POPSwhat people's dreams were like before the cinema was invented ?? .. "The state of cinema IS a dream state. No known address. Occupied, dictated, created by no one. When it comes to moving goal posts, what art form could be described as more flexible than film?" "It was in Tarkovsky's Stalker that I saw an image of a dream that I have been visited by all my life made real (Does a thing have to be shared to be made real?). A bird flying towards the camera dips its wing into the sand that fills a room. Did I imagine this?" Each year, the Film Society invites one of the leaders in cinema to address the issues facing the film world today. In 2006, the State of Cinema address was delivered by the stunning, eloquent and provocative Tilda Swinton. given on Sunday, April 29, 2006 at the Sundance Kabuki Cinemas. warmly recommended 2 read it all !!

POPSArdi Oldest Human Ancestor n it's Female :D Nicknamed Ardi, the 4.4 millionyear-old female partial skeleton, Ardipithecus ramidus, was discovered in the Ethiopia in 1994. It took a team of 47 international scientists approximately 15 years to piece together her fragile remains in order to reveal her significance. Some of the questions answered by studying Ardi include how hominids became bipedal (walk on two feet) and revealing the first evolutionary steps taken by our ancestors after humans diverged from a common ancestor we once shared with chimpanzees http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/ardipithecus/ardipithecus.html

POPSBREAKING: US Intel Had Info Ahead of Airliner Attack
"The warning signs would have triggered red flags, and the suspect would have never been allowed to board that plane for America." Officials said Obama chose to make a second statement in as many days because a morning briefing offered him new information in the government's possession about the suspect's activities and thinking, along with al-Qaida's plans. Obama's statement showed more fire than he had shown previously about the lapses that allowed the bombing attack to take place and came after his homeland security secretary, Janet Napolitano, had to backtrack on an assertion that "the system worked" in the Detroit airliner scare. Some have criticized Obama for not addressing the issue publicly sooner. An angered Obama called the shortcomings "totally unacceptable" and told reporters traveling with him on vacation here that he wanted a preliminary report by Thursday on what went wrong on Christmas Day, when the suspect carried explosives onto a flight from Amsterdam

POPSObama Pledges ACTION
Obama restated his mission to craft policy that will cut CO2 emissions in America by 80 percent before 2050 – an act that will completely devastate the economyand herald a new great depression as we have previously documented. He also said that $100 billion dollars would be mobilized for climate financing by 2020, the vast majority of which will come from a global tax on financial transactions and a GDP tax, as we have highlighted. Obama said the ability to “take collective action is in doubt right now,” admitting that the success of the conference “hangs in the balance.” Upset at the fact that the Copenhagen agenda is stalling, Obama is busily attempting to engineer an agreement via a series of behind closed doors meetings with world leaders. “President Barack Obama and world leaders are holding another impromptu meeting in search of a climate deal,” reports the Associated Press. “Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said Friday that Obama was meeting behind closed doors with the

POPSKiller Tripped on Baggy Pants, Plunged to Death after Slaying Three The horrified woman managed to slam and lock the door just in time, only to find the bloodied bodies of her brother and dad inside. A relentless Quinones kicked the door in and lunged for Leyanis, but she was able to make it to a fire escape, screaming for help to construction workers on the roof of the building next door. "She just ran in and told the contracting guys there was a shooting, there's somebody who got shot," said the building manager, who declined to identify herself. "She was hysterical, she couldn't talk." Meanwhile, her wounded mother scrambled to safety out the front door. Fleeing empty-handed, Quinones ditched his gun, a .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol loaded with hollow-point bullets, and made a dash down a rear fire escape. But again, his low-slung pants fell to his ankles, tripping him and sending him falling three stories to his death, authorities said.

POPSWhy is marriage a civil right? More: This is why refusing communion is not a violation of civil rights - because communion is not a civil contract, it does not confer civil rights or responsibilities, and is therefore not a matter of civil law. I will say it yet again. Your laws that say same-sex couples can't get married are the same laws that say they can't eat shrimp or cut their beards. Which is fine and well for you, but I'm going to continue to enjoy my crab louie salad bare-faced without even humoring the idea that I need to protect, defend, and preserve your "sanctity of brunch".

POPSWhy is America Still Allied with Saudi Arabia?
The first wife kept swinging the stick at her. Karin fled. Finally, Satam got Karin her own apartment. Whereupon, Fatima started calling her to “harass and terrorize me…she spread rumors that I had a boyfriend who secretly came to visit me.” In fact, Fatima enlisted relatives in an elaborate scheme to entrap Karin and to report all such concocted suspicious doings to Satam. But here is the most evil thing that Fatima did. Because Mimi, their housemaid, was helpful to Karin, Fatima reported Mimi to the mutawa for “fornication.” The fact that this was totally untrue made no difference. Once Mimi was arrested, Prince Salman signed her death warrant. Satam could do nothing to reverse this decree. Thus, the following Friday, after prayers, the appropriate verses from the Qu’ran having been read, Mimi was stoned to death. The two Indian men she was accused of “fornicating” with (shopkeepers, where Mimi was shopping for Karin) each received one hundred lashes.

