POPSFlu zombies reported in Mexico City The flu zombies first appeared saturday night as the city sewer system failed and manhole covers were seen being shoved aside. The 'walking dead' have been impossible to negotiate with simply because they're dead, but Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has sent a forward team to attempt negotiations as early as Wednesday. Sporadic gunfire could be head as Mexico's Head of National Security urged people in a televised address 'to remain calm and eat an enchillata.' Attempts to bribe the zombies reportedly failed when Treasury Secretary Juan Corona attempted to meet with the zombies and was promptly eaten.

POPSGarlic can help prevent colds, evidence indicates More: While many people opt for garlic supplements, others prefer to increase the garlic in their diets. Many home chefs mistakenly cook garlic immediately after crushing or chopping it, says Dr. David W. Kraus, associate professor of environmental science and biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. To maximize the health benefits, you should crush the garlic at room temperature and allow it to sit for about 15 minutes. That triggers an enzyme reaction that boosts the healthy compounds in garlic.

POPSDeath As Timeless Reality Death is ultimately just another transformation, from one configuration of matter and energy into another. But unless you can stand outside the arena of change, death represents an end point, an extinction. To escape death ultimately means escaping the worldview that gives death its terrible sense of closure and finality. Adapted from Ageless Body, Timeless Mind, by Deepak Chopra (Three Rivers Press, 1998).

POPSTHE MILKMAN COMETH! While Taylor was at the FDA in the early 90’s, he also oversaw the policy regarding Monsanto’s genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rbGH/rbST)—injected into cows to increase milk supply. The milk from injected cows has more pus, more antibiotics, more bovine growth hormone, and most importantly, more insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). IGF-1 is a huge risk factor for common cancers and its high levels in this drugged milk is why so many medical organizations and hospitals have taken stands against rbGH.

POPSWarning: Eating Meat May Cause Sickness, Paralysis and Death
In short, E. coli didn't just "happen" to the meat industry -- it's a consequence of industrial practices. But nowhere in the article (or in the halls of the USDA or the largescale beef producers for that matter) is the possibility of moving away from this corn-based system raised as a solution for the industrial system. Surprisingly, the article includes virtually no proposed solutions for this crisis -- just vague assurances that the USDA isn't "standing still" on the issue. In reality, the industry focuses exclusively on "managing" the ongoing presence of E. coli O157 though the development of an E. coli vaccine for cows, and irradiation or chemical washes for the meat. All of which are attempts to mask the risks of a failed system and represent an institutionalizing of the underlying failures. And none of which make me ever want to touch industrial meat again. Indeed, if there ever was a powerful argument for eating only grass-fed beef from small producers, this article is it. T

POPSWarning: This product may cause sickness, paralysis, and death
Given the number of times that beef has been recalled due to contamination in just the past few years, doesn’t it make sense to stop eating it? How many of you have stopped? Stephanie Smith didn’t stop. She is currently in a coma, near death, and paralyzed from eating a single hamburger. E. coli O157 got into industrial beef in the first place because the meat industry insists on feeding cows corn—something they cannot easily digest—instead of grass. Among other things, corn feeding requires cows to be fed a steady dose of antibiotics, which has led to the rise of antibiotic resistance among various pathogens. But more importantly, it has caused very real changes in the cow’s gut which has allowed this toxic strain of E. coli to take hold, a strain that research suggests cannot survive in the gut of cows that eat only grass. The simple solution would be to feed cows grass. But, that solution cannot fatten cattle quickly enough to suit our current appetite for it.

POPSBBC: "Pedigree Dogs Exposed"
"Purebred" dogs are victims of over a century of inbreeding for looks. They are essentially mutant dwarfs that are plagued with all manner of sickness and genetic infirmities, who look almost nothing like their healthy ancestors of 100+ years ago. The most distressing part is to listen to the breeders who, because they want a dog to look a certain way, breed siblings to siblings, parents to children... And the results is King Charles Spaniels existing in constant agony because they've been bred so small their brain does not fit in their skull. That ridge on a Rhodesian Ridgeback, that's mild spina bifida, leaving the dog prone to spinal infections. But breeders kill healthy puppies born without it, lest they ruin the (mutant) breed. All so the mutants can be shown in the ring. The analysis of how British attitudes towards purebred dogs relates to the idea of eugenics, and breeding for so-called "pure" traits. It frames what dog breeders attitudes most disturbi

POPSJoseph Moshe (MOSSAD Microbiologist): “Swine flu vaccine is bioweapon” "He claimed that the vaccine contained an adjuvant (additive) designed to weaken the immune system, and replicated RNA from the virus responsible for the 1918 pandemic Spanish flu, causing global sickness and mass death. Sources tell us that Bar-Joseph Moshe made no threat against the President or the White House. He did not mention any bomb or attack. He then proceeded to inform the White House he intended to go public with this information. When he noticed men in suits in front of his house and feared that the FBI was about to detain him, he packed some belongings into his car and, him being a dual Israeli citizen, tried to reach the Israeli consulate located in close proximity to the federal building where the standoff took place.

