POPSThe last untouchable in Europe More: On occasions, the bigotry was brutally enforced: in the early 18th century a prosperous Cagot in the Landes was caught using the font reserved for non-Cagots – his hand was chopped off and nailed to the church door. Another Cagot who dared to farm his fields (strictly verboten) had his feet pierced with hot iron spikes.… Even in death, the discrimination persisted – the Cagots were buried in their own humble cemeteries; there is still one in Bentayou-Sérée, a tiny village north of Pau.… I ask Marie-Pierre if she will let me use a picture of Sylvia – and the rest of her children. She shakes her head. "I'm sorry but no. It is OK for me to admit where I come from. But if people knew about my children's background, it might be difficult for them." She gazes out of the window, at the distant green Pyrenees. "In some places, the hatred lingers. Even now. The Cagots may be silent but I can still hear it."

POPS10 Best Prison Breaks The last 3: Imrali (1974) At a Turkish island jail, Billy Hayes stole a boat and survived to see the movie adaptation—Midnight Express—win two Oscars. Pretoria Prison (1979) Political activists learned to pick locks while in the clink. (Or did a sympathetic guard help?) They opened 10 doors on the way out. Luynes and Grasse Prisons (2001, 2003, 2007) Pascal Payet called in a hijacked helicopter. He later returned in another to lift out two buddies. Recaptured, he did it again—on Bastille Day.

POPSShrimp Fritters Once you get your mixture together, check the fritter batter for taste and color. You should be able to see the Old Bay in the batter – if not, go ahead and add a little more. Now prepare your fryer. It is best to use a “Fry Daddy” type, but whatever method you use, set the temperature to 350 degrees. You will need two spoons for this – one to drop the batter in the oil and another to take it out! Remove a large spoon of fritter batter from your bowl, being sure you have at least one portion of shrimp in every serving. When the oil is hot enough, slide a portion of fritter into the fryer and it will rise to the top. (Remember – like pancakes, the first one rarely comes out perfectly.) Once you have tasted your first fritter, adjust your batter, adding more flour if you need it thicker or more club soda if you find it uncooked in the middle but golden brown on the outside. Fritter should be lighter than an onion ring. ENJOY! Courtesy of Chef Michael Mosolino Check out h

POPS2 Year-Old Muslim Girl Beaten To Death In Chicago While the cable and network news outlets have been filled with coverage of the tragic disappearance and murder of Sandra Cantu, along with the ongoing saga of the Caylee Anthony murder, and Haleigh Cummings abduction, not one minute of coverage has been given to the murder Bhia Hadid. Volumes both in print and online have been written about the little Cantu, Cummings, and Anthony girls, but I have yet to see one article devoted to Hadid except for very brief statements on the case from Chicago-area media outlets (Orland Park is just outside Chicago). In fact, the only outrage that has been expressed in this case is from the Muslim community, who are outraged not over the little girl’s brutal murder, but over the fact that Nour Hadid was not allowed to wear her headscarf for her mugshot.

POPSMagnet woman holds any types of cooking outfit on her body “I was working as the head of the canteen at the local plant in Taganrog. Someone forgot to turn the water off one day in the meat shop of the plant. There were electric wires there all over the place. I used a wooden stick to stop the water, but I stepped into a pool on the floor. I suffered from the electric shock, but I was lucky to stay alive. They told me later that I had had 160 volts running through my body. It was supposed to be a fatal accident, but I had the third degree of disablement only,” Elena said. The woman suffered a similar incident in her childhood. When she was five years old, she fell into the dumb well of a toilet. A janitor rescued the girl as she was clinging to the edge of the toilet floor. “I remember adults telling that the incident was a token of my future wealth. It never worked out in the end, but I began to foresee the future. I predicted my mother’s death – she died from lung cancer,” Elena said.

POPSMasai warriors and the London Marathon
The warriors, who arrive in Britain next week for the race on Sunday April 13, have also been advised not to be too offended by the brief running attire of their fellow competitors in the marathon. "You will see many people who are wearing only small clothes and you will wonder why they are cold and may think they are being disrespectful. "This is normal for England, especially when it is sunny or in the evening. However, it is illegal to show certain parts of the body and for this reason it is important that you wear underpants if you are wearing your blankets." The guide provides a tour of a typical home, complete with description of what happens in a bathroom and at meal times. "People in England eat with knives, forks and spoons. If you want to use just a spoon or fork or hands then it is not a worry. "Many people drink alcohol in England. They do so at bars, at homes or at clubs - the English equivalent to a Masai party. "When people drink they sillier or

POPSReally useful (but not expensive) kitchen gifts they'll truly appreciate A few notes: An oven thermometer doesn't make your oven more functional, it makes it functional . The Perfex pepper mill is a bit pricey, but literally heirloom-quality – I inherited mine from my mother, almost 15 years ago, and she'd had it for as long as I can remember. A Dutch oven is really useful for a variety of things; the monkey and I have a small, 2-quart version that works nicely for the two of us. The Benriner mandoline is a kitchen delight, and can be found for as little as $15 at many Asian grocery stores. Microplane zesters and graters are a pleasure to use. And I'd recommend bamboo spoons over wooden, myownself. Didn't clip the tiffin box because I think the choice of how to carry one's lunch is strongly determined by individual taste, and it's a mistake to try to guess what somebody else will like. (I wouldn't like or use a tiffin box, f'rinstance.)

POPSSpoons instead of making an extra trip to get it right now." I was impressed. I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter’s zip on his trousers. Looking around, I noticed that all the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So before he walked off, I asked the waiter, "Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?" "Oh, certainly!" Then he lowered his voice. "Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also found out that we can save time in the rest-room. By tying this string to the tip of you know what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the rest-room by 76.39 per cent." I asked "After you get it out, how do you put it back?" "Well," he whispered, "I don’t know about the others, but I use the spoon."
