a fake photo of the 9-12 crowd in DC. Lying is a way of life for these jokers. Why stop now? The problem is, since their zombies hang on every lie they come up with... They are starting to believe the rest of us can be so easily duped as well... Silly Boys.

POPS How Cellphones Will Enhance Reality An application called Enkin developed by two German researchers for phones using Google's Android operating system provides a straightforward example. It acts like an enhanced satnav system, helping you to find nearby services or points of interest. Nokia's Mobile Augmented Reality Applications project does a similar thing, drawing its annotations from known points of interest in the satnav software found in Nokia smartphones. And now Nokia is taking this further by getting your phone to augment people as well as places and objects. Users will be offered a service similar to Google's Latitude software. When the software is running on the phone, icons will appear next to anyone nearby who is also running the program to show if you have mutual friends or common interests. By seeing what we see and adding to our knowledge of the world around us, AR-capable phones offer real benefits that are only just starting to be explored.

POPSQuick Glimpse Into the Project 9/12 Tea Parties This is scarily funny. The sad thing is the speaker, starting about 2 minutes in, seems to believe that universities are brain-washing our students and that TV digital converter boxes are tools for brain-washing the rest of us. It's clear there are a lot of angry taxpayers and there is growing momentum to form a 'third' party to go up against the demopublicans, but radical-lunatic thinking like this does not help the cause.

POPSHow to Improve Your Self-Control Some people seem to find it easy to resist temptation while others can be relied on to always yield to self-gratification. To a certain extent we have to accept our starting point on the self-control sliding scale and do the best we can with it. 3. How to improve your self-control: Global processing. This means trying to focus on the wood rather than the trees. Abstract reasoning. This means trying to avoid considering the specific details of the situation at hand in favour of thinking about how actions fit into an overall framework - being philosophical. High-level categorisation. This means thinking about high-level concepts rather than specific instances. Any long-term project, whether in business, academia or elsewhere can easily get bogged down by focusing too much on the minutiae of everyday processes and forgetting the ultimate goal.

POPSScience as Search: Google Co-Founder to Fund Parkinson's Study Brin, who has said he has a genetic risk for Parkinson's, has funded the study and promised to give 10,000 people their genomic data for just $25 each (the 23andMe service regularly costs about $400). So that's at least a $4 million commitment, at least at the going rate of genotyping — and that's not counting the backend research that will take place. Brin will participate in the study. I don't doubt that many folks will be skeptical of this endeavor (Valleywag and Steve Murphy, start the race to be the first to squat on this with some snide remark, starting … now!) And sure, I acknowledge that 23andMe is good at publicity. But I think there's a fundamental shift in science here that should not go unnoted. This is an endeavor to create an apparatus for answers; answers not just to the questions we have today, but the questions science will have or 10 years from now. This is, indeed, science by search.

POPSNot a Cup, But a Cow...Long-Term Solutions for Sustainable Futures
Families who knew only poverty will be building new homes and starting businesses....Today, millions of people who were once hungry will be nourished by milk, eggs and fresh vegetables. How? Heifer International helps people obtain a sustainable source of food and income. A Heifer project consists of 3 essential components: * Livestock and other material goods * Training and extension work * Organizational development A holistic approach is necessary in order to build sustainable communities. They have developed a set of global initiatives to meet their mission of ending world hunger and poverty and caring for the earth. It’s not temporary relief. It’s not a handout. It’s securing a future with generations of people who have hope, health and dignity. “Passing on the Gift” means recipients agree to share the offspring of gift animals with others in need, making them equal partners with Heifer in the fight to end world hunger.

POPSNewsweek Editors: “Creepy,” “Deeply Manipulative,” “Creature”
THOMAS: He writes about this metaphor being a screen upon which Americans will project. He said they want of Barack Obama; I’m not sure I am Barack Obama. We don’t know anything about him. It’s creepy, never seen a victory speech with nobody on stage, what is this making fun of Biden, by the way? ROSE: Mmm! THOMAS: He had — he has the self-awareness to know that this creature he’s designed isn’t necessarily a real person, and he’s self-aware enough – ROSE: Ahhhhhh! RUSH: Ahhhh. Charlie Rose, light goes on, ahhhh. Self-aware enough to know that this creature he’s designed isn’t necessarily a real person. That is fear. These guys are looking at Obama and they’ve seen him the exact way we have, all of this time. They only now after they think they got him into office are now starting to talk about their fears about how nobody knows anything about him, his resume is thin, he’s only written two books, and they’re autobiographies, we don’t know what other books he’s read. POPSLawmakers Could Consider Gas Tax Hike Just three years ago, that trust fund enjoyed a surplus of $10 billion. Even without a tax freeze, the fund is projected to finish 2009 with a deficit of $3 billion. That that could grow as Americans drive less and buy less gas because of higher pump prices. The consequence is that only about $27 billion in federal money will be available next year to states and local governments for new infrastructure investment even though the current highway act calls for spending $41 billion a year. For many, the solution is to raise rather than suspend or cut federal fuel taxes, which haven't changed since 1993. The Transportation Construction Coalition, a group of industry companies and unions, said that if Congress does not do something about the shortfall, states will lose about one-third of their road and bridge money in the budget year starting Oct. 1. That would put 485,000 more jobs at risk.
