POPSObama's long six months
Obama sold the country a false prospectus of easy, obvious, and almost painless change. The usual six honeymoon months have elapsed, and the country is nearly through rejoicing at the consolation that they have a president whom foreigners are unlikely to throw shoes at, and who speaks in sentences. But his own Environmental Protection Agency director acknowledges that his cap-and-trade bill will have no effect on the climate, and it will neither raise revenue nor reduce carbon use. It must be replaced with a straight carbon tax of bearable impact coupled with sensible conservation, and alternate-energy-source and oil-exploration incentives. The bill that limped through the House of Representatives was a Rube Goldberg contraption of Al Gore myths and Congressional vote-buying boondoggles. Its adoption would be a disaster. The president’s claim of putting millions of Americans to work making wind-mills and solar panels is a fable that extends the frontiers of quixotry.

POPSPythagora Switch: Intelligent Contraptions PythagoraSwitch (ピタゴラスイッチ, Pitagora Suitchi) is a Japanese educational television program... The Rube Goldberg devices that appear during the beginning, ending, and between each corner (segment) are called Pythagorean Device (ピタゴラ装置, Pitagora Sōchi). The main focus of the program is a puppet show, but the subject is mainly advanced by the small corners . World phenomena, principles, characteristics, and the like are introduced in an entertaining way... Often Switch (スイッチ, Suitchi) and Mechanism (しくみ, Shikumi) appear on the show to... form new interests and new information. The flags that show up at the end of each device-cycle can be annoying, especially if you don't understand what's written. However, the machines are well-crafted and very entertaining.

POPSCool Mechnical Machines from Japan Check this video out. These machines are simple in what they used, but really genius in the design. I am working to make a simple one with my 3 and 4 year old sons to teach them some simple mechanical engineering. They loved watching the video clip. If anyone reads Japanese and knows what the messages are at the end of each machine - please post.
