THE JURY IS STILL OUT!
mountainpalm
by mountainpalm  12-29-2009
As for actual historic achievement, the jury is still out. Let's see what happens with health care, the climate bill and financial re-regulation first. Above all, the new Afghanistan policy needs to play out for at least a few months before we assess the new regime's biggest risk to date. At the same time, actual events in 2009 did resolve some of the political questions that beguiled us just one year ago. Let's take them in Letterman order. Continued at source: disc.yourwebapps.com

Selling a low-carbon life just got harder
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  12-21-2009
"Everything to play for". Well, people need a bit of coherence in order to understand. For example, the consequences of a "healthy" economic recovery will certainly be another sharp increase in CO2 emissions. What should we do? That would be the start of some coherent, non-hypocritical policy making. Start by asking real open questions, and do not think you know the answers in advance. Then use some natural intelligence to look for other pertinent questions before entering into an open inquiry.

Essential Questions On Health Reform Americans Should Be Asking Now
merrie
by merrie  12-9-2009
to start going bankrupt in 2017, it makes no fiscal sense to use the savings to pay for yet another new entitlement instead of shoring up the main program. These congressional prescriptions will only produce more deficit spending. If health reform does generate a surplus, will this money be used to pay down the debt " or fund new government spending? How will adding a new, government-run insurance program increase competition in private insurance markets? Investors.com Read full article at http://bit.ly/4KyM9X

Retired Nave SEAL questions Nation's Priorites
jatfla
by jatfla  12-5-2009    1
I don't believe the "Nation" questions this. I think that the anti-American Left and the anti-war, anti-Bush proponents have made this an issue. Who will fight or stand for American interests when they risk criminal prosecution? This doesn't even rise to the level of Abu Ghraib ...which in my opinion was not news-worthy, just dumb.

December 7, 1941: Day of Deceit--FDR and Pearl Harbor
blueridge
by blueridge  12-5-2009
FDR deliberately set up a plan to provoke Japan into attacking the US Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor (where they sat as ducks in this new forward position, resisted by Naval commanders for that very reason), in order to force reluctant Americans into war with Germany. Throughout 1941, FDR implemented the remaining seven provocations . He then gauged Japanese reaction through intercepted and decoded communications intelligence originated by Japan’s diplomatic and military leaders. The island nation’s militarists used the provocations to seize control of Japan and organized their military forces for war against the U.S., Great Britain, and the Netherlands. The centerpiece – the Pearl Harbor attack – was leaked to the U.S. in January 1941. During the next 11 months, the White House followed the Japanese war plans through the intercepted and decoded diplomatic and military communications intelligence.

Some Tough Questions About Islam and Jihadists
merrie
by merrie  12-1-2009    1
Our enemy uses Islam as a mask and he needs us to help him drive nonpoliticized Muslims into his camp. It is the essential element of his strategy. He cannot succeed without accomplishing this feat—and he cannot accomplish this goal without our help. Consider the Machiavellian tactics of tyrants throughout human history. Repeatedly they conjure a “common (external) enemy” and an existential vision, binding the masses to them. Read, for example, Eric Hoffer’s “The True Believer, Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements.” Our enemy is trying to create and sustain a mass movement. If he fails in this regard, he fails completely. Patrick A. Toffler Col. (Ret.) U.S. Army Hewitt, N.J. Mr. Gerecht astutely points out that President Barack Obama has missed a critical opportunity to militate against holy warriors in our midst. But he fails to connect the dots on a larger trend: American reluctance to admit that we are at war.

Palin's Interview on Hannity
jatfla
by jatfla  11-19-2009
I was glad to watch this on-line. For the first time I got to hear her speak plainly and clearly what she actually believes about her life, the campaign, her political views, and what she thinks is important for America. Usually it's only been clips, questions requiring one sentence answers. This was a good interview. I came away liking her more.

The Four Horsemen: Harris, Dennet, Dawkins and Hitchens :)
Antara
by Antara  12-15-2007    5
All four authors have recently received a large amount of media attention for their writings against religion - some positive, and some negative. In this conversation the group trades stories of the public's reaction to their recent books, their unexpected successes, criticisms and common misrepresentations. They discuss the tough questions about religion that face to world today, and propose new strategies for going forward. http://richarddawkins.net/article,2025,THE-FOUR-HORSEMEN,Discussions-With-Richard-Dawkins-Episode-1-RDFRS
