Twitter Talks Data With Microsoft, Google — All Things Digital
merrie
by merrie  10-8-2009    2
All this without tarnishing the noisy service as a shill, because it lets you listen to only what you want. The deals would be nonexclusive and may not happen, All Things Digital reports " which only feeds the casual cred Twitter has been cultivating, taking its time about coming up with a business model that produces operating revenue, while it rakes in VC money at a level that values the three-year-old private company at about $1 billion. The “Let them do it” philosophy works like a charm for Twitter, whose content comes from the general public and whose best interfaces come from third-party developers making full use of the company’s freely available API. Along with the recently announced “lists” initiative, Twitter seems to be carefully setting the table so that partners can leverage its data " and the way it is organized " to enter new markets, while it sits back and maintains a server farm.

Sponsored search results lead to malware
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  10-8-2009
If you're not sure, verify the URL. Microsoft and Google have large payrolls, but the search giants don't employ literal armies to review ad submissions. If you're at all suspicious of an ad's legitimacy, check the URL via a service such as hpHosts, which tracks domain names that researchers have reported as malicious. Help vendors by reporting malicious advertisers. To report bogus ads on Google, e-mail security at google.com. This is likely to be more effective than reporting the site via the search giant's online form. If you discover malware purveyors advertising in Bing's results, e-mail secure at microsoft.com. Yahoo, however, offers only a Security Phishing Report Form.

'Miracle on the Hudson' Pilot Capt. Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger to Return to N.Y., Cockpit Thursday
merrie
by merrie  10-1-2009    2
He has also been given a spot on US Airways's flight operations safety management team. Sullenberger, 58, had taken a break from flying to write an autobiography and required catch-up training before he could get back in the cockpit. Despite being the nation's most celebrated and trusted pilot, Sullenberger had to go back to ground school, take some new simulator training and fly with a captain from the training department. "The months since January 15 have been very full, and my family and I have had some unforgettable experiences," Sullenberger said in a statement. "However, I have missed working with my colleagues at US Airways and I am eager to get back in the cockpit with my fellow pilots in the months ahead." "Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters," Sullenberger's engaging account of his life and the crash - in which his calm Gary Cooper-esque personality shines - comes out in October. "We welcome Capt. Sullenberger back to work and

This is an example of drawing inferences from self signifying data. The problem with this one is that we can never know if it is true, since we won't be here if it is. We will know if it is false, though.

Science of Search: How to Make Out, or Levitate
haraya
by haraya  7-31-2007    1
How-to searches also reveal our aspirations. Comprising 12% of the instructional searches were those questions geared towards self improvement: how to "lose weight," "gain weight," "make money," and, for those truly in search of instant gratification, "make money fast." On the darker side, over 9.5% of the searches were for illicit or illegal activities, with marijuana use figuring high on the list ("how to grow marijuana," "grow pot," "grow weed") but also some very concerning questions: "how to commit suicide," "how to make meth," even "how to make a bomb." We apparently feel comfortable enough with our computers and the Internet to query just about anything. Search continues to grow in importance as we sift through the mountain of information available to us. As the growth of "how to" searches increases, its clear that we are turning to search engines as sources of knowledge and insight into getting things done.

Scroogle: An introduction and micro-review
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  6-23-2009
As mentioned in a previous rant, here it is in the flesh. every person I have turned on to this has continued to use it, and with good cause. Its most obvious advantages are that it is simplistic and unbiased. Unlike serach engines from the Google family where the highest bidders appear on the first page. But it doesn't stop there, this is truly anonomous searching and surfing that to a large extent ignore ads, has multi-browser support (support for safari is near completion if not already done) and has a toggle button for when encryption is required. As with all open source stuff if you like it then support it... or don't.

Scroogle review on Cnet.com
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  8-3-2009
"Over 130,000 searches per day are made through the Scroogle site, 10 percent of which use SSL. In an e-mail conversation, Daniel told me that his "ultimate goal is for Scroogle to survive long enough so that the public sector gets the idea that all major search engines should be treated like public utilities." Daniel Brandt seems like a great guy. He's doing this for free--and accepts tax deductible donations on the Scroogle site. However, for users who don't trust Daniel's claims, they may wish to use the anonymizing TOR proxy in parallel with Scroogle. What Daniel's site shows, is that privacy preserving search is possible. While Scroogle doesn't show any ads, if Google offered this service, they could still make a buck on it. Imagine that--making money, while not being evil. Disclosure: I'm paid as a technology policy fellow by the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a public interest group that has repeatedly criticized Google for its privacy policies. Furthermore, I i

INTERNET PSEUDO QUOTES
ammcc
by ammcc  8-13-2009    1
The pseudo-quote is therefore without authenticity or meaning, and is just another of those political slogans which are used not as an assistance to, but as a substitute for real thought. It is not a deep truth, although it is constantly treated as one. Burke incidentally hated such things. He thought that cheap political slogans, or ‘maxims’ as he called them, enabled politicians to invoke principles of expediency, so they could pursue their own selfish interests instead of fulfilling their obligations to country, party and people. To him they were quite distinct from the deeps truths, or as he calls them here, ‘first principles’, (see next comment)
