POPS The Truth May Be … Out There Anyway, I don’t know if there was a publicity-grabbing hoax plotted, or if an opportunity was seized on the fly, or if it all innocently happened the way Balloon Dad says it did. But whatever happened yesterday, I have a sneaking suspicion the flying Jiffy Pop balloon was not originally conceived, built and being tested as an innovative commuting vehicle. It’s not for nothing Shepard Smith and everyone else was comparing that thing to a UFO yesterday. Maybe, like the Richard Dreyfuss character in ”Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” Richard Heene was just strangely compelled to make his experimental 3DLAV commuting device look like a traditional Roswell-inspired flying saucer hoax.

More: Earlier this week, I was talking to a friend about l'affair Polanski, and she brought up a really good point: Remember the "Hounddog" controversy? (No? Then you might remember the "Dakota Fanning Rape Movie" controversy.) In that case, a female writer-director, Deborah Kampmeier, was excoriated for depicting a fictional child rape -- via close-ups on a clothed Fanning's face and hands, not simulated intercourse -- to tell a story about, among other things, the way victims are silenced. Outrage over the use of a 12-year-old actress in a rape scene, spearheaded by conservative groups like Concerned Women for America, brought the independent film national attention -- and yes, Virginia (and Carol), there is such a thing as bad publicity. Theater chains backed out of showing the movie. Protesters called the district attorney's office in Wilmington, N.C., where the movie was shot, demanding that Kampmeier be prosecuted for child pornography. The filmmaker received death threats.

Paul, a criminally insane killer who walked away from a mental hospital field trip to the Spokane fair last week, was caught a shortly before 4 p.m. today in the Goldendale, Wash., area. Paul, 47, who was found insane in the brutal murder of a Sunnyside activist in 1987, had been undergoing treatment at Eastern State Hospital. He disappeared on Thursday from an Eastern-sponsored outing for mental patients to the Spokane Interstate Fair, triggering a manhunt that has attracted national publicity. Sgt. Dave Reagan, spokesman for the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that Paul was recaptured near Goldendale, the county seat of Klickitat County along the Columbia River Gorge in south central Washington. Searchers were led to Goldendale on a tip, but Reagan declined to specify the source of the tip. Details of the capture were not yet released. Goldendale is across Satus Pass from Paul’s former hometown of Sunnyside, which is about 60 miles away in . . .
