Burj Dubai, The First Superscraper
merrie
by merrie  Today 6:42 AM    2
Dubai was forced to swallow its pride today and rename the world's tallest building after the ruler of Abu Dhabi " the neighbouring emirate that saved the city-state from financial collapse. The humiliating announcement was made by Dubai’s ruler at the dazzling launch of the $1.5 billion ( 930 million) Burj Dubai, which will now be known as Burj Khalifa, in honour of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates. The opening ceremony for the Burj was marked by a dazzling fireworks display that wreathed the tower in stars and smoke. The final height of the tower, which has been shrouded in secrecy, was also revealed to be 2,717ft (828 metres). But the launch, which was intended to be the crowning glory of the emirate's emergence on to the world stage, exposed the reality that Dubai’s achievements are no longer its own while Abu Dhabi is picking up the cheque. In the past 12 months Dubai has witnessed the collapse of its

chip away at the fortress walls of secrecy about temperature data, Terence Corcoran (http://bit.ly/7wwlwo) refers to the second leg of the IPCC thesis - that is after the physical science was supposedly settled. This focused on social and economic solutions to the supposed global warming problem, and required wider scientific expertise to formulate and validate models whose complexities and unknowns rivalled those of trying to predict the weather decades hence. Only four scenarios were developed, called A1, B1, A2, and B2. In the 1998 draft, the A1 scenario is called the Golden Economic Age. It describes a period of “rapid and successful economic development,” brought on by the economic structures that have been successful in the past: free markets, global free trade, innovation. “Free trade enables each region to access knowledge, technology, and capital to best deploy its respective comparative economic and human advantages.”

We Still Have To Be Afraid, Heck of A Job, Barry
merrie
by merrie  12-30-2009    5
Even before a Nigerian with Al Qaeda links tried to blow up a Northwest Airlines jet headed to Detroit, travelers could see we had made no progress toward a technologically wondrous Philip K. Dick universe. We seemed to still be behind the curve and reactive, patting down grannies and 5-year-olds, confiscating snow globes and lip glosses. Instead of modernity, we have airports where security is so retro that taking away pillows and blankies and bathroom breaks counts as a great leap forward. If we can’t catch a Nigerian with a powerful explosive powder in his oddly feminine-looking underpants and a syringe full of acid, a man whose own father had alerted the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, a traveler whose ticket was paid for in cash and who didn’t check bags, whose visa renewal had been denied by the British, who had studied Arabic in Al Qaeda sanctuary Yemen, whose name was on a counterterrorism watch list, who can we catch?

Obama Moves To Curb Federal Secrets, Encourage Declassification

"Everything will depend on implementation," said Steven Aftergood, director of the Project on Government Secrecy at the Federation of American Scientists. But the order "has tremendous potential to reduce the level of secrecy throughout the government." In a memo to agency heads, Obama said he expects that the order will produce "measurable progress" toward greater openness in government while also protecting the nation's most important secrets.

The Rich Rule Over The Poor
debbyski
by debbyski  12-21-2009    4
The rich rule over the poor, And the borrower is the slave of the lender. (Proverbs 22:7 ESV) And so it goes. King George and his band of bandits got us into this mess with conservatives cheering him along every step of the way while he created a mountain of new federal debt, the largest contributors to which were Bush's tax breaks for the rich. Their hero of the hour shamelessly exploited 9/11, fear and the "war on terror" as a pretext to take the ax to civil liberties and to shroud their policies and actions in secrecy. So don't cry me a river now and cloak it with a biblical quote. You are the ones who wanted to mythify Bush as a great leader--pull your crap out on someone else who is idiotic enough to believe in it, but don't pretend you can cash in to God's love by supporting benefits that go to the wealthiest of Americans and contradict the message of Jesus of serving the poor. It's disgusting and so are you.

with the expectations of the sponsors. Like the royal favourites of mediaeval times, they soar in the air on a zephyr of preferment, only to get too close to the sun and plunge to earth. Which brings us to: Secrecy In the security of powerful patronage some of the new brigade began to think that they were above not only the procedures of science, but of all other academic disciplines as well. In the case of the notorious Hockey Stick, for example, they claimed that knowledge from history, art, literature, archaeology etc. was all wrong and that their computer manipulation of such tenuous data as tree rings established that the Little Ice Age and the Mediaeval Warm Period never happened. The most powerful patrons of all, the UN, seized on the results and made them the main feature of one of their apocalyptic IPCC reports on the coming climate disaster. One of the first tests of any scientific work is to pose the question “Can the results be reproduced?”

Spy agencies foil Obama plan for transparency
sahara
by sahara  11-30-2009
But now Obama finds himself in the awkward position of extending the secrecy, despite his repeated pledges of greater transparency, because his administration has been unable to prod spy agencies into conformance. Some of the agencies have thrown up roadblocks to disclosure, engaged in turf battles over how documents should be evaluated, and have reviewed only a fraction of the material to determine whether releasing them would jeopardize national security. In the face of these complications, the White House has given the agencies a commitment that they will get an extension beyond Dec. 31 of an undetermined length - possibly years, said the administration officials, who spoke on the condition they not be identified discussing internal deliberations. It will be the third such extension: Clinton granted one in 2000 and Bush granted one in 2003. The documents, dating from World War II to the early 1980s, cover the gamut of foreign relations, intelligence activities, and military..

