Finishing fourth in the men's category was another American, Ryan Hall. Hall, 27, is a rising star on the world running circuit and made headlines last year by running the London marathon in a stunning 2:06:17. Americans once dominated long-distance running, bringing home consecutive gold medals from 1970-82. Marathon legend Bill Rodgers won the New York City four years in a row from 1976 to 1979, and Alberto Salazar took walked away with successive victories from 1980-82. The marathon, which began in 1970 with a mere 127 runners, now hosts 38,000 athletes from around the globe, according to the marathon's Web site. Known for its diverse, punishing terrain, the annual event spans all five of New York's City's boroughs, finishing in the heart of Central Park. Keflezighi and Tulu will each receive $130,000 in prize money.

How many of you think that the word “election” or “democracy” or “vote” or “ballot” occurs anywhere in the 200 pages of that treaty? Quite right, it doesn’t appear once. So, at last, the communists who piled out of the Berlin Wall and into the environmental movement, who took over Greenpeace so that my friends who funded it left within a year, because captured it – Now the apotheosis as at hand. They are about to impose a communist world government on the world. You have a president who has very strong sympathies with that point of view. He’s going to sign it. He’ll sign anything. He’s a Nobel Peace Prize ; of course he’ll sign it. More at source, well worth reading as it affects us all.

Oh noez. Corporate America, Bill Gates, is dropping 120 million to help Africa and India. So liberals, this must horrify you right? Because corporations are "evil" in your nightmares or did you confuse it with an episode of "Fringe". Moan for me libs. Moan about America and whine because Americans, Bill and Melinda Gates, just blew your mind. Where's that fatty Michael Moore-on anyway? Probably sitting in Krispy Kreme or Dominoes Pizza stuffing his fat face. I know this news isn't as important as the Christians eating fried chicken at the Baptist Church, but who could compete with a horror show like that. Waaaaahhhhhh corporations......waaaaahhhhhh Christians........wahhhhhhh Rush Limbaugh.......waaaaaahhhhhhhhhh. Boohoo. Cry me a river.

About the Coke thing, the professor of obstetrics and gynecology does not recommend using Coke for birth control or to cure babies of colic, toughen your pooches paw pads, dissolve the rust off your car’s bumper or quench your thirst. Countdown: Senators Opposed to "Socialized" Health Insurance Voted for "Socialized" Property Insuran
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-3-2009    3
But each of them voted just last year in support of government-run insurance, that insurance however protects property. It is the National Flood Insurance Program created in 1968, because the free market decided it could not make money on that unpredictable risk called flooding. Government-run flood insurance is sold through private insurance companies but it is backed by the government and the government assumes all risk. Unlike the public option which relies on customer premiums, government flood insurance gets a subsidy—also known as a handout—from the government and it is mandatory for some people. So given all the shouting over a public option, who could vote for mandatory taxpayer subsidized, anti- free market socialized flood insurance run by government bureaucrats? Every single politician I just named and most of Congress. Charles Boustany of Louisiana, along with 44 other Republicans, including going bipartisan on September 27th, 2007 to vote yea on the Flood Insurance Refo

In short, the Obama platform would mandate extremely full, expensive, and highly subsidized coverage -- including a lot of benefits people would never pay for with their own money -- but deliver it through a highly restrictive, HMO-style plan that will determine what care and tests you can and can't have. It's a revolution, all right, but in the wrong direction.

219-212 HOUSE PASSES 'GLOBAL WARMING' LEGISLATION... 'BILL OF THE CENTURY' VOTED ON UNREAD... Boehner Tried 'Filibuster'... 300 PAGE DUMP AT 3AM-- REPUBLICANS CRY FOUL... One of the biggest compromises involved the near total elimination of an administration plan to sell pollution permits and raise more than $600 billion over a decade " money to finance continuation of a middle class tax cut. About 85 percent of the permits are to be given away rather than sold in a ceoncession to energy companies and their allies in the House " and even that is uncertain to survive in the Senate. The final bill also contained concessions to satisfy farm-state lawmakers, ethanol producers, hydroelectric advocates, the nuclear industry and others, some of them so late that they were not made public until 3 a.m. on Friday. Supporters and opponents agreed the result would be higher energy costs but disagreed vigorously on the impact on consumers.

