Nano Superbug-Killers -Identifies Bacteria That Have Become Resistant to Antibiotics
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  11-17-2008
The drugs to be tested work by latching onto the bacteria and literally ripping its cell wall to pieces, exposing the vulnerable core to destruction by the surrounding environment. When a drug can latch onto the mucopeptide, it bends the cantilever and alters the reflection of the laser. The response to the drug can be observed almost instantly. While this technique only works for surface-latching antibiotics (by no means the only antibiotic mechanism), Professor McKendry and colleagues are already planning an upgrade where entire bacterial cells will be pinned to the nano-lever and stretched by drugs.

When All Else Fails, Cry "Racism!"
kareval
by kareval  9-19-2009    2
We are outraged because the Obama administration wants to utterly transform America by ripping the Constitution to shreds. We are outraged that he has nationalized the auto industry and financial institutions. We are outraged at the most despicable congress of all time and we don't see a lot of Blacks there. It's not race America is concerned about; it's radical leftism that has taken over Washington D.C. That's why America is outraged! Sorry, the racist charge is illegitimate. It doesn't hold water and only serves to prove the vacuity and fallacy of left-wing ideology.

Convergent evolution
Aribeth
by Aribeth  9-14-2009
The huge fossil teeth of megalodon had been known for centuries and were once believed to be the fossilized tongues of dragons. Agassiz, noting that great white shark teeth and the fossil megalodon teeth were both serrated, lumped megalodon into the same genus, Carcharodon, (from the Greek karcharos, meaning sharp or jagged, and odous, meaning tooth). Agassiz was not, however, making an evolutionary judgment. In 1835, a young Charles Darwin was just then visiting the Galapagos Islands. There would be no theory of evolutionary descent for nearly 25 years. In fact, the brilliant Agassiz, who later became a professor at Harvard and the leading figure of natural history in the United States, forever resisted Darwin’s revolutionary ideas. Rejecting biological evolution, Agassiz defined species as a “thought of God.” His classification scheme signified nothing about shark origins. But over the next century, the idea that great whites evolved from megalodon took hold. << more at the

Shredding the clunkers
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  8-9-2009    3
Clunker FAIL - throws the poor under the bus. It artificially inflates the value of all used cars — owners will find themselves asking “do I want to try to sell this perfectly-good car for at least $5,000 to someone who needs it, or should I let it get destroyed for a $4,500 credit?” In essence, the bill will boost the minimum value of many used cars to $4,500 — out of the reach of many people in need of transportation. But that won’t matter. We’ll have gotten a bunch of “gas guzzlers” off the road, preventing them from consuming valuable resources and polluting our air. As for the poor… ? Why do I need to ask that question? Aren't the Democrats the party the best serves the needs of the common man, ya know, Joe Sixpack. Or the common man like Ben Affleck....I forget. When you put environmental concerns and other nonsense ahead of the hard-working American, I find it hard to believe the Democrats are serving the people that they say they so adequately represent.

Obama's Acorn a Criminal Organization
kareval
by kareval  9-25-2009    2
And now he says that the enormous and growing ACORN scandal is not something he is “paying a lot of attention to”? And that the ACORN scandal is “not the biggest issue facing the country”? I beg to differ. I think a national organization that is dedicated to stealth revolution, communism, ripping off the American taxpayer, and subverting free markets, among other insidious traitorous objectives, is of enormous import. What exactly is Obama paying attention to? Nationalizing a perfectly good private healthcare system, the best on the world? Outreach to the ummah (the worldwide global Muslim community)? What is he paying attention to? Mounting a Department of Justice witch hunt, a persecution of CIA agents whose crime was keeping us safe from the worldwide jihad in the immediate aftermath of 9/11? What’s he paying attention to? Ethnically cleansing Israel of the Jewish people? Or facilitating a nuclear Iran? Sanctioning Islamic law there and snuffing out the people marching for fre

Should Marijuana Ban Go Up in Smoke?
citizenbfk

Although this is considered a 'back burner,' issue in the more real world of lying to lead a nation into false wars or the SuperRich & Wall St. speculators ripping off untold trillions the futility and hyprocracy of this always comes around again and again. The prime illegal use of drugs is of prescription drugs. One of the drugs that does the most damage to self and society is booze. The War on Weed is a failure, will always be a failure, and it's main use thus far appears to be to give permission for USA covert wars in Central and South America and put hundreds of thousands of those who might tend to be domestic 'social dissidents,' in jail. Now, too, it's being added to one of the reasons to kill people in Afghanistan; gotta stop them from growing drugs. If anyone is seriously interested in reducing interest in drugs then all drug advertising (pot or pills or booze, etc.) should be banned from TV. If you want to stop drug abuse stop promoting drug use. Try that 'D

'Why did Neanderthals have such big noses?"
cakebelly
by cakebelly  10-28-2008    1
continues The traditional answer has been that Neanderthals have a big nose because they have a big mouth and a wide jaw, useful for ripping apart tough food, says Nathan Holton, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Iowa. "People have tried to explain the Neanderthal face as designed to produce high levels of bite force and trying to explain the rest of a wide nasal breath as part of a larger tend," he says. To put this theory to the test, he and University of Iowa colleague Robert Franciscus, measured facial dimensions in dozens of Neanderthals and humans, ancient and modern. By correlating changes in the size of nose width, the distance between canine teeth, and other features, the researchers could determine whether or not big mouths went with big noses. Holton and Franciscus found a slight link between nose and mouth, but not enough to explain Neanderthal noses. However, another measurement – the degree to which the face juts forward – seemed a better match for n

25%+ of all Pentagon money is unaccounted for
papananook
by papananook  8-10-2008    4
Why Bush & Co. love war. Little known fact: George Herbert Walker, grandfather of George Bush Sr. and George Bush Jr, besides being a major financier to the Nazis along with his son-in-law Prescott Bush, was also appointed supervisor of military contracts by Woodrow Wilson. Interestingly enough, it's much easier to find out details of the family's dealings with the Nazis than it is to uncover the simple, biographical fact that the Bush dynasty has been hardwired into the finances of the Pentagon since Day One. Ripping off the nation via the Pentagon is a four generation old business for this crew. No wonder they're so good at it. 9/11 helped then both cover their tracks and take things to a new level. Wow, that's a pretty good scam for some people...I wonder where all that tax money goes? It's bad enough how they rip us off legally, let alone down the rabbit hole to...?

To drive home his point, Sturtz told me about a study the company did when it was forming: 50 calls were made to shops asking for a price quote on a given repair. Then, a short time later, the calls were made again to the same shops, but this time with women making the queries instead of men. The average price difference was 17 percent higher when women called.

A Soldier's Perspective
davboz
by davboz   10-4-2007    7
Macbeth was discharged from the army before he had even completed basic training, because according to representatives with the U.S. Army, he was either unfit, unsuitable, or both, to serve in the military. It is the anti-war left that needs to be condemned, once again. The anti-war Left keeps getting caught promoting bogus allegations made by "phony soldiers" because the Left is desperate for any allegations that are made which might discredit Operation Iraqi Freedom. They do this for one simple reason – they so hate this war that they are determined to undermine the war effort and hope that America loses so they can play a pathetic and dangerous game of "I told you so."
