What does it mean to be an American? This 10-year-old boy gets it
Lexica
by Lexica  11-12-2009    13
More: After asking his parents whether it was against the law not to stand for the pledge, Will decided to do something. On Monday, Oct. 5, when the other kids in his class stood up to recite the pledge of allegiance, he remained sitting down…Each day, the substitute got a little more cross with him. On Thursday, it finally came to a head… Will was sent to the office… At the end of our interview, I ask young Will a question that might be a civics test nightmare for your average 10-year-old. Will's answer, though, is good enough — simple enough, true enough — to give me a little rush of goose pimples. What does being an American mean? “Freedom of speech,” Will says, without even stopping to think. “The freedom to disagree. That's what I think pretty much being an American represents.” Somewhere, Thomas Jefferson smiles.

Bush passed the test
kareval
by kareval  10-27-2009
George Bush's biggest accomplishment according to his demon father was the way he handled 9/11. Then he SMILES when he refers to "this 9/11." Let's see: 1. Endless war in Iraq and Afghanistan 2. Trillions of dollars wasted - with big portions of it going to Bush cronies 3. A complete gutting of the Bill of Rights And there is still no credible information on what happened that day: Building 7 collapsing, US air defense shut down by Cheney's order, no plane debris at the Pentagon, and on and on it goes. "He passed the test."

Child Witches
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-28-2009    2
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo nearly 50,000 children live on the streets of Kinshasa, the capital, because they were accused of witchcraft and rejected by their families. In Nigeria, the Child Rights and Rehabilitation Network reports that nearly 25,000 children have been abandoned or persecuted on the belief they were witches or wizards. Organizations such as the United Nations Children’s Fund, Africa Unite Against Child Abuse, and Save the Children have stepped in where they could to stop the witch-hunt. But the phenomenon of “witch children” is so widespread throughout Africa these organizations have set up “witch camps” as shelters for children who cannot be safely placed with a relative. Throughout history, people described as witches have been tortured, persecuted, and even murdered. And it is usually society’s most vulnerable who are targeted. With the HIV/AIDS epidemic leaving many children orphaned, and rampant poverty ensuing from crop failure and decade-

Angel Of The Skies
sahara
by sahara  10-25-2009
"If we can bring smiles and laughter, even if it is just for a few minutes, to these people, well, then it is worth it," she said. Schmidt 'adopted' Army National Guard Sgt. Tim Gallagher last year and sends care packages on a monthly basis. Although he enjoys the snacks and toiletries, he considers the journals the most moving and thoughtful of all the gifts he has received. "They will be something I cherish for the rest of my life," he said via e-mail. "Something for the ages to look at and see how people really feel about what we are doing here." Even when Schmidt does not have time to put together a care package, she tries to send her soldiers a postcard or short letter. "The morale of soldiers can be made or broken from the amount of mail they do or do not receive." If you would like to adopt a soldier, contact Robin Schmidt at find_robin@hotmail.com.

Suicide of the West? by Thomas Sowell

the idea of a "war on terror"-- as if that will stop the terrorists' war on us. The ostensible reason for releasing al-Megrahi was compassion for a man terminally ill. It is ironic that this was said in Scotland, for exactly 250 years ago another Scotsman-- Adam Smith-- said, "Mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent." Tragically, those with this strange inversion of values include the Attorney General of the United States, Eric Holder. Although President Obama has said that he does not want to revisit the past, this is only the latest example of how his administration's actions are the direct opposite of his lofty words. It is not just a question of looking backward. The decision to second-guess CIA agents who extracted information to save American lives is even worse when you look forward. This is not simply an injustice to those who have tried to keep this country safe, it is a danger recklessly imposed on future Americans whose safety cannot always be guaranteed

"Life is the saddest thing in the world, but to tell you the truth, it's beautiful."
Lexica
by Lexica  8-5-2009
The piece begins: I lost two of my biggest reasons for living years ago, a couple weeks apart. My daughter died in her sleep before her first birthday, and her mother, my wife, took enough sleeping pills to join her two weeks later. Difficult to read – have a tissue handy – but beautiful and heart-filling as well.

Well, there ya have it folks - the faces of "right wing terrorists" - can't you just see the evil? Huh? Don't they look BAAADDDDD? Poor libs, they just don’t dare like her. She is everything they fear. This hardworking person who has a strong sense of responsibility and tells it like it is must be ground into the dirt. a mother, a wife, an ex-governor, an attractive woman and down to earth. That really creeps the liberals out. To them there is something obviously wrong with her. She is not elite. She makes lunch for her brood. She never looks harried. She always smiles. She is stuck on God. She must be plastic. What a travesty the Left has done to this family. Absolutely disgusting.

They Tell The Stories Of Our Lives
debbyski
by debbyski  7-21-2009    8
I have a nice one on my right knee made sailing off my bike as a 10 year old girl and a really good one on my right hand washing a glass when my girls were young (I stuck my hand in it and it cut me really good; I never did that again) I've got one right in the folds of my face where one smiles; you can't even see it, but I'm constantly reminded of it because I have nerve damage in my front teeth and face from it. I fell of our front porch when I was scrubbing it while wearing flip flops years ago when I was young. It was about a 12 ft. fall.
