The Story of the White poppy
sahara
by sahara  11-21-2009    1
By the end of the war the guildswomen had learned first hand the extent to which war could profoundly affect and harm their lives. Many of them were the wives, mothers and sisters of men who had been killed. They embarked on an active campaign for peace. By 1933 they were searching for a symbol which could be worn by guildswomen who wanted to show publicly that they were against war and for nonviolence. Someone came up with the idea of a white poppy. Workers from the Co-operative Wholesale Society began making the poppies almost at once. Money from selling them, after the production costs had been paid for, was sent to help war-resisters and conscientious objectors in Europe. The wearing of a white poppy on Armistice Day became a focus for the peace movement, and the Peace Pledge Union took it up in 1936 as 'a definite pledge to peace that war must not happen again'.

The Audacity of Failure: The 4-year presidency of Barack Hoover Obama
foxyarse
by foxyarse  11-16-2009
This clip from Politico tells us more about the people surrounding Obama, than it tells us about Obama himself. Clearly, his chief lieutenants are just as committed to savaging Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security as their GOP counterparts. This is obvious by the way they've handled the fiscal stimulus. Where are the jobs programs, the boost to Green Technology, the massive infrastructure rebuild? Nowhere. Because the industry-reps and bank lobbyists who fill out the Obama roster adhere to the same pro-business credo as the members of Team Bush, that is, that all public assets and resources should be strip-mined from their rightful owners and transferred to the robber barons at the top of the economic food-chain. There's no way that Geithner, Summers and the rest of the Wall Street insiders would ever dream of rebuilding the public safety net they've been trying to destroy for the last decade or more. That's not in their interests at all. The administration's announce

"Keep The Spirit Of '45 Alive" Brings Youth And Seniors Together
ericgyoung
by ericgyoung  11-15-2009
History.com in conjunction with a number of partners (most of which I've clipped below) have begun their 3rd annual "Keep the Spirit of '45 Alive" initiative. This initiative has a novel approach to history - its goal is to bring the "latest generation" together with the "greatest generation" to recall their stories of August 14, 1945, the day World War II ended. Young people are enlisted in this initiative to assist seniors with telling their stories using electronic media, a remarkable concept and one that is so important to preserving the oral histories of our seniors. Although we are beyond Veterans' Day for 2009, the initiative is far from over. It runs until August 14, 2010 - the 65th anniversary of the end of the World War II and the day when rebuilding the modern world began. I came across the Spirit of '45 website completely by accident today, but I am definitely going to find out much more about it and see how one gets involved. If you are interested in World War I

U.N. to consider Israeli War Crimes Report
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-8-2009
This clip is background to this U.N. decision, announce hours ago. There is also mentioned Hamas did a war crime, alleged to aim rockets in civilian areas. Over a thousand Palestinian civilians were killed in the last Gaza Strip invasion; 3 Israeli civilians killed. Note: the U.S. kills dozens of civilians every week. They just say: "We didn't mean it." The real issues are policies of genocide in the deliberate destruction of Palestinian water supplies and infrastructure, sewage plants, electrical supplis, destruction of industries and farmland, livestock, prohibition on fishing, travel, emprisoned in the Strip, blockade of needed goods including supplies for rebuilding, etc. -- policies designed to totally destroy and/or remove a population based on race.

A Living History of the Human Spirit Coping With Disaster

and archived at the US Library of Congress. In the coming months and years we will continue working to ensure that as much of the physical re-building is captured before this history is lost forever, and to tell as fully as possible our subjects’ stories " so that audiences will better understand and appreciate how people cope with the trauma of disasters. More than six years after the attacks, activity at the WTC site is increasing day by day as construction of the Freedom Tower and its sister buildings move into full swing " and our work over this time at the site has made us aware of how easy it is to miss critical events. We need your financial support to keep our cameras rolling and to expand the filming of the rebuilding of Ground Zero.  Warning - you may not want to read this since it is about racial bias and elitism's effects in America. Four years ago Katrina laid bare the depth of racism and elitism in not just New Orleans, Louisiana but in the USA. Reminds me of why we tolerate genocide in the Sudan, high crime and homicide rates in predominately Black-American neighborhoods, and very high infante mortality in the Black and or poor America.

