Obama's health insurance is deadly fiasco
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  12-28-2009
I don't usually comment on US health care, BUT to be *forced* to pay private profit-making company for inadequate health coverage, with premiums increasing as I age, would make me very riled. And the policy won't do any good for the image of Obama, the Federales, or the health insurance industry. Where is Ralph Nader and a third Party when you need them? Couldn't he get together with Ron Paul -- the ultimate coalition. Howard Dean seems to understand what's going on, but he's an MD. If I were an American, then I would want to try something different. Anything! Why aren't people organising?

The Rich Rule Over The Poor
debbyski
by debbyski  12-21-2009    4
The rich rule over the poor, And the borrower is the slave of the lender. (Proverbs 22:7 ESV) And so it goes. King George and his band of bandits got us into this mess with conservatives cheering him along every step of the way while he created a mountain of new federal debt, the largest contributors to which were Bush's tax breaks for the rich. Their hero of the hour shamelessly exploited 9/11, fear and the "war on terror" as a pretext to take the ax to civil liberties and to shroud their policies and actions in secrecy. So don't cry me a river now and cloak it with a biblical quote. You are the ones who wanted to mythify Bush as a great leader--pull your crap out on someone else who is idiotic enough to believe in it, but don't pretend you can cash in to God's love by supporting benefits that go to the wealthiest of Americans and contradict the message of Jesus of serving the poor. It's disgusting and so are you.

THE DEADLIEST CARD GAME IN TOWN
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  11-29-2009
but they have joined the right’s sycophants and willingly do the bidding of the LOBBY FIRMS in order to receive the dirty money (more like blood money) these cut-throats will give them (to turn a blind eye) in the form of campaign contributions. A shell game of sorts, where the suckers, in many instances, have no idea of what is going on and how it negatively affects their well-being. It's a sad game that cannot be won by anyone who falls into a category called LOW-INCOME. The banks and credit card companies’ makeup all the rules and they are always in their favor. NO ONE, can get out of the traps they set, while they siphon off any earnings said suckers have given their blood, sweat and tears to acquire. It should be a crime because it is criminal but it is not. Watch, learn and weep for those who get snared in THE DEADLIEST CARD GAME IN TOWN, where there is no place to turn for help. "Alien" Jellyfish Found in Arctic Deep
dmoonme1
by dmoonme1  12-16-2009
Jellies are among the least understood groups of animals on Earth, Raskoff added. "They seem about as alien as animals get." Scientists plan to research more of the unexplored Arctic waters before warming and ice melt drastically transforms the ocean environment, according to NOAA's Web site. Biologists are realizing that jellyfish are more common predators in the oceans than thought.

Octopus Builds Home In Coconut Shells
merrie
by merrie  12-15-2009    1
VIDEO http://bit.ly/8ZQDT8 "What makes it different from a hermit crab is this octopus collects shells for later use, so when it's transporting it, it's not getting any protection from it," Finn said. "It's that collecting it to use it later that is unusual." The researchers think the creatures probably once used shells in the same way. But once humans began cutting coconuts in half and discarding the shells into the ocean, the octopuses discovered an even better kind of shelter, Finn said. "Octopuses have always stood out as appearing to be particularly intelligent invertebrates," Robson said. "They have a fairly well-developed sense of vision and they have a fairly intelligent brain. So I think it shows the behavioral capabilities that these organisms have." There is always debate in the scientific community about how to define tool use in the animal kingdom, Robson said. The Australian researchers defined a tool as an object carried or maintained for future use.

The Killer Tomatoes Have Returned
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  12-5-2009
Tomato plants -- as well as other veggie plants -- can trap small insects in those sticky hairs, and (I'm imagining, because the story doesn't say) holds them captive until they die. Then the plant can absorb the nutrients the insects give off as the bugs decay. When the insect is just a shell, it falls to the soil. I will never underestimate my vegetables again. I think they're watching me.

Year 2100, "Ocean pH levels will very likely decrease by as much as 0.5pH units, impairing ability of marine organisms such as corals, crabs and oyster to form shells or exoskeletons." This claim originated from the University of California's Professor Gretchen Hoffman, ". . . global warming . . . is threatening the future of Antarctic's tiny pteropod marine snail . . . atmospheric buildup of carbon dioxide is expected to make the oceans more acidic, impairing the snail's ability to make a shell . . . It is possible by 2050 they may not be able to make a shell any more." Hoffman called the pteropod the "potato chip" of the oceans, a food source for many aquatic creatures. This hoax would have never gotten off the ground if the media had done their jobs instead of being actively involved in the hoax themselves - instead they chose to let political agendas override journalistic principals.

Development: Hunger Summit's Failure to Expose Grim Reality
zizzy
by zizzy  12-2-2009
Diouf was not suggesting rich countries shell out 44 billion in fresh cash - much of the money could simply come by diverting already-assigned resources to increase agriculture’s share of ODA from the current level of around five percent to about 18-19 percent. But the FAO does not have any battleships or financial sanctions to use to coerce nations into taking action. Before the summit Diouf said that the FAO budget does not permit it to do much alone about such a huge problem, pointing out that individual states, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the regional development banks are the ones with the serious money. Furthermore, a large portion of the hunger problem is related to unfair international trade conditions - caused in part by First World support of domestic agriculture - where the FAO has no role. It is up to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to engineer a deal to iron out these distortions.

The Story of the Red Poppy
sahara
by sahara  11-21-2009
So the Americans arranged for artificial poppies to be made by women in war-ravaged northern France. The funds raised from selling the poppies were for children who had suffered because of the war. In Britain, the weary soldiers came back from the grimness of war to find that life was hard at home too, though in a different way. Many of the men were wounded or disabled or suffering the effects of gas and shell-shock. Many were physically or mentally unable to work; many others found that there were no jobs anyway. The provision made for them by the state was less than adequate. They certainly didn't get the heroes' homecoming that they had been led to expect. So ex-servicemen's societies united in 1921 to form the British Legion. Its purpose was to provide support to ex-servicemen, especially the disabled, and their families, and it was to become one of the most successful British charities ever.

Looking at the math behind "53 miles per burrito"
Lexica
by Lexica  11-17-2009    1
More: Of course, a burrito comes with sales taxes, which pay for another fraction of that road. And the margin on a burrito is much higher than on gasoline - that margin then becomes profit for the owner and wages for the workers, all of which are taxable and turn into another fraction of that road I am freeloading on. Beyond the margin for the taqueria, money is made by people who grow and sell food, which is ostensibly a nobler pursuit than drilling, baby, drilling. But the real bottom line? It's not really 53 miles per burrito. It's one burrito per 53 miles. If you are sitting in your car, you will be shortly sitting on that burrito as it becomes a permanent part of your ass. I meanwhile will be adding extra guacamole because after I rode 53 miles to work, I ride 7 miles back to Caltrain on the way home. Yum. Guacamole, anyone? :-D

Will The Left Do a Kamikazi on Obamacare?
ColoradoRight
by ColoradoRight  11-6-2009    1
Mob-O-Care is still the big banana. The Democrats can still carry it over the top and then take their losses in elections to come with the faith that no Republican Congress will dare to infuriate all the Victim Groups of the Left by repealing free medical care for forty percent of the population. Or whatever they settle on. Remember that the actual dollar figures have never been believable, and Medicare and Social Security are operating as accounting fictions even now. So this has all been media drivel from top to bottom. All they have to do is pass a shell of a bill, set up the bureaucracies, and expand them in future Democrat-dominated Congresses.