POPSIs “Deep Cool” – the Mole (Leaker) Within Hadley CRU ~ 7.27.2009 But most importantly this will not deter Steve in his FOI requests, he writes: And by the way, just because I’ve got a version of the data doesn’t mean that I’m going to give up trying to get the data through FOI. Quite the opposite. Indeed. Better to get it through the front door. I mentioned to Steve this morning via email that in addition to verifying the source, I was able to come up with a photo of the “anonymous” mole in CRU. I’ve sent him a copy. Stay tuned. h/t to commenter John S. at Climate Audit for the “Deep Cool” moniker. Anthony Watts WUWT blog "Deep Cool" http://bit.ly/r3c99

POPSAn Urge To Help "Indeed, it is in our biological nature, not our political institutions, that we should put our trust. I’d argue that biology constitutes our greatest hope. One can only shudder at the thought that the humaneness of our societies would depend on the whims of politics, culture or religion. The roots of human cooperation may lie in human aggression. We are selfish by nature, yet also follow rules requiring us to be nice to others. “That’s why we have moral dilemmas,” Dr. Tomasello said, “because we are both selfish and altruistic at the same time.”

POPSDecember 7, 1941: Day of Deceit--FDR and Pearl Harbor FDR deliberately set up a plan to provoke Japan into attacking the US Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor (where they sat as ducks in this new forward position, resisted by Naval commanders for that very reason), in order to force reluctant Americans into war with Germany. Throughout 1941, FDR implemented the remaining seven provocations . He then gauged Japanese reaction through intercepted and decoded communications intelligence originated by Japan’s diplomatic and military leaders. The island nation’s militarists used the provocations to seize control of Japan and organized their military forces for war against the U.S., Great Britain, and the Netherlands. The centerpiece – the Pearl Harbor attack – was leaked to the U.S. in January 1941. During the next 11 months, the White House followed the Japanese war plans through the intercepted and decoded diplomatic and military communications intelligence.

POPSThe real threat to "traditional" marriage: heterosexual couples who don't think the way they're supposed to The money quote: "There is a greater expectation that women will work, men will be more involved with their children, and household duties will be more evenly shared... In essence, straight couples are 'queering' heterosexual marriage... If neither partner conforms to his or her 'unique role,' heterosexual marriage starts to look like its same-sex counterpart and illustrates that those 'unique' gendered roles aren't as unique as the bishops claim they are. If in a heterosexual marriage a man can provide nurturing and emotional sensitivity and a woman can provide leadership and effective decision-making skills, could they not bring these traits to a same-sex marriage?"

POPSLaugh! No man who has once heartily and wholly laughed can be altogether irreclaimably bad. You can't deny laughter; when it comes, it plops down in your favorite chair and stays as long as it wants. With the fearful strain that is on me night and day, if I did not laugh I should die. Laughter on one's lips is a sign that the person down deep has a pretty good grasp of life. Laughter is the sensation of feeling good all over and showing it principally in one place. Laughing is one of my MOST favourite things to do, no doubt about it. :D

POPSAn Inconvenient Truth: "cherry-picked" Data "One of the common failings among honorable people is a failure to appreciate how thoroughly dishonorable some other people can be, and how dangerous it is to trust them." -- Thomas Sowell Protestations to the contrary notwithstanding, exchanges about "the trick of adding in the real temps to each series…to hid the decline (in temperature)," is way egregious. Professor Phil Jones, head of the Climate Research Unit and professor Michael E. Mann at Penn State are now tap dancing. Mann, in an effort to defend the indefensible, told the New York Times, "scientists often use the word ‘trick’ to refer to a good way to solve a problem ‘and not something secret.’ Yeah…right! This scandal is scientific fraud of epic proportions. Conspiracy Collusion Illegal destruction of embarrassing data Organized resistance to disclosure Manipulation of data Private acknowledgment of flaws Sick.

POPSFighting Over Shrinking Resources The photograph is of a Turkana woman in Northern Keyna sitting by a goat the dry spell has forced her to kill and sell. POPSBrian Froud: Portrait Painter Of Faery More from the site: Brian's deep involvement with folklore and myth began during his art–student days, when he came across a book by Arthur Rackham in his college library. This master illustrator evoked the wonder of childhood with fey and richly animate landscapes, re–awakening Brian's interest in fairy tales and their imagery. He began to study the folklore of Britain, and then the tales of other lands — fascinated by the ways the magical traditions in all cultures shared common roots. When he left college, he spent five years working in the field of commercial illustration in London, but he continued to paint mythic images and to develop a distinctive style of his own. In the mid–Seventies, Brian's early mythic art was published in Once Upon a Time (a survey of modern English illustration) and collected in The Land of Froud, both from David Larkin's Peacock Press.
