The "Noosphere" - Teilhard de Chardin's vision for the Internet
egoldstein
by egoldstein  12-15-2006    4
Is Chardin's vision of the "global network of collective mind" being realized today via the World Wide Web? Can Clipmarks play a role in the creation of a global brain? Great questions to ponder with some red wine on a friday night.

15-ish Things Worth Knowing About Coffee
merrie
by merrie  11-16-2009    13
“Black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel, sweet as love.” That’s the recipe for coffee, according to the utterly French statesman Talleyrand (1754-1838). AFRICAN ORIGINS (Circa A.D. 800) Goats will eat anything. Just ask Kaldi the legendary Ethiopian (map) goatherd. Kaldi, the story goes, noticed his herd dancing from one coffee shrub to another, grazing on the cherry-red berries containing the beans. He copped a few himself and was soon frolicking with his flock. Witnessing Kaldi’s goatly gambol, a monk plucked berries for his brothers. That night they were uncannily alert to divine inspiration. History tells us other Africans of the same era fueled up on protein-rich coffee-and-animal-fat balls"primitive PowerBars"and unwound with wine made from coffee-berry pulp. Coffee later crossed the Red Sea to Arabia, where things really got cooking... ESCAPE FROM ARABIA (Circa 1000 to 1600) Coffee as we know it kicked off in Arabia, where roasted beans

Tea---------- The caffeine content in tea is useful for stimulating alertness, mood and motivation, but is also a rich source of the antioxidant called catechins. Studies suggest that catechins protect the artery walls against the damage that causes heart disease and prevents formation of blood clots. Red Wine or grape juice------------ Grapes provide vitamin C, vitamin B1 and vitamin B6–red grapes also contain powerful phytochemicals that may help decrease risk of cardiovascular disease. . Resveratrol, a polyphenolic stilbene found in the skins of red fruits including grapes has been shown to have anti-oxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activity.

recipe: Clean-out-the-fridge frittata
Lexica
by Lexica  9-27-2009    2
More: This particular frittata got wrapped up and taken to Seward Park for a dinner picnic, which is almost as good an idea as Clean Out the Fridge Frittata. Imagine a dinner party where you invite all the interesting people you don’t see nearly enough, but with the added benefit of not having to clean your house. It’s genius, I tell you. Throw in some blankets, some grapes, salad, bread, cheese, a bottle of wine, and cookies or cupcakes (or in our case, both!) and you have the makings of a very fine evening indeed. IMG_1674 As an extra bonus, when at last it gets dark and you have to pull yourself away from the park and your friends, you’ll have a much cleaner fridge to come home to. I'm my world, that's never a bad thing.

The head of the French military said Thursday that military intervention is no longer a viable option to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear capability. French chief-of-staff Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin said following a speech that that he believes a military operation would be too risky. "It is very difficult to plan a military operation in Iran, because we are not sure in one shot to be able to solve a problem and if you fail in one shot, it is a catastrophe," he said in English. "I don't think at this stage a military option is still available." Georgelin was answering a question after a speech at the Atlantic Council in Washington on France's new relationship with NATO and stressed that the comment was his opinion. Georgelin was in the United States to attend a ceremony Wednesday as French Gen. Stephane Abrial became the first non-American officer to permanently fill a NATO command post.

Food of the Week: Cabbage
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  9-7-2009    4
A few quick serving ideas: Cabbage leaves are a great way to inspire leftovers. Spoon some leftovers such as rice salad or a vegetable mixture onto the center of a cabbage leaf and roll into a neat little package. Bake in medium heat oven until hot. Enjoy your easy and healthy version of stuffed cabbage, a traditional eastern European dish. Braise red cabbage with a chopped apple and red wine. This is a child-friendly dish, since the alcohol (but not the flavor or the flavonoids) will evaporate. Combine shredded red and white cabbage with fresh lemon juice, olive oil, and seasonings such as turmeric, cumin, coriander and black pepper to make coleslaw with an Indian twist. Sauté cabbage and onions and serve over cooked buckwheat for a hardy side dish. Use shredded raw cabbage as a garnish for sandwiches.

Attacking Alzheimer's with Red Wine and Marijuana
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  8-14-2009    18
"Could people smoke marijuana to prevent Alzheimer's disease if the disease is in the family? We're not saying that, but it might actually work," he said. "What we are saying is it appears that a safe, legal substance that mimics those important properties of marijuana can work on receptors in the brain to prevent memory impairments in aging. So that's really hopeful."

Bar review: Americano, San Francisco
Lexica
by Lexica  8-13-2009
More: The vibe: Stylishly comfy, Americano has a distinctly upscale vibe. The crowd: The happy hour scene is packed with co-workers hooting, hollering and some even staggering - all in the name of quitting time. A few hotel guests wander around, looking for a quiet spot to sit, as they observe the alcohol-fueled rituals of San Francisco office workers. Best seat: The lounge, which juts off the dining room, has couches and club chairs perfectly arranged for an after-work gossip session. Killer app: The all-day menu offers plenty of antipasti ($3 each during happy hour; otherwise $7 each or three for $18) that are perfect bar snacks, such as herb-roasted almonds, pork meatballs al forno and artichoke and Brussels sprouts fritti. Three thin-crust pizzas also pair well with the cocktails, especially the pizza Toscana ($14) with salami, mozzarella and crushed tomatoes. I admit\, I can't imagine paying $32 for a glass of wine...

"Mr. Obama has made the White House a beer-friendly place, which is a fine thing. But he can do much better, and could stand to take a lesson or two from F.D.R. I suspect that the desired feelings of brotherly love will flow more freely if the next Beer Summit is a kegger."