Portrait of a Sociopath

The world’s most successful investment bank likes to hide behind the tidal wave of money that it generates and sends crashing over Manhattan, the City of London and most of the world’s other financial capitals. But now the dark knights of banking are being forced, blinking, into the cold light of day. The public, politicians and the press blame bankers’ reckless trading for the credit crunch and, as the most successful bank still standing, Goldman is their prime target. Here, politicians and commentators compete to denounce Goldman in ever more robust terms — "robber barons", "economic vandals", "vulture capitalists". Vince Cable, the Lib Dem Treasury spokesman, contrasts the bank’s recent record results — profits of $3.2 billion in the last quarter alone — and its planned bumper bonus payments with what has happened to ordinary people’s jobs and incomes in 2009.

Obama raise drone attacks

by papananook  10-20-2009    1
The obscenity of this policy is seldom mentioned. " the drone attacks have backfired. As he told The New Yorker, "Every one of these dead non-combatants represents an alienated family, a new revenge feud, and more recruits for a militant movement that has grown exponentially even as drone strikes have increased." And because of the C.I.A. program's secrecy, Mayer writes, "there is no visible system of accountability in place, despite the fact that the agency has killed many civilians inside a politically fragile, nuclear-armed country with which the U.S. is not at war." The New Yorker further reports the Obama Administration has also expanded the sphere of authorized drone assaults in Afghanistan. An August Senate Foreign Relations Committee report said the Pentagon's list of approved terrorist targets held 367 names and included some 50 Afghan drug lords "who are suspected of giving money to help finance the Taliban," Mayer reports. She quotes the Senate report as stating, "The

How to avoid the GOP's mistakes during the Bush years?

All one has to do is act like a citizen first, not a party apparatchik or fan club devotee, which means nothing more than this: (1) If Obama takes action or makes a decision that you think is good and constructive, say so and give him credit; (2) If Obama takes action or makes a decision that you think is bad, wrong and/or destructive, say so and criticize him for it; (3) If there were things you claimed to find so horrible and wrong when Bush did them (indefinite detention, denial of habeas corpus, renditions, state secrets, endless wars, military commissions, compulsive secrecy), and Obama does them, apply the same standards. As Bob Herbert put it rather simply: "Policies that were wrong under George W. Bush are no less wrong because Barack Obama is in the White House."

Like a massive nuclear propaganda super spin bomb all news today is about the revelation of a second nuclear enrichment power plant in Iran. This "revelation," started 4 days ago when Iran told the world about it. The plant is not operational yet. But rather quickly, Britian, USA, France, Israel, etc. are acting and making statements like They Revealed this discovery. They are also acting like they discover a nuclear bomb factory instead of being told about a non-operational nuclear power facility. !? It's quite a massive propaganda blitz, well-timed, in the midst of the UN meeting, in the midst of the G-20 meeting, shortly before a meeting of Western Powers and Russia,China to discuss sanctions on Iran. And...the "secret," of Israel having nuke weapons and never telling the IAEA or anybody about what it's doing still is apparently forbidden to mention. It truly sounds like a major move, a lead up to starting a war. If it get's "fixed," in people's mind that Ira

Culture of secrecy and deception
sahara
by sahara  7-17-2008    1
US taxpayers are required to report all foreign financial accounts if their total value exceeds $10,000 at any point during a given year, prosecutors said. Failure to report the accounts can result in a penalty of up to 50 percent of the amount in the accounts. The report states that in some instances, UBS declined to report accounts to the IRS when clients opened them in the names of offshore corporations, trusts, foundations or other entities, even if the bank knew the true beneficial owners were US taxpayers. In Liechtenstein, the report said the royal family's LGT Group contributed to a "culture of secrecy and deception" that enabled clients to "evade US taxes, dodge creditors, and ignore court orders."

Obama White House Has Secret Plan To Harvest Personal Data From Social Networking Websites

Other troubling issues include: extremely broad secrecy terms preventing the vendor from disclosing to the public or the media what information is being captured and archived (page 7, “Restriction Against Disclosure”) wholesale capturing of comments by non-White House staff on publicly accessible sites capturing of content of any type (text, graphics, audio, or video) capturing of comments by both Obama critics and supporters, with no restriction as to how the White House would use the information. ] This is the third controversy involving the White House internet operations in less than a month. First, Obama’s New Media operation asked supporters to send information about critics of the White House health care effort to a White House email. This provoked a storm of criticism and the White House retreated. Then large number of people complained of getting email spam from the White House supporting the President’s health care position.

If Obama Fails, It's Not His Fault
merrie
by merrie  8-27-2009    3
If it doesn’t, President Obama will have been defeated. But it’s the party, not the president, that will have failed. Rhetorical question: If Obama's not running the Demokrat party, who is??? 3. Obama is bogged down because he has been working so hard to accommodate Republicans. 4. Obama is failing because he's too nice. From The LA Times, words of encouragement from Rep. Maxine Waters Twenty-seven days after taking office, Obama abandoned his short-lived commitment to transparency and bipartisanship and signed his ill-conceived stimulus bill into law. Since that very turbulent moment, Americans have developed persistent doubts about Obama's judgement and leadership strategy. And in the process they have rediscovered their self-confidence. The Wall Street Journal explains: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203706604574370301468452872.html
