China unveils 'world's fastest train link'
ratilfar
by ratilfar  12-26-2009    1
Test runs for the service began earlier in December and the link officially went into service when the first scheduled train left the eastern metropolis of Wuhan on Saturday. By comparison, the average for high-speed trains in Japan was 243 kilometres per hour while in France it was 277 kilometres per hour, said Xu Fangliang, general engineer in charge of designing the link, according to Xinhua. Beijing has an ambitious rail development programme aimed at increasing the national network from the current 86,000 kilometres to 120,000 kilometres, making it the most extensive rail system outside the United States. China unveiled its first high-speed line at the time of the Beijing Olympics in 2008 -- a service linking the capital with the port city of Tianjin.

Now this is real stimulus. The U.S. has nothing like this. The only "stimulus" the present idiotic administration can come up with is throwing good money at the useless trade unions in the auto industry for more votes and payback for their support, and to bail out the fat cats in banks and on wall street. It is clear to me. this trojan horse empty suit is trying to wreck our economy.

China begins 1000 km high speed rail link
pkronfield
by pkronfield  12-26-2009
I recently took the 330 km/hr (200+ mph) train from Beijing to Tianjin. It is stunning, smooth, and ultra modern. Now this is real stimulus. Our U.S. administration are total idiots first by a stiulus that is nothing but political pork, and throwing good money after bad in bailing out the failing U.S. car industry. The U.S. does not have anything comparing to this Chinese train. Our infrastructure is failing badly, and we are rapidly becoming a third world country, thanks to the fools who voted in an empty suit marxist president.

All nay-saying in the world does not change the reality of the region. Iran has long declared Israel it's "sworn enemy", not the other way around. The "high speed" of their military technological advancements plus their political expansion into S. America has to be taken seriously as a threat to us all...not just Israel anymore.

The Uncertainty Economy
merrie
by merrie  12-7-2009    1
One big difference between Washington and private markets is that politicians think everything they do is free-standing. Markets, however, combine all the potential costs of Washington's policies and then decide whether to invest, or not. Consider what private decision-makers see in their future: A 2,074-page, trillion-dollar health-care bill to redesign 17% of the U.S. economy. A carbon tax"cap and trade"that remains an Obama priority ahead of the Copenhagen climate summit next month. A falling dollar and gyrating commodity prices, with no idea where those prices will go next. Democratic liberals are talking about an income tax surcharge to pay for any commitment in Afghanistan. Card check, to expand unionization of the private economy, remains a priority. Domestic discretionary spending in fiscal 2010 is set to rise at 12.1%, with inflation near zero. Nurturing a fragile economic recovery into a durable expansion requires policies that restore public confidence and reassure

The car, Bloodhound, is designed to travel faster than 1,000mph (1,600km/h) " far in excess of the speed of sound and the equivalent of crossing four football pitches every second. The present record of 763mph was set in 1997 by the RAF pilot Andy Green, who will also drive Bloodhound. The time trial is scheduled for 2011 and will take place in a desert in the Northern Cape of South Africa.

Schwarzenegger quietly kills effort to get commuter rail funds
Lexica
by Lexica  11-13-2009    1
More: Eliminated from the state application for federal funds was almost $170 million for positive train control — computer-guided braking systems designed to prevent crashes and allow conventional trains to safely travel at 110 mph. Such automated systems, which the federal government wants installed by 2015, would have prevented the commuter rail crash in suburban Los Angeles last year that killed 25 people in the worst rail accident in modern California history. Also removed was $969 million in railroad crossing improvements, track additions, overpasses and maintenance projects designed to benefit the corridor between San Diego and Los Advertisement Angeles as well as the main rail line through Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. One major goal of commuter rail services has been to reduce the travel time between San Diego and Los Angeles from about three hours to two hours.

Chairman of Senate Judiciary Committee Flunks Question on Constitution
merrie
by merrie  10-22-2009    1
Sen. Leahy: "No. The federal government does that on federal highways." Prior to 1995, the federal government mandated a speed limit of 55 miles an hour on all four-lane highways. The limit was repealed in 1995 and the authority to set speed limits reverted back to the states. Technically, the law that established the 55 mile-an-hour limit--the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act of 1974--withheld federal highway funds from states that did not comply with it. The law rested on the Commerce Clause, which give Congress the authority to regulate interstate commerce, and Congress’ authority to dole out federal tax revenue. Someone who does not buy health insurance, critics have argued, is not by that ommission engaged in interstate commerce and thus there is no act of interstate commerce for Congress to regulate in this situation.
