Boston PD Officer Barrett G-O-N-E, Says Mayor Thomas Menino
merrie
by merrie  8-6-2009    3
But city lawyers cited Menino’s former Gotham counterpart, ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who triumphed in court when a cop sued after he was fired for racist behavior. According to reports at the time, Joseph Locurto donned blackface and joined others on the float who hurled watermelon slices at the crowd and re-enacted the brutal murder of James Byrd Jr., a black man dragged to death by white men months earlier. Separately, city lawyers said Barrett’s disciplinary hearing would not be held this week, according to court documents. Barrett’s attorney had raised concerns the cop, who is on paid administrative leave, would be fired for filing the lawsuit.

The Reign of Lame Falls Mainly on McCain
merrie
by merrie  11-6-2008    11
The winner is Obama because now he can start hanging out in public with Bill Ayers and Rev. Jeremiah Wright again. John McCain is a winner because he can resume buying more houses. And for only the second time in her adult life, Michelle Obama was proud of her country. And we're all winners because we will never again have to hear McCain say, "my friends." After Bill Clinton won the 1992 presidential election, Hillary Clinton immediately announced that, henceforth, she would be known as "Hillary Rodham Clinton." So maybe Obama can now become B. Hussein Obama, his rightful name. For now, we have a new president-elect. In the spirit of reaching across the aisle, we owe it to the Democrats to show their president the exact same kind of respect and loyalty that they have shown our recent Republican president. Starting tomorrow, if not sooner.

Top 10 New World-Changing Innovations of the Year
einbar
by einbar  10-21-2008
2008 Breakthrough Awards /// The Innovators The early 20th century produced a breathtaking succession of innovations—the Wright Flyer, the Model T, the Panama Canal. It was a golden age of engineering. A century hence, observers may well look back at our era in much the same way: Cars are being reimagined from the wheels up. Advances in solar energy show the way past fossil fuels. And space probes explore planets that could become our future homes. These pages salute the innovators who are inventing the future. Welcome to the new golden age.

cont.--virtue, and vision with qualities we are ashamed to face: anger, fear, revenge, violence, selfishness, and suspicion of 'the other.' For millions of Americans, Obama triggers those feelings, but they don't want to express them. He is calling for us to reach for our higher selves, and frankly, that stirs up hidden reactions of an unsavory kind. (Just to be perfectly clear, I am not making a verbal play out of the fact that Sen. Obama is black. The shadow is a metaphor widely in use before his arrival on the scene.) I recognize that psychological analysis of politics is usually not welcome by the public, but I believe such a perspective can be helpful here to understand Palinʼs message. In her acceptance speech Gov. Palin sent a rousing call to those who want to celebrate their resistance to change and a higher vision. Read the rest, pls, for details...

Republicans Spread Message of Democrats’ Disunity
merrie
by merrie  8-25-2008
Because of the Republican offensive, senior advisers to Obama and Clinton were furiously trying to extinguish constant reports of party unrest Monday morning before the convention had even officially begun. The RNC and the McCain campaign have already launched an ad entitled "Debra" that features one such disaffected Clinton supporter who says she is supporting McCain. In the ad, Wisconsin delegate Debra Bartosevich says that the New York senator has "the experience and the judgment to be president." "Now, in a first for me, I'm supporting a Republican, John McCain," Bartosevich says. “I respect his maverick and independent streak, and now he's the one with the experience and judgment. A lot of Democrats will vote McCain. It's OK, really." Monday night, the GOP was hosting a "Happy Hour for Hillary" in downtown Denver, and earlier in the day, the Republicans released their first of the week's daily "Not Ready '08" memos — this one titled "A Party Divided."

This disabled Vietnam veteran paratrooper with three Purple Hearts is no longer a man without a country. Wednesday, 40 years after limping home from Vietnam, Rudy Thomas, 64, a Trinidadian immigrant, took the Oath of Citizenship in the Brooklyn Federal Courthouse. Now he is an official American hero. 'For the last 40 years I thought of myself as a proud American,' Thomas was saying yesterday, waiting in the large courtroom on the 2nd floor with 250 new citizenship applicants from 40 countries to be sworn in by Federal Judge Nina Gershon. 'I came home. My discharge papers said I was an American citizen. For the past 30 years I worked as a counselor at the State Department of Veteran's Affairs. My first American-born son, Rudy Jr., became a New York City police officer. He was shot dead on the Fourth of July in 1993...'

3 Myths About Offshore Drilling

Now that I have gained my bearing back I feel that the least the oil companies could do is put a little bit of money back in our pockets. The following proposals are a few ideas I have come up with. A modest 80% tax on all oil pumped out of Iraq to be paid back to the American taxpayer for our continued support. Establishment of $1 million dollar trust funds for all families of soldiers killed in Iraq. A guaranteed donation each year of all profits in Iraq to the Department of Veterans Affairs to cover PTSD and war related illness. Feel free to add your own proposal.

Ron Paul Refuses to Endorse McCain, Exposes Democrats' Hypocrisy
blueridge
by blueridge  5-11-2008    2
Ron Paul is still contending upon principle and has not dropped out, and instead has released a best-selling book called "Revolution" to restore government to the Constitution. He essentially says that McCain is a RINO--republican in name only--and refuses to endorse him. Yet Rudy, Romney, Fred (also RINOs) and the Party all endorse him. Paul points out that there is really little choice to restore Constitutional government, fiscal conservative spending, civil liberties, or non-interventionist foreign policy among the soon current nominee leaders. He points out the hypocrisy of Hillary and Obama on the war, while saying that McCain is at least honest about his policy, bad as that policy is.
