How I Set Up a Home File Server For Free - A Review of FreeNAS
merrie
by merrie  Yesterday 6:53 PM    1
Installation and setup: To set up FreeNAS as a home file server, you must make sure you have all the proper hardware first. This means you need a multiple port router, or switch to connect your file server to as well as a network cable for the server. For the actual server, you will need a PC with at least one hard drive (I started with 2) and a CD-ROM drive. The setup process was very easy. I downloaded the FreeNAS ISO file and created a Live CD which I inserted into my old PC. If I wanted to, I could started using it as a file server right there (by simply changing the IP address of the server), but I wanted something that I could use in the long term... something that could auto restart with no user intervention in the event of a power failure. This meant installing it to the hard drive. FreeNAS setup made this easy to do. I simply selected which hard drive to install to, and that was it. After a reboot, I had to set up the network interface

Hackers Target Wrong Guy
neochonetes
by neochonetes  2-1-2008
This couple probably represents the majority of computer users, and this news clip shows what can happen if you don't protect your router, as well as your computer. What angers me about this whole situtation is that this gives ammunition to those who want to control the internet and create LEVELS for those who can afford it...the level will be very protected. I also never understood how a public entity can sue people for negative press.

WiFi Turns Internet Into Hideout For Criminals
Sorgalim
by Sorgalim  2-12-2007    2
These days, the Internet is as indispensable to an officer's arsenal as his gun and handcuffs. Indeed, a growing number of officers are being assigned to patrol cyberspace..."Technology just makes the park no longer the only place where the pervert goes," West said. The problem is going to get worse, authorities said. Every day, more homes, businesses and entire jurisdictions are outfitted with wireless networks, creating an almost seamless patchwork of available Internet connections to anyone with a laptop and the desire to get online.
