POPSDrug for Longer Life The other drug is a small synthetic chemical that is a thousand times as potent as resveratrol in activating sirtuin and can be given at a much smaller dose. Safety tests in people have just started, with no adverse effects so far. The hope is that activating sirtuins in people would, like a calorically restricted diet in mice, avert degenerative diseases of aging like diabetes, heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s. There is no Food and Drug Administration category for longevity drugs, so if the company is to submit a drug for approval, it needs to be for a specific disease. Nonetheless, longevity is what has motivated the researchers and what makes the drugs potentially so appealing.

POPSPerpetual hunger or a glass of wine? This small clip is from an article about a research study. The study suggests that a compound in red wine (resveratrol) may protect the heart against the effects of aging. I must agree with researchers that going hungry is a rather steep price to pay for longevity. I'm not sure I want to live longer if I have to be desperately pining for food the whole time. But having a glass of red wine? That I can do.

POPS2006 Koonunga Hiils Shiraz Pretty good. Bit my tongue off at first but I also only gave it a 3-5 min breath time. After just a few more minutes it is pretty good. I like a little sweeter but it does have a full flavor. Is a pretty dark thick red.

POPSSpanish Kale and Potato Soup In a heavy soup pot, heat the oils over medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic and stir-fry for several minutes, or until the onion softens. Add a little water as needed to keep from sticking. NOTE: You can also cook the onion and garlic with the oils in a microwave oven (place in a Pyrex covered casserole, or pie dish with another one on top for a lid, for about 10 minutes. This works well if you are doing a bunch of things at once, because you don't need to stir! Add the bay leaf, paprika, cumin and chile flakes and stir for 2 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients, bring to a boil, cover and simmer for anbout 15 minutes,or until everything is tender. Taste for salt and pepper. THE PORTUGUESE VERSION, CALDO VERDE: Omit the turnip and use 4 potatoes instead. Use the sausage option and omit the beans. Use only 1/2 lb. kale.

POPSRed wine's resveratrol may help battle obesity In the cell-based study, they found that resveratrol inhibited the pre-fat cells from increasing and prevented them from converting into mature fat cells. Also, resveratrol hindered fat storage. Most interesting, according to Fischer-Posovszky, was that resveratrol reduced production of certain cytokines (interleukins 6 and 8), substances that may be linked to the development of obesity-related disorders, such as diabetes and clogged coronary arteries. Also, resveratrol stimulated formation of a protein known to decrease the risk of heart attack. Obesity decreases this substance, called adiponectin.

POPSif "leftover wine" isn't an oxymoron to you... :-) I'm enough of a lightweight that I can't drink a bottle by myself, or even finish one over two days. I'm also very sensitive to the flavors of oxidation - ecch! With those factors put together, I've probably tossed out gallons of slightly oxidized leftover wine over the years... Gotta find a better way to deal with it.
