wildcat
by wildcat  3-25-2008    3
Mind expert Allan Snyder of the University of Sydney and director of Centre for the Mind, is certain that all people have these latent super abilities, but only some are able to express them through “malfunctions” of overriding brain functions.

Openning the door for genetic markets
balthazarus
by balthazarus  9-19-2008
 1) The new regulations do not cover cloned animals, most pets or research animals. The FDA has already determined that clones -- genetic replicas -- are safe. Pets and research animals are unlikely to enter the food chain 2) Only one genetically engineered animal is now being sold in the United States, the glow-in-the-dark zebra fish for aquariums. The FDA approved it because it is not eaten and its need for warm water effectively precludes its escape into the wild 3) Technically, it is not the modified animals but the added DNA segments that are considered drugs

Virginia Law hits Hitch hanging balls
pokkets
by pokkets  1-15-2008    3
In Virginia it is now illegal to hang 'representations' of genitalia from vehicles. A father bought about the suit because his daughter asked him to explain two 'representations' of testicles she saw hanging from a trailer hitch. I can think of a few answers, but I haven't seen pictures regarding the accuracy of the replicas. Perhaps he could have said they were round dice, The Judgment called it a safety issue because it may distract drivers. (While they're not being distracted by billboards,GPS, or on the mobile phone.) One question that struck me. How would he explain dogs? Their representations are not always just hanging from the hitch, sometimes they're on active duty. No doubt the girl will find out about sex from her friends. Why do two balls hanging from strings appear to be testicle? It's not as though there aren't a few other choices. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.?

"Spore": The Long Zoom
Kore7
by Kore7  10-10-2006    4
Great article about what looks to be an incredible online, massively-multiplayer game (from the creator of the Sims and SimCity series) where "players" master the entire phenomenon of life; from ecology, to atmospheric science, to anatomy, to evolution, to civilization, to planetary politics, and on to galactic diplomacy. If anyone can pull it off, it’s Will Wright. This is the guy who made the urban planning simulation SimCity into one of the all-time top-selling games in history. There is probably no one alive who has a comparable track record of combining arcane scientific theories and compulsively addictive entertainment.

South Pointing Chariot - Ancient Chinese Invention
Rustee
by Rustee  5-17-2008
It was invented, forgotten, re-invented, and modified many times throughout Chinese history. While none of the historic South Pointing Chariots remain, full sized replicas can be found, along with smaller sized working models (some have even been made with LEGO's).

Good ol' American capitalism at work...
thirstycat
by thirstycat  5-16-2006
On Monday, May 19th, the 10,000 finalists in Google's DaVinci Code Quest received these "limited edition" replicas of the cryptex from the upcoming movie. Within *hours*, no less than 50 were for sale on Ebay. I guess everyone wants a piece of the Da Vinci Code marketing pie :-) (I'm holding on to mine unless the bids start getting into 4 figures :-)

Peace symbol - 50 years on
hayesstw
by hayesstw  3-25-2008
Jerry Horton's now-famous peace symbol is 50 years old. It's first public appearance was at the Aldermaston March in 1958, organised by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament to protest against nuclear weapons. Later it was widened to a general peace symbol, and not simply against nuclear weapons, and has been used by people protesting against wars in general, such as the Vietnam War and the current Iraqi-American War.

Into the next world with a plasma TV
mickfinn
by mickfinn  2-8-2008
Less than 16pc now live on less than a dollar a day, compared to 58 per cent in 1993, although many can still only dream of having a flat screen television in this life. Yet, despite rising inflation, some urban people are thriving. In the build-up to this year’s festival, affluent Vietnamese thronged to new boutiques stocking such capitalist icons as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Cartier.