POPSGreenland Glaciers Melting At Shocking Speed I just read a Danish article, that stated that the walls of a 15 square kilometer ice-melt lake have collapsed, causing billions of liters of freshwater to rush into the sea, causing the death of an untold amount of fish, due to decompression sickness, as they were forced to quickly flee to the surface of the fjord, causing their immediate death. I can't seem to find anything about this calamity in English yet, but here's a translated page about this terrible incident; http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=da&u=http://www.dr.dk/Nyheder/Indland/2009/09/12/141735.htm&ei=RdSsSsOeLYXt-Abb-Jy9Bg&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=1&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://www.dr.dk/Nyheder/Indland/2009/09/12/141735.htm%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG

POPSWhy Millions of Americans Don't Need a Swine Flu Vaccine "That's because many of those who were infected by swine flu never had any idea they were infected at all. They were so-called "symptomless carriers," because they never experienced a sniffle or other flu-like symptoms. Their immune systems conquered swine flu automatically and effectively, creating antibodies and overcoming the infection by relying on fundamental human physiology. Even for those who got sick, virtually everyone survived the sickness. After a few days of extra rest in bed (and hopefully some nutritional supplementation), they were able to kick the virus and return to normal life. This is all a normal part of beating any flu. All these millions of people who were infected by H1N1 and didn't die have naturally made their own swine flu antibodies. They are now immune to the swine flu, and they now have zero risk of being infected or killed by this H1N1 swine flu in the future."

POPSThe school lunch scam Reform in food industry is no less important than reform in healthcare. That's where most diseases grow. Culture of sickness, craziness, violence and apathy has to be replaced by culture of good taste, healthy and delicious natural food. We, and children especially, do damaging ourselves consuming synthetic dishes with countless, meaningless at least, and in fact poisonous, artificial ingredients in mercilessly processed products.

POPSAfter the Bomb in Hiroshima - Photos I can't say a whole lot more than ... WOW! This is a pretty heavy topic, but these pictures say a tremendous amount about the destruction that occurred in World War II. Mostly, I just thought you'd be interested in the photos, if you haven't seen them yet. There's nothing gory, just destruction of buildings, homes, etc. But it's clear to see what it meant for anyone who was living there. The article has some good information in it as well.

POPSMore Healthcare Sickness!
1996 Hastings Center article in which Emanuel wrote this: This civic republican or deliberative democratic conception of the good provides both procedural and substantive insights for developing a just alloca- tion of health care resources. Procedurally, it suggests the need for public forums to deliberate about which health services should be considered basic and should be socially guaranteed. Substantively, it suggests services that promote the continuation of the polity-those that ensure healthy future genera- tions, ensure development of practical reasoning skills, and ensure full and active participation by citizens in public deliberations-are to be socially guaranteed as basic. Conversely, services provided to individuals who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens are not basic and should not be guaranteed. An obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia. A less obvious example Is is guaranteeing neuropsychologi

POPSWho is Culpable? At the end of this clip I've included a comment made by a reader. The reader brings up a good point about the idea that even "moderate" theists are responsible for in some way for tragedies like this because they enable more extreme theists to justify their religious delustions.

POPSUK Study: Over 50% of Children Have Tamiflu Side-Effects Note the side effects listed. It is also being over-prescribed according to a health expert since the UK government setup a website to by-pass doctors for patients to obtain the drug. Peter Holden, the British Medical Association’s lead expert on swine flu, suggested that Tamiflu was being overused and did not need to be offered to everyone with mild symptoms.

POPSPrevention world buzzing after health report Through my health clinic, I visit a nurse 4 times a year to work on health programs that focus on wellness. Visits to my doctor are less frequent and usually only for prescriptions and a discussion on cricket or golf. ( That, in itself, is an uplifting experience after visits which were all about trying things to get better.) I suppose I will have to praise them for being ahead of many in Australia.
