POPSElaborate puppetry brings "War Horse" to life

More: Since opening at the National in 2007 and transferring to the West End this spring, “War Horse” has reduced many London audience members to tears, especially in the final minutes, as they learn the fates of Albert, Joey and Topthorn and whether Albert and Joey will find each other amid the chaos of war. That two puppets elicit this sort of response has inspired the designers to develop a theory they call micromovement. “We work on the assumption that the audience is in fact far more perceptive than they are normally given credit for,” Mr. Jones said. “Meaning, if the puppet is breathing, even people sitting in the very back row can see it. So even the tiniest movement is important, and those onstage need to be aware of it. It’s this focus on the importance of detail in the horse movement that, strangely, has quite epic emotional resonance.”

If he gets elected he will only be a figurehead, a puppet through which his advisers will run the country. Sound familiar? This is the way the country is currently being run. Bush is just a puppet of the true republican powers. Bush and McCain are exactly the same.

POPSChocolate A short comedy sketch we did for local TV. A take-off of one of my favorite Smothers Brothers routines. Translation: Junior: Hey Max. Max: Hey Junior Junior: Is it my imagination, or do I smell chocolate. Max: It's not your imagination, it is really chocolate. I fell into a bucket of chocolate this morning. Junior: You fell into a bucket of chocolate? Max: Yes, an enormous bucket, full of chocolate. It was terrible. Junior: I can imagine. And what did you do? Max: I yelled "FIRE!" Junior: Hang on...you fell into a bucket of chocolate and yelled "fire"? Max: That's right. Junior: And why did you do that? Max: Because nobody would have helped me if I had yelled "CHOCOLATE"! (rim shot)

POPSKara Walker Art Exhibit "My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor" I had the good fortune to see Kara Walker's exhibit at the Hammer Museum hear in Los Angeles. I'm not an artist, nor do I have an educational background in art, but I have to say I was beyond impressed with her work. Her pieces are undoubtedly controversial, especially in an era where I've actually heard people say out loud "There is no racism" and "forget slavery...it was so long ago!" Her artwork, a mix of murals, sketches, wall projections, puppetry, and video made me think deeply about the existence -both past and present- of oppression in the forms of racism and patriarchy. I proudly hale Kara Walker as one bad ass Invincible Sista.