President Obama's Aggressive Investigation of the CIA

by merrie  8-29-2009    2
"The United States' intelligence community is undergoing the most extensive " perhaps even radical " transformations since the Office of Strategic Services gave way to the Central Intelligence Agency," said Det. Frances. CIA morale hits new low due to Obama Administration threats "Recognizing that people are the critical element in transformation initiatives is key to a successful transformation of the intelligence community and related homeland security organizations. However, an agency headed by a politically motivated party hack is a dangerous thing for the American people," political strategist Mike Baker said. The CIA is responsible for coordinating US counterintelligence activities abroad. Each of the military departments also has a counterintelligence element that operates domestically and overseas. "Historically, intelligence agencies have not performed this crucial function very well.

Hezbollah Readies for War as UN Can Only Observe
merrie
by merrie  8-26-2009    3
Hezbollah, which has the backing of Iran and Syria, is rebuilding its force in the south, undaunted by its loss in Lebanon’s June elections, in which a pro-U.S. coalition won a parliamentary majority. The peacekeepers’ stay in south Lebanon expires on Aug. 31 and the UN Security Council must decide whether to extend it without change or authorize them to impose the weapons ban by force even without the support of the Lebanese army. Free of Hezbollah The 12,000 UN soldiers were sent to Lebanon after a 2006 war with Israel that began when Hezbollah, which the U.S. and Israel consider a terrorist organization, captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid. After the fighting ended, the Security Council passed a resolution prohibiting “weapons or authority in Lebanon other than that of the Lebanese state.” The peacekeepers were deployed to keep south Lebanon free of Hezbollah’s militia and arms, a role they have to perform with the cooperation of the Lebanese army.

Paris Evolving Under the Gaze of Notre Dame’s Gargoyles
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  7-23-2009    2
"Like other medieval gargoyles, those decorating Notre Dame were intended as drainage spouts, with internal passages that carry rainwater from the roof and out through the gargoyles’ mouths. The word gargoyle actually comes from the French gargouille, which originally meant “throat” or “gullet”, and Latin words like gurgulio, from the root gar, “to swallow”, representing the gurgling sound of water." "Of course the monstrous appearance of the gargoyles is no happy coincidence, and many believe they were designed to frighten away evil spirits. Da Vinci Code fanatics and conspiracy theorists will doubtless make some secret symbolic connection between these gargoyles and the minds of medieval masons, and of course such hybrid chimeras have made appearances in popular culture everywhere from The Hunchback of Notre Dame to Ghostbusters. Do they threaten damnation or worse to sinners? Judgment Day awaits in Paris."

I'm Confused......
Ilsadago1

Why is it only Israels closure of boarders that is an issue? Why does no one at the UN decry the Egyptian governments' closed boarders? Now, Egypt, an Arab country who should share the ideals of the Palestinians, isn't allowing much through to Gaza...why? Is it possible that they DON'T share a common bond? When will the UN demand an explanation from Egypt and try to force it, a sovereign government, to open boarders with a country it probably doesn't trust? If Egypt trusted the Palestinian government, they would have allowed any goods, services, supplies in via their boarders...but they don't. Food for thought, huh?

Rebuilding the Republican Party
ColoradoRight
by ColoradoRight  5-22-2009    4
And what about moderates? I know this won’t make me popular with the Republican base, but we have to make every effort we can to get as many moderates into the Republican Party as possible. Let’s bend on any issue necessary and soften our rhetoric to get every squish behind us. Let’s even invite Arlen Specter back; we can tell him we were wrong and trillions in wasteful spending is a great idea right now. We need all the moderates we can get to join us, because when everything goes to hell, they’ll be a great source of cheap labor and — in a worse case scenario — food. So for the future survival of the party, moderates are very important.

GOP and Gay Marrage. Times Change

Steve Schmidt, who was the senior strategist to Senator John McCain of Arizona during his presidential campaign, said in a speech and an interview that Republicans were in danger of losing these younger voters unless the party comes to appreciate how issues like gay marriage resonate, or do not resonate, with them. “Republicans should re-examine the extent to which we are being defined by positions on issues that I don’t believe are among our core values, and that put us at odds with what I expect will become, over time, if not a consensus view, then the view of a substantial majority of voters,” he said in a speech.