American Taxpayers To Guarantee Downside Risk On Geithner's Plan
merrie
by merrie  3-25-2009
Others to criticise the plan include former Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Arthur Levitt, and Bill Gross, of bond manager PIMCO, who has said he does not believe the plan will be enough to solve the banking crisis. It is understood that the PPIP was only finalised after Treasury officials, led by Mr Geithner, spoke to a number of senior bankers on Wall Street, including JP Morgan Chase chairman Jamie Dimon, in the hope of getting a plan that was workable for the market, following the dismissal of Mr Geithner's earlier attempt to solve the financial crisis. As a result, a number of major banks and bond houses are understood to have already agreed to sign up to the programme, with PIMCO and BlackRock among two investors to have raised their hands. Others remain less convinced.

Is A Trillion-Dollar Tax Increase A "Spending Cut Or Saving"?
merrie
by merrie  3-7-2009    2
Instead, the figure represents Obama's total efforts at deficit reduction, including tax hikes (of more than $1 trillion) on families making over $250,000 a year. It also includes hundreds of billions of dollars 'saved' by not continuing to spend $170 billion a year in Iraq." Only a big-government man would think of calling a trillion-dollar tax increase a spending cut or "saving." And from the perspective of the federal government, a trillion dollars taxed is a trillion dollars saved from the greed of the taxpayers who produced the wealth and might well want to spend or invest it in nongovernmental activities. Obama's secretary of energy, Steven Chu, said last year that the price of electricity in America is "anomalously low." You see how much smarter that Nobel Prize winner is than you? You probably thought you already were spending enough on electricity and fuel.

Controversy Over Selling Girl Scout Cookies
spirithiker
by spirithiker  2-10-2009    4
I love Girl Scout cookies. But isn’t the idea behind selling these tasty little treats to raise money for the Girl Scout of America while at the same time teaching the girls how to get involved in the business of raising money? Everyone can agree that selling door to door can be a risky proposition for safety reasons. But should parents be selling for them? I’m torn on this issue. On the one hand the girls are learning responsibility. On the other hand they are being taught how to scam others into doing their work for them. After all, the Girl Scouts of America has gotten these girls to do the selling for them for years. Are we doing these girls a disservice by selling the cookies for them? And, should an employee of one company be allowed to sell another companies products on their time? What’s your opinion?

In this study, people who were asked to privately think about their own personal past transgressions (e.g., cheating on their partners, stealing money, mistreating their parents) tended to choose personal hygiene gifts for their participation in the study. That is to say, unlike those in the control group who thought about more innocent things, those who had just reflected on their moral shortcomings were significantly more likely to choose antiseptic wipes as a going-away prize versus an object of equal value, as though they were literally motivated to wipe away their sins.

AS if this "Associate Professor" (I am bowled over) does not have to namedrop a school from the city where I first went to school, CHICAGO, he drops "the University that today has added yet another Nobel Prize winner in the sciences for the US" anyway. Three million dollars? If the benefit to the "children" is so great, let the parents of Chicago, the parents of Illinois or, BEST YET, the people who attend such science events, AS I OFTEN DID AT THE AMAZING CHICAGO MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & INDUSTRY pay for it. My parents took me to that museum, with the submarine and the NYC apartment sized washing machine. I think we paid, like, an ADMISSION AT THE DOOR. Last year I could not come CLOSE to paying for the Health care I was prescribed. I could not come close to affording my medication. Frankly, I could not care less about a parent actually having to pay a dollar a child to get into the museum where people suffering FAR WORSE than I am could use that money simply to LIVE AND BREATHE. What's great about the new, frictionless online giving we're testing here is that, if you've got a good cause, you no longer need to spend a fortune on real-world marketing.   "As they ridiculed me, they took delight most in mocking letters I had received from readers in England. I had now been without food and water and the toilet for 12 hours, and having been made to stand, my legs buckled. I vomited and passed out. All I remember is one of them gouging, scraping and clawing with his nails at the tender flesh beneath my eyes. He scooped my head and dug his fingers in near the auditory nerves between my head and eardrum . The pain became sharper as he dug in two fingers at a time. Another man had his combat boot on my neck, pressing into the hard floor. I lay there for over an hour. The room became a menagerie of pain, sound and terror."
