Brain Tumor Survivors Shouldn't Take It Easy
JackieDel
by JackieDel  10-21-2009
The mice that were able to exercise scored just as well on a memory test as normal mice did; however, the mice that did not have access to the exercise wheel did not. "It was remarkable that the irradiated, running mice were just like the normal, non-irradiated mice that didn't exercise," lead researcher and graduate student Sarah Wong-Goodrich of the Duke Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, was quoted as saying. "We were expecting some memory retention issues with a longer delay and there weren't any." The researchers believe exercise benefits the mind by improving blood flow to the hippocampus in the brain, a key area for learning and memory.

Checking out the neighborhood. Who knows, maybe our grandkids will found a new civilization. Check out Kim Stanley Robinson's "Mars" series (Red Mars, Blue Mars, Green Mars) for a take on what is reasonably possible. It's a great read. Does both the tech and social side of what such an effort could look like.

A funny thing happened on the way to the cancer clinic...
Lexica
by Lexica  10-15-2009
More: Being able to laugh in the face of cancer lets you continue to own yourself, as hard as that might be, rather than ceding ownership to the disease. A good laugh reminds you that you are not your cancer.… I know that sometimes laughter seems impossible. After my cancer diagnosis I plunged into a bleak funk. And these days I’m struggling with a post-treatment depression that leaves my days swaddled in wearying grays. But no matter how remorseless the gloom, we humans tend to have our antennae for humor out. We’re the animal that wants to laugh, wants to unlock itself through a chuckle and a chortle. And laughter lets us cope, even in awkward moments.

Enter Dave Anderson, who manages a local restaurant and had gotten to know Dominic and his family, said the Sun. When he heard about the child's coping mechanism -- his mental transformation into the Dominator -- Anderson was floored. "Dominic is an awesome kid," he told the Sun, "who never got scared at what he had to go through. He really is the superhero in this story." To share that story, Anderson paid for the design and production of a Dominator comic book. He published 2,000 copies last month, of which half have already been sold. All proceeds will benefit children's cancer research.

The Democrat’s War on Oncologists and Cardiologists
merrie
by merrie  10-11-2009    2
cardiology and 19% on radiation oncology. They’re targets only because of cost: Two-thirds of morbidity or mortality among Medicare patients owes to cancer or heart disease. … Cancer doctors get hit because the Administration believes specialists order too many MRIs and CT scans. Certain kinds of diagnostic imaging lose 24% under new assumptions that machines are in use 90% of the time, up from 50%. There isn’t a radiologist in America running an MRI 10.8 hours out of 12, unless he’s lining up patients on a conveyor belt. But claiming scanners are used far more often than they really are lets the Administration “score” spending cuts. It’s like doling out healthcare by mimicking progressive income taxation; tax the haves into oblivion so eventually all can go without. And this change is applied to all expensive equipment, not just MRIs and CTs, so payments for antitumor radiation therapy will fall by up to 44%.

The REAL "Inconvenient Truth": Cell Phones and Bee Colony Collapse
blueridge
by blueridge  9-3-2009    4
Honey bees are in effect saying, "Can you hear us now?" The consequences of inaction on this are real and enormous. But unlike oil, coal or "carbon emissions", not even Al Gore or Obama will advocate giving up or curbing cell phones or towers, even though the hard facts on this are much more threatening to agriculture, and by consequence human life, the economy of foods, and the entire eco-system than the mythical "global warming" doomsday scenerio. Cell phones are America's and the world's unnecessary CONVENIENCE that apparently are not even being debated by the Climate people, willing to sacrifice the pollination of food crops by honey bees for cell chat. The buzz is real, but governments are not moving to regulate, and are likely too afraid of consumers who do not care about consequences any more than those who throw fast food trash out the window of their cars. There is also hard evidence of radiation from cell phones directly damaging human health.

"We are looking at that scenario but most of the missiles have been removed in the last few years from Pondera County." While unlikely to be from the military, samples taken this week will hopefully be able to pinpoint where the radiation came from and solve at least one mystery. Results of the radiation test should take a couple months.

Obama calls it WMD: Terror threat seen as 'most serious' since 9/11 attacks
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  9-25-2009    1
Obama admin. says explosives = WMD Iraq had massive amounts of explosives in 2003 Ergo Iraq had WMD The American people get this. The left’s obsession with the rights of terrorists finds no support among sensible citizens. But the issue’s been hijacked by the America-hating zealots who shaped our president’s worldview and by media scoundrels who would rather have their country die for them. I guess we can put the whole "Bush lied, blah blah blah" crap to bed now that Obama's Justice Department has declared high explosives to be weapons of mass destruction. Iraq was, and remains, awash in high explosives. Ipso facto. However when it is shown, absolutely, that Obama lies every time his lips move, liberals do not seem to notice. Some say the left has a double standard. I say they have no standards whatsoever. Probably the fault of the Jews for beaming high intensity radiation at liberal heads. /s

Three Mile Island: True Conspiracy Revealed.
mcsmithblack

This article will give you absolute chills. Randall Thompson and wife, Joy, both worked at TMI and investigated the meltdown. During the investigation, their lives were threatened and they left Pennsylvania for New Mexico. They were in process of writing a book on the meltdown and coverup with Joy's brother, Charles (a nuclear Navy vet). One night, while Randall and Charles were driving home, they were run off the road and Charles was killed. The book manuscript that was in the trunk of the car, went mysteriously missing. Oh, just read the article. It's genuinely creepy.
