POPSWhat Obama Might Look Like If He Read Polls And Michael Barone's Column
He had already realized that his sentiments were leading him away from the Whigs and toward the new Republican party, and in 1856 he became a Republican. He quickly came to the fore in the party as a moderate opponent of slavery who could win both the abolitionists and the conservative free-staters, and at the Republican national convention of 1856 he was prominent as a possible vice presidential candidate. Two years later he was nominated by the Republican party to oppose Douglas in the Illinois senatorial race. Accepting the nomination (in a speech delivered at Springfield on June 16), Lincoln gave a ringing declaration in support of the Union: "A house divided against itself cannot stand." The campaign that followed was impressive. Lincoln challenged Douglas to a series of debates (seven were held), in which he delivered masterful addresses for the Union and for the democratic idea. He was not an abolitionist, but he regarded slavery as an injustice and an evil .....

POPSGoogle Unleashes Its Own Public DNS Be very afraid. Just kidding. Well, half kidding. It could very well be the standard from the get-go, due to Google brand name backing and the easy to remember 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 addresses. Do you want Google to know every single web site and page you have visited? Some people may not care, but some people concerned with privacy may disagree. If you're already a huge Google fan and first-mover, then you probably don't really care that they can read your email, office documents, calendar, voice mail, health records, and have a picture of your house.

POPSCourt Rules Against Property Owners in Brooklyn for New Sports Complex Caught under the wheels are average citizens whose only recourse is to try to defend their property rights in court. So much for that. In allowing the property seizure, the Court of Appeals dodged some of the central challenges to the condemnation, including whether the Empire State Development Corporation's designation of blight in the Atlantic Yards area was applied after the stadium project had already been planned, making it a "pretext." Nor did the court take on the question—at the heart of eminent domain law since Kelo—whether economic development may be considered a public use under the New York Constitution. Instead, the majority argued that because the state had designated the area as blighted, the takings were therefore a "public use," and it was not the place of the court to interfere. Nevermind that the determination of blight was based largely on a study funded by . . . the aspiring developer.

POPSBig Brother Monitoring Your Clipmarks, Blogs, Tweets "Visible", a very extensive and sophisticated CIA-based monitoring program is in effect watching online forums, blogs, twitters, and likely Clipmarks (where influential clips are easily tabulated). After all, it's all in the public domain, where whatever you post you must own. In-Q-Tel says it wants Visible to keep track of foreign social media, and give spooks “early-warning detection on how issues are playing internationally ,” spokesperson Donald Tighe tells Danger Room.

She is an associate editor. Whoever is in accounting or advertising should have been held accountable."

POPSProposed Power Corridor Raises Eminent Domain Concerns in Six States
In addition to concerns expressed by farmers, local businesses relying on eco-tourism are opposed to the lines, which they fear would permanently blight places of significance like Harriet Tubman's birthplace and the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Landowners, environmentalists and businesses that oppose the power line are urging representatives to consider alternatives, such as wind power or burying the lines. If the project is rejected at the State level, PHI could invoke federal eminent domain powers, under the Energy Policy Act of 2005: In the event that the Mid-Atlantic Power Pathway is not approved by the Maryland Public Service Commission, PHI would be able use the power of eminent domain under Federal authority. Section 1221 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 provides authority for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to review and override state siting decisions as well as other federal and state laws and policy and . . . .

POPSA Terrible Thing to Waste There’s also a larger point here, one that speaks to our era of contention over copyrights and wrongs. Once a word, phrase or sound bite wins widespread usage, it escapes the promulgator’s possession and enters the wide world of the public domain. As Romer says, “You can’t own a sound bite.”

POPSObama's Revealing Body Language (updated and expanded)) As some AT commentators point out, this picture becomes a metaphor for ObamaCare. The elderly are left in the back, with only the kindness of the Crowleys of the world, the stand up guys, to depend on. The government has other priorities. One of the major subtexts of the health care debate involves the public's fear of indifferent, powerful bureaucrats ruling their lives. It is one thing to wait in line at the DMV to find out which other line you should wait in, in order to begin the process of waiting for multiple bureaucrats to go through the motions of processing your request. I have spent entire afternoons going through this process. But when we get to health care, waiting often means enduring pain and dysfunction longer than necessary, sometimes a worsening of the condition, and sometimes death. That's why I think this image will have genuine resonance. It captures something that older Americans in particular can relate to.
