POPSUSS New York: "Strength Forged Through Sacrifice. Never Forget." At the prow - prominent and proud like the twin towers themselves - is a 19-foot-long bow stem, forged from 7.5 tons of Trade Center steel. Up from its homeport in Norfolk, Va., the ship will begin its New York odyssey with entry into the harbor about 7:30 this morning. At 8, there will be a 21-gun salute at Ground Zero. Then the New York will sail up the Hudson to the George Washington Bridge, turn around about 9:30 and dock at Pier 88, near 48th St. Along the route, thousands of New Yorkers are expected to greet their namesake. Prominent will be cops, firefighters and other responders, people who survived the conflagration and survivors of those who did not - brave souls to whom the ship is a floating memorial. They will have exclusive onboard visiting hours, a private reception and tickets to the shipboard commissioning ceremony Saturday.

This makes small, battery-powered LED "blinkies" great as taillights, but marginal as headlights. A better choice is a halogen system. For city riding, it's more important to point it up, where it shines in drivers' eyes, so they see you, rather than down onto the road, which is already illuminated by streetlights and house lights. Look for something that puts out at least ten watts.

Or, rather, it sounds like everything that's in the news. These days, altruism itself is proclaimed at the top of the altruist's lungs. Certainly it's of interest to the self to be a celebrity. Bob Geldof has found a way to remain one. But for most of history, wisdom, beliefs, and mores demanded subjugation of ego, bridling of aspiration, and sacrifice of self (and, per Abraham with Isaac, of family members, if you could catch them). Beginning with a New Orleans style farewell, the ship passed through Gretna and was met by firefighters and a police honor guard who sowed their honor and respect to those who died heroically on 9/11. As the ship continues to make its way to New York, she will be greeted by those who choose to remember and honor the nearly 5,000 who tragically lost their lives on September 11, 2001. POPSFinally a Consumer Fights Back.
Although, I don’t relate to this woman's belief system, I DO relate to her as a consumer. All of us who have struggled with credit card debt and job losses know the frustrations of climbing a greased pole. The banks have been putting the screws to us for a long time. As a child, I would hear adults talking about LOAN SHARKS. On TV there were stories of bones being broken for non-payment by such LOAN SHARKS who charged exorbitant interest fees. I was glad to find out, this technique was illegal and US banks could never resort to such tactics to coerce payment. In adulthood, I learned quickly, that there were legal procedures of torture, no physical bone breaking but just as vexing. In Capitalism, the torture is mental and longer lasting. Today’s banks use teaser loans to lure us, once we’re captured by their come-ons they pounce and raise the APR's so high, that there is no escape from debt. I salute this lady who didn't take it lying down! She threw a few punches back!

POPSThe REAL "Inconvenient Truth": Cell Phones and Bee Colony Collapse
Honey bees are in effect saying, "Can you hear us now?" The consequences of inaction on this are real and enormous. But unlike oil, coal or "carbon emissions", not even Al Gore or Obama will advocate giving up or curbing cell phones or towers, even though the hard facts on this are much more threatening to agriculture, and by consequence human life, the economy of foods, and the entire eco-system than the mythical "global warming" doomsday scenerio. Cell phones are America's and the world's unnecessary CONVENIENCE that apparently are not even being debated by the Climate people, willing to sacrifice the pollination of food crops by honey bees for cell chat. The buzz is real, but governments are not moving to regulate, and are likely too afraid of consumers who do not care about consequences any more than those who throw fast food trash out the window of their cars. There is also hard evidence of radiation from cell phones directly damaging human health.

POPSPrime Minister Brown Admits EU Treaty Is Finished Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany’s foreign minister, went further, stating that the Lisbon treaty provisions, which include the creation of a permanent EU president and the widespread abolition of national vetoes, could be implemented without Ireland. “Ireland for a period of time could leave the way free for the integration of the other 26 member states,” he said. In public, British ministers are insisting that a solution to the impasse can still be found. Jim Murphy, the Europe minister, yesterday told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Only those who previously wished to dance on the grave of this treaty, even before the Irish referendum, are declaring it dead.” However, at this week’s Brussels summit, Brown will refuse to agree to anything that could leave the Irish out in the cold, according to aides. The only EU leader so far to admit that the treaty is dead is Vaclav Klaus, the Czech president, who declared the entire project “finished”.
