An executive order was issued by the president, on the 17th of July, and it said, basically, that if you protest or threaten what he calls “stabilization efforts in Iraq,” your property can be seized and you can be detained. Hmm... long live King George!!

Male menopause? Yes, it’s real
Aribeth
by Aribeth  4-26-2008    4
Andropause is a medical condition, diagnosed with a blood test by a physician that reveals testosterone levels below a certain level. If a diagnosis of andropause is warranted, treatment with testosterone replacement may be an option, depending on a man’s health history. However, the biggest, and most misunderstood, symptom of declining testosterone is a decrease in libido. Testosterone is truly the hormone that stokes the flames of desire. Many men confuse andropause with erectile dysfunction (ED), because they often occur around the same time. These men often turn to an ED medication, such as Viagra, to improve their erectile ability, which works for a time in most cases. However, as men get older, the gap between desire and arousal widens and many men become deeply disappointed when Viagra doesn't give them the desire to have sex. That's because Viagra doesn't boost testosterone levels.<<

Paralysed man takes a walk in virtual world
Mohir
by Mohir  6-2-2008    5
It is the first time a paralysis patient has succeeded in meeting a person and having a conversation in an Internet virtual world, they added. Researchers are now studying a system that would let patients create text messages by mentally selecting certain letters, said Junichi Ushiba, associate professor at the biosciences and informatics department of Keio Universty's Faculty of Science and Technology. "In the near future, they would be able to stroll through Second Life shopping malls with their brain waves... and click to make a purchase," Ushiba said.

Standing Up to Conservative Bullying
gingembre
by gingembre  6-25-2007    3
Here's a bit more to explain the brinkmanship and absolutism: "Brinkmanship is being used to force the federal government to write a blank cheque for the pipeline, and indemnify Exxon against ecological disasters and further cost increases..." "Absolutism (Bush-style "you're either with us or you're with the terrorists" framing) is being used to bully Canada into committing to keep our troops in the midst of the anarchy and civil war in Afghanistan. The PR from the military is increasingly using the term 'enemy' to describe anyone in Afghanistan who opposes the continued presence of foreign troops in their country. The ideologically rabid Harper Conservative minority government routinely uses the "if you don't support our war, you don't support our troops" line to disparage anti-war groups. And today a military spokesman lambasted the Canadian media for daring to publicize opinion polls showing Canadians' strong opposition to the war, saying it was "demoralizing our troops".

More rights for Pakistani women
Deepti
by Deepti  12-26-2006    1
Women's rights in Pakistan will not be realised until particular Islamic laws and codes are scrapped. This include laws allowing the marriage of girls under sixteen, making a women's testimony equal to half of a man's, excluding female testimony in Hudood cases, and allowing family members to kill women in the name of honour without any fear of criminal penalty. Pakistan may look from outside very progressive in terms of women's rights, especially when one remembers Benazir Bhutto, something not even the United States has managed to accomplish. It is true that women are guaranteed one-third of the seats in national and local-level assemblies and are represented in the cabinet. It is also true that their participation in the labour force is remarkably large with many women holding university degrees and occupying high posts in both public and private institutions, including the army. But this only applies to urban centres, where literacy rates are high and the economy is booming.

Communist Party Backs Obama For Prez
merrie
by merrie  8-7-2008    3
The struggle to defeat the ultra-right and turn our country on a positive path will not end with Obama’s election. But that step will shift the ground for successful struggles going forward. One thing is clear. None of the people’s struggles — from peace to universal health care to an economy that puts Main Street before Wall Street — will advance if McCain wins in November. Let’s keep our eyes on the prize. That’s right. The Communist Party Of The United States wants to elect Barack Hussein Obama as our President. Why do you think that is? And why has their endorsement been so studiously ignored by our watchdog media? Still, won’t it be pleasant finally to have a President that the same hard-line Communists who supported Joseph Stalin can support? This is the kind of “unity” Mr. Obama will bring us. h/t sweetness & light http://sweetness-light.com/

Does Smart Equal Liberal?
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  1-20-2008
Instead, it appears to be something about the intelligent brain itself: Smart people may have a different emotional makeup, a personality that is more open to experience. Or it may be that high IQ at age ten eventually leads to more complex moral reasoning: In short, smart people alone may have the cognitive machinery that’s needed for more flexible analysis of political and moral quandaries.

Silent Racism and White Privilege
dulios
by dulios  3-25-2008    11
"Her book contends that “silent racism” fosters routine actions not recognized by an individual as racist, but upholds the status quo. Trepagnier says that some whites become detached from the race issue while others are so concerned with it that they become apprehensive about it, avoiding even the mention of the topic. In both cases, this passive stance silently provides the racist actions of others an endorsement, or worse, encouragement. Trepagnier claims that even individuals who feel enlightened in race relations often miss the point. In one of her studies, 25 white women who considered themselves progressive voiced their opinions to Trepagnier in eight group sessions from Santa Barbara, California. In the discussions, the women who were most race-aware said that they could identify racist actions they had performed as recently as a week ago. Among the least race-aware was a woman who responded, “Racism has nothing to do with me."

The Next Crisis: PAKISTAN - Musharraf is losing his grip...
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  6-1-2007    11
Although I can appreciate what he is trying to do... simultaneously keep both the US and Al Qaeda from bombing his country, I think Musharraf is loosing his grip. A lot of these scenes seem very familiar. I watched them happen in Nepal as King Gyanendra struggled, and ultimately failed, to keep control of Nepal. Musharraf's government feels very close to a dangerous tipping point. This should be a big concern for everybody, because the results will leave no one unaffected. Making sure Pakistan remains stable and progressive should be a first-class diplomatic priority for all of the world.
