Eight of the Most Scenically Breathtaking Natural Springs in the World
pocketfulofsunshine
by pocketfulofsunshine  Yesterday 1:41 PM    2
In the past, hot springs were honored as spiritual sites by Native Americans. These springs originate from deep inside the Earth and are said to cure and aid certain ailments. Springs happen to be quite temperamental considering they can change temperature and dry up at anytime. Remember to respect Mother Nature as she has provided you with an amazing Natural Resource than can sustain life as long as we let it.

World's Oceans: Is It too Late to Save Our Most Precious Resource?
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  Yesterday 6:24 AM
The problem in the Pacific is so severe a humongous plastic-strewn patch floats between California and Hawaii within the North Pacific Gyre. According to the man who first discovered it in 1997, Captain John Moore, this patch is 1 ½ times the size of the contiguous United States and goes to a depth of at least 100 feet. And there is another huge rubbish patch off the coast of Japan.

Debunking 'Truths' About Offshore Drilling
merrie
by merrie  8-13-2008    4
No, the United States cannot drill its way to energy independence. But with the roaring economies of China and India gobbling up oil in the two countries' latter-day industrial revolutions, the United States can no longer afford to turn its back on finding all the sources of fuel necessary to maintain its economy and its standard of living. What's required is a long-term, comprehensive plan that includes wind, solar, geothermal, biofuels and nuclear -- and that acknowledges that oil and gas will be instrumental to the U.S. economy for many years to come.

Welcome Back to the 19th Century
merrie
by merrie  8-13-2008    1
Apologists for Russia can point to lots of mitigating circumstances, starting with the biggest one of Christmas Day 1991, when the hammer-and-sickle flag over the Kremlin went down for the last time, and up went the Russian tricolor. Poof, and a whole empire from the Baltic to Kazakhstan was suddenly gone. Yes, that chilled the Russian soul, and so did Georgia's love affair with the United States. How dare Georgia, the birthplace of Stalin, sidle up to the EU and NATO? In the greater scheme of things, though, Georgia's geopolitical crimes pale against a simple historical truth: 8/8 is payback for 12/25, when the Soviet Empire expired. That, as Mr. Putin has told us, was the "greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century," and ever since he was anointed neo-czar in 2000, he has been working hard, and as time went by ever more ham-handedly, to reverse the verdict of the Cold War -- to regain what Russia had lost. Pelosi Invests In Energy Scheme and Water Grab By T. Boone Pickens
merrie
by merrie  8-12-2008    2
Ken Kramer, director of the Texas Sierra Club said, “Water is a resource, yet in some respects it is a commodity. It’s as essential to human life as air. That puts water in a different class.” Pelosi #dontgo Bombshell: MONEY Money. It would appear that the driving force behind Madam Speaker’s quick and forceful adjournment of Congress is money. According to Michigan Taxes Too Much blog, Madam Speaker has a substantial amount of money invested in Clean Energy Fuels Corporation. Clean Energy Fuels Corporation is a business venture started by none other than T. Boone Pickens. Clean Energy Fuels Corp, stands to gain substantially from the higher prices of gasoline and are even flaunting it on their website. http://dontgomovement.com/2008/08/11/pelosi-dontgo-bombshell-money/

Freeeeeedom! of Information (National Security Archive)
sahara
by sahara  8-7-2008    3
So much information, great site! National Security Archive Electronic Briefing Books provide online access to critical declassified records on issues including U.S. national security, foreign policy, diplomatic and military history, intelligence policy, and more. Updated frequently, the Electronic Briefing Books represent just a small sample of the documents in our published and unpublished collections. A tax-exempt public charity, the Archive receives no U.S. government funding; its budget is supported by publication royalties and donations from foundations and individuals. On March 17, 2000, Long Island University named the National Security Archive as winner of a Special George Polk Award for 1999 for "piercing self-serving veils of government secrecy" and "serving as an essential journalistic resource."

Lord Nelson and Captain Cook Logs Have Cast New Light on Climate Change
merrie
by merrie  8-5-2008    1
Scientists have uncovered a treasure trove of meteorological information contained in the detailed logs kept by those on board the vessels that established Britain's great seafaring traditition including those on Nelsons' Victory and Cook's Endeavour. Many scientists believe that storms are caused by global warming, but these were during the so-called Little Ice Age that affected Europe from about 1600 to 1850. The records also suggest that Europe saw a spell of rapid warming, similar to that experienced today, during the 1730s that must have been caused naturally. "British archives contain more than 100,000 Royal Navy logbooks from around 1670 to 1850 alone," Mr Wheeler said. "They are a stunning resource".

Alaska's Waters Quietly Reopen To Drilling
merrie
by merrie  8-5-2008
The moratorium remained unchanged for more than a decade until Alaskan Sen. Ted Stevens spearheaded a successful effort to suspend the moratorium in 2003. In January 2007, President George Bush lifted Clinton's moratorium on leasing the drilling rights in the Aleutian Basin. The Aleutian Basin is the only shallow-water leasing area currently offered by the Interior Department. Roughly 80% of the area's waters are less than 200 feet deep. The most promising drilling prospects are located in water depths of about 300 feet.

Anyway, the resource is huge, examples abundant, explications very clear and even etymological grounded.

Energy Rhetoric vs Reality
merrie
by merrie  8-3-2008    1
RHETORIC: Oil and natural gas companies are demanding greater access to America’s resources even though they own leases on millions of acres of federal lands that are already open to drilling. REALITY: Just because a lease is not producing oil or natural gas doesn’t mean it’s idle. Companies are actively exploring and developing the majority of their leases, but the entire process takes years and requires many steps, including securing government permits, analyzing seismic data and installing the machinery needed for drilling and production. Many leases prove not to contain enough oil and natural gas to be commercially viable, and companies can’t produce oil and natural gas where it does not exist. REALITY: At a time when we need all the energy we can find, increasing access to domestic sources of oil and natural gas would enhance our energy security. We have enough oil and natural gas resources to power 65 million cars for 60 years and heat 60 million households for 160 years.
