POPSChild Witches
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo nearly 50,000 children live on the streets of Kinshasa, the capital, because they were accused of witchcraft and rejected by their families. In Nigeria, the Child Rights and Rehabilitation Network reports that nearly 25,000 children have been abandoned or persecuted on the belief they were witches or wizards. Organizations such as the United Nations Children’s Fund, Africa Unite Against Child Abuse, and Save the Children have stepped in where they could to stop the witch-hunt. But the phenomenon of “witch children” is so widespread throughout Africa these organizations have set up “witch camps” as shelters for children who cannot be safely placed with a relative. Throughout history, people described as witches have been tortured, persecuted, and even murdered. And it is usually society’s most vulnerable who are targeted. With the HIV/AIDS epidemic leaving many children orphaned, and rampant poverty ensuing from crop failure and decade-

POPSObama On Nuclear Conflict With Iran: "I'm Not Interested In Victory" (Video)
Obama At The G-20 On Iran: "I'm Not Interested In Victory" Oh yes he did say it, first of all, Obama gets hit with a very good question from CBS's Chip Reid Well done Chip Reid....You showed the President's hand... Reid: Thank you Mr. President, you just mentioned sanctions that have bite, what kinds of sanction, and I know you can't get into details but what kind of sanctions at all would have bite with Iran, do you really think that any kind of sanctions would have any effect on somebody like Ahmadinejad, secondly some of your advisers today said that this announcement was a victory, do you consider it a victory and if so why didn't you announce it earlier since you have known since you were President elect?.. Obama flustered by the question, "I'm not interested in victory, I'm interested in solving the problem" Clearly, today is a big smokescreen, he doesn't wanna come across as "America good, Iran bad," the global citizen is all talk here, we're not going to do

POPSCheetah-dog partnership at the San Diego Zoo More: Finally, when they died of old age, we decided to continue this dog and cheetah tradition. Chobe and Jessie were the second generation; Karroo and Sven are one of three current cheetah/dog pairs. We even have a wolf/dog pair: Akela and Nala! Where you can find them Karroo, a female cheetah, and Sven, her canine counterpart, appear regularly in shows and at the Wild Animal Park's Cheetah Run Safari. Their trainers talk about endangered species, our breeding success with cheetahs at the Wild Animal Park, and the importance of conservation and recycling. Also, look for a plaque commemorating Anna and Arusha, our first dog and cheetah pair, at the entrance of their first home, the Wegeforth Bowl, which hosts our sea lion shows.

POPS"An outgoing, confident, people-loving dog that puts his heart & soul into everything he does."
More: "That includes climbing into your lap, digging out of an inadequately fenced yard, competing in canine agility trials or just following you around the house," Reynolds said. "Intelligence, determination, trainability and a good sense of humor are the hallmarks of the breed." Pit bulls may be crazy about people, but that's not always the case with other dogs. "They're terriers, and like all terriers, aggression towards other animals is not uncommon," she cautioned. "And like all dogs, pit bulls and their owners need training to become a good people/dog ambassador team." The reality is that even pit bulls from known fighting backgrounds, covered in fight scars, often turn out to be complete sweethearts -- even with other dogs. One of the best-known examples of this is Hector, a squirming, face-kissing bundle of love who is a certified therapy dog today, but started out his life as a fighter at Michael Vick's Bad Newz Kennels.

POPS"Please pray for us" A Sobering Letter From Kabul We currently have 68 women and 12 children in the Kabul shelter and 32 women and 4 children in the Mazar shelter. Last night the police called us and referred 2 new cases to us. We have tried to ensure the participation of women in the elections. We have helped many women (our clients who are living at home rather than in our shelters) get registered to vote. I have also encouraged our staff to vote on election day. We cannot take the women from the shelter to vote on election day. It will simply be too dangerous. Also I don't want people in the neighborhood to find out that a lot of women are living in one house. I will try and send another update soon. Thank you all for caring about this beleaguered country and it's women and girls. Please pray for us during these terrifying days. Manizha Naderi Executive Director, Women for Afghan Women

POPSDetection dogs help save endangered species More: seven of the nine dogs currently classed as WDC Detection Dogs are, in fact, shelter animals. Dogs surrendered because they were "out of control" or "just plain crazy", it is that intense, obsessive drive to "do something" that makes them both an annoying pet and a successful working dog. To find a new detection dog, Megan or a colleague will walk up and down the rows of the shelter bouncing a tennis ball. The dogs that are more interested in the ball than anything else make the first cut. Then one by one, the dogs are tested using toys and food, with additional distractions added over time. The dog that is completely obsessed with the toy over food or any other distraction is a strong candidate.… Meet the real-life dog hero, Pepin, and his handler, Dr. Megan Parker, at the 2009 Wildlife Conservation Expo on October 3 in San Francisco. POPSYankees’ Postgame Wrap-Up in the Name of Charity This story is really about how individuals are doing something to help the needy. You cannot and should not expect the government to do it. They are more concerned with making money for their corporate brethren. Syd Mandelbaum started an organization, Rock and Wrap It Up, in 1990 by persuading rock bands to send their prepared, but unserved, backstage and concessions food to local charities and has succeeding in doing so after the performances of 160 bands. Since 2002, his group has added 31 sports teams — including the Yankees, the Mets, the Jets, the Giants, the Nets, the Knicks, the Rangers, and the Devils — and their concessionaires. Carl Thomas, a volunteer warehouse worker recovering from his own hard times, sums it up this way: “When I do this, it keeps rewarding me. It comes back to me at different times, tenfold.” “They who give have all things; they who withhold have nothing” - - Hindu proverb.

POPS10 years ago at the Humane Society... Now I wish I could go home and hug my two shelter kitties. I don't know what was going on with their previous people that they wound up at the shelter, but I am grateful every single day that they're now home with us. "Never living in cage again: Priceless."

POPSMy great job Ken White is the president of the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA. More: It is, in fact, both hard and wonderful to come here every day. Wonderful animals, smiling and happy, leaving us for their new homes. Wonderful animals, brought to us ill and injured, being made well by caring and compassionate staff and volunteers so that they then, too, can find their new families. Wonderful people, staff and volunteers, working to make a difference. Wonderful people, coming to us to help us save these thousands of wonderful lives. To be a part of that, to know that every day has that as its purpose, it is truly wonderful. Hard and wonderful, and I am grateful for the opportunity.

POPSNo Thanks, I'll Hold It
The Massachusetts Family Institute has begun running radio ads warning mothers that they may no longer want to let their young daughters use public restrooms because “Beacon Hill is about to make it legal for men to use women’s bathrooms.” Kris Mineau, president of the institute, said the bill would open up all gyms, showers, restrooms and shelters to anyone of any gender because there’s no clear way to determine if an individual is transgender. “There’s no restrictions in this bill as to what opposite gender can use the facility. We’re not going to be able to police this,” he said. “There’s no pre-requirement of surgery or appearance or anything else.” Mineau said the bill would make it easier for the thousands of registered sex offenders in Massachusetts to gain access to children and women in public restrooms by claiming they are transgender. I feel bad for “Ethan,” but it’s bad enough as it is having to send your daughter into the women’s room at the mall . . .
