POPSNational Writing Day Now there's the computer and the internet. In the digital age, anyone with a laptop, a wi-fi card, and a place to sit at Starbucks can put material into cyberspace. The digital revolution means everyone's an author, every day is National Writing Day. And this sudden democratizing of the writing process generates its own set of complaints: * it's wrong to give so many people access to authorship -- after all, most people won't be very good at, and some people are going to write things that we don't agree with * computers make writing too easy -- something so important should only come with effort -- no pain, no gain -- maybe we should increase the entrance fees? * we need to control, license, censor what's on the 'net: after all, the web is full of lies, misinformation, nonsense, pornography, fraud, Nigerian money scams, and hate, not to mention all those pictures of little cats But despite the complaints, writers everywhere are grabbing their keyboards...

POPSWatching TV http://rockmusic.suite101.com/article.cfm/martyrdom_of_a_yellow_rose_as_a_student_protest From one comment made regarding this song: "She's not fictional. In fact, you can hear her speak on the track. 2. It's not so much about HER as it is about you and me watching her and then going down to Applebees for the $7.99 steak sizzler or stopping off at Starbucks for a latte. He is ridiculing US for our lack of action in the face of reality. " (alienanthropologist, Silver Spring, MD)

POPSPolanski, rape, and the myth of "Not Like Us" More: Rapists don’t tip the homeless guy, because they have some spare change from Starbucks. Rapists don’t survive the Holocaust. Rapists don’t sit in the cubicle across from us at work, and send us funny xkcd cartoons. Rapists don’t have uneventful, long-term relationships with their college girlfriends. Rapists don’t show up on set every day, directing a critically-acclaimed movie. Rapists don’t get married, nervous in a tux at the end of the aisle. Rapists don’t spend their weekends browsing at the farmer’s market, and then stop for brunch and do the NYT crossword. Rapists don’t co-write this screenplay with us. Rapists don’t hang out at the pub with their friends, watching football and drinking just half a pint of beer, because they’re driving.… We tell these myths to ourselves and each other often, but of course, they are lies. A rapist is nothing but a man who doesn’t listen when you say stop.

POPS The Sell-Phone Revolution Already, mobile services use area codes, Zip Codes, and even Global Positioning System (GPS) data to return results for nearby businesses in response to a search for, say, coffee shops. The next step is to serve an ad for a steaming cup of java on a mobile Web page just as the cell-phone Web surfer is passing a Starbucks (SBUX ). Within five years, online ad networks such as TACODA and Specific Media Inc. plan to apply behavioral techniques"using surfing data"to target ads to broadband-enabled digital television. It's not hard to imagine the day when multiple TVs tuned to the same channel in the same household will serve up different ads. "There is no question behavioral targeting will be a major component of television," says Dave Morgan, TACODA's founder and chairman. POPSFast Food Industry’s 7 Most Heinous Concoctions The American fast food industry, in its attempt to survive at the expense of our health, has come up with some creative gastronomical mashups that not only play on our weakness for artery-hardening, sugar-saturated, taste-bud tantalizers but also keeps the U.S. health care system fat with wasted spending. The best way to ‘reform’ this country’s health care system is to stop feeding it with our extremely unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles that leads to heart disease, cancer, stroke, COPD, diabetes, etc. We like the convenience of fast food, but we can force fast food chains to come up with healthier fare by educating ourselves on what a healthy diet actually consists of, and what it doesn’t. Trust me, a healthy diet is not offered at fast food restaurants. Education and a desire to live a longer healthier life is key.

POPSFed chairman's identity stolen "Identity theft is a serious crime that affects millions of Americans each year," he said. "Our family was but one of 500 separate instances traced to one crime ring. I am grateful for the law enforcement officers who patiently and diligently work to solve and prevent these financial crimes."

POPSWe really, really need to make things... How to bring the economy back? Why are there no jobs? Well because we stopped making things and then let China make all the things we used to make. Now China has our jobs. They belong to them now. And so does our debt. And so do we. We belong to China. So hey Republicans, hey Democrats, stop pretending to fight each other and wake up and smell the Starbucks. We lost and we don't even know it. Who is the enemy here? Our own greed and collective stupidity as a nation and we still are blind to the fact that we have lost our country while listening to birthers and other such nonsense. sigh.

POPSMoussavi is no reformer !! A quick glance at his bio would convince anybody of that fact. He is perhaps Ahmadinejad Lite, but not the kind of leader that would take on the Theocratic Establishment to make Iran safe for capitalism. Third, Even if Moussavi was a reformer, he would be Iran's reformer. A president for the Iranians, as it should be and not a stooge of the West. And unfortunately being a local reformer means implementing an agenda that may have local traction but foreign opposition. This may include things that Western countries would object to. i.e: the continuation of the nuclear programme and continuous support for terrorist groups. So next time you see an "Iran Expert" on your favourite Tv channel going on about Iran... do some quick research before accepting the good guys vs. bad guys narrative.

POPSStarbucks to launch coffee houses without their brand name attached The Starbucks concept is in such trouble that they are not even putting their name on the new stores. I'm sure it will still end up feeling corporate and not an organic experience. The article talks about how they went in and observed how true community coffee houses work. I'm sure there will be a SOP manual detailing exactly where to place the coffee stains on the tables to make them look "lived in."

POPSMyspace: The Ghetto of the Internet? Personally, I have no space of my own, I don't book my face, and I sure as HELL don't tweet. LiveJournal.com: When you care more about what people are thinking than what they're doing. And by the way... Peet's is more cultured than Starbucks, and Jazz is more cultured than bubblegum pop. That's neither good nor bad, but it is a fact. I'm just sayin'...

POPSStarbucks ... In Italy we don't have Starbucks, I went there sometimes in London... but yet, I can't uderstand WHICH is the difference between a coffee and a Starbucks coffee. The only one that I can think is that the waiter that carries the former has a one-to-one relationship with his/her boss, who, besides, is likely to be seen behind the bar, actually MAKING the coffee. Why do modern and advanced people prefer to work for anonimous, far and mighty business giants? Let me understand, really.

POPSNotes From Another Credit Card Crisis “The excess was similar to what’s happening with the American housing market today,” recalled Song Ji-hoon, a Rolex-wearing lawyer in his mid-30s who worked on behalf of one of the credit card companies. “Koreans wanted fancy cars, bigger TVs — although there was no real money to buy them — much the way those Americans thought that they could own houses with nothing but loans. Of course, in both instances, banks got greedy extending credits and mortgages to people who couldn’t pay back. The real hangover can be seen in a shift in buying habits. Before the mass use of credit cards, Koreans had been big savers. In a culture where family members are expected to help one another financially, they put money away for everything."

POPSIndividualism Right. we play to them. They all want us drink the same stuff, eat the same stuff and have the same look. Breed the same way, love the same way, dress the same way. is the dream for individualism too good to be true?
